The Middle Ages is a time period that took place between 500’s and 1400’s In Western Europe. This was a time of feudalism, sickness, death, poverty, war, and faith. In this time people had a government called feudalism which was a political, economic, and social system in which nobles were granted the use of land that legally belonged to the king as payment for their military, their loyalty and protection. There was also a manor which had a manor house, a church, a village, and farm land. In medieval times people went through hard time and many were unsafe there were many deaths and diseases which at the time a disease basically meant death. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the great was a ruler in times of turmoil in Europe during the middle ages. Charlemagne came from a powerful family tree which made a huge impact on why he rose to power. His family history and their backgrounds is what prepared him to take on the task of becoming King of the Frankish Empire and protecting it from intruders. Charlemagne accomplished much during his reign. He focused on bringing education back into medieval Europe but, also discovered a more efficient way to govern his people. His conquests against the adversaries of the Holy Roman Empire is what lead to his expansion and spreading his Empire across most of Europe which he eventually established the Carolingian Empire in the later years of his supremacy. This also led to strong relationships with the Catholic Church and the State. Charlemagne’s goal was to spread Christianity throughout all of Europe and was willing to fight for his religion. One group in particular he fought with the most was the Saxons who he nearly eliminated their whole population.

Throughout the time period from 800 to 1500 there were several dynamic shifts in power between the Church and the nobility of western Europe. These changes would decide if Europe would be controlled by kings and lords, or ruled by the pope. During periods of prosperity in Europe power rested in the hands of the nobility, while during fragile periods of Western Europe, the church exercised more authority, as a result rule by king was better for Europe. One example of how a European king exercised authority over Europe during a peaceful time of the middle ages was during the reign of Charlemagne.

The Middle Ages occurred between the fall of Roman Empire and the fall of Constantinople (400-1500 C.E). Historians establish numerous attributes to give reasoning why the Middle Ages is believed to deserve multiple labels. This was a time of darkness that correlates with chaos, unorganization and violence. However, this was also a time when the adaptation of feudalism developed and prospered, and faith within the Catholic Church and other religions bloomed and expanded. The Middle Ages in Europe can be viewed as a Dark Age, an Age of Feudalism, and an Age of Faith.

The middle ages era is best labeled under “The Dark Ages” and “The Age of Feudalism”. In this time I believe that those labels work the best and are considered the most abundant that happened between 500 and 1400 in Europe. With all that happened then there is also a hand full of information to provide you with. “The dark ages” happened and scared the world. “The age of feudalism” changed our world later on giving us information to well control the world and not let it go into complete anarchy.

Charlemagne was determined to strengthen his empire and bring order to Europe. In 772 he launched a 30-year military campaign to accomplish his goal. He became the master of Europe and expanded his empire. As soon as in power Charlemagne wanted to unite all of the Germanic people into one kingdom and convert his subjects to Christianity. He accomplished France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He also included half of present day, Germany, and parts of Australia, and Spain. The Middle Ages were a period in Europe dating from the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, around the 5th century. However, the fixing of dates for the beginning and end of the Middle Ages is arbitrary. According to the Norton Anthology, "Medieval social theory held that society was made up of three 'estates': the nobility, composed of a small hereditary aristocracy,...,the church, whose duty was to look after the spiritual welfare of that body, and everyone else..."( Norton 76).

During the Dark Ages we learned the population dropped dramatically in numbers. Also during this time they were non-literate. They had to learn how to write once again but this time instead of using Linear B script used by the Mycenaeans they used the alphabet use by the Phoenicians. The Middle Ages began with the fall of Rome and lasted till 1450 C.E. This era started as a very difficult and dangerous time for most people who struggled to barely survive. They faced difficulties such as hunger and attacks from vicious barbarians. One system that helped too face these problems was Feudalism, the economic and political system that was developed and used in Medieval Europe. This system worked with a hierarchy; Monarchs were at the top and going down nobles, knights, and peasants. Everyone in this system protected each other. Knights were expected to protect the kingdom. Nobles and monarchs were required to provide protection for each other. Another part of Europe that helped people to face life difficulties was the Roman Catholic Church. The church helped make big developments during the middle ages specifically in education. Monks would immerse their lives in learning about the world and the universe. These were the only people in Western Europe developing their knowledge of their world during the middle ages, which was a big improvement from there being no learning. Feudalism and the Roman Catholic Church did provide more stability and security for the people of Western Europe during the Middle Ages. The Feudal System provided more stability in everyday life compared to the time during barbarian attacks, feudalism also provided security through the hierarchy, and the Roman Catholic Church created stability and security through education.

The Middle Ages began as a result from the collapse of the Roman Empire which began in 31 BCE, and fell in 476 C.E. In around 300 C.E. the emperor of the Rome divided the land for easier control. This began the decline of Rome. The Western half of Rome fell to Barbarian invaders, while the eastern half lived on as the Byzantine Empire. The Early Middle Ages began shortly after the western half fell. After the Roman Empire lost its position as the center of power, Western Europe fell into a time of chaos and warfare. There were a lot of attacks by Vikings, Magyars (hungarian nomads), and Muslims. The invasions caused disorder, and suffering, and the government system developed into feudalism.The High Middle Ages followed, the Early Middle Ages, and was the time period in Western Europe from around the 11th century to the 13th. The Middle Ages are referred to as the “Dark Ages” because of the disorder, hopelessness of the time. It is accurate to refer to the Middle Ages (500-1500) as a whole as a” the Dark Ages”.The Early Middle Ages meet the qualities of a dark age due to the, lack of government, education, and dysfunctional economy. However, the high middle ages was a time of improvement for these issues.
