Are you a witch? You just might be, all it takes is an accusation and the ignorant to follow. The Crucible is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. The play is set in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. This piece of literature draws many different historical ties regarding its actions within the play. Certain event during the creation of this play influenced how the play was written and even what it was written about. Most, if not all the play, The Crucible is centered around the Salem witch trials. The popular opinion of the causation of events was witchcraft. The accusations begin to fluster the village, and all are left in a state of confusion and rage. After a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft. As a wave of hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts, a special court convened in Salem to hear the cases. A lot of which is depicted throughout the story of The Crucible. It is the sole factor of which Miller bases the entire play off. Although the story is not one for one to the original historical actions of The Salem Witch Trials, the play accurately portrays what happened during this time. Some of the specific details of the play were changed to make the story more appealing and presentable for the reader. The Characters where for the most part all real, with spins of their original self in The Salem witch trials.
