The Color Purple is a novel written by Alice Walker. The novel is written in letter format. The main character, Celie, writes to God about her life. The story starts out with 14 year old Celie being raped by her Pa. Her Pa got her pregnant two times. Once her babies were born, Pa took them away. Celie let Pa rape and abuse her to protect her sister Nettie, who was a couple years younger than her. Celie and Nettie were very close and told each other everything. One day, Nettie started dating Mr. __. Mr. __ wanted to marry Nettie but Pa wouldn't let him, leaving his next best option, Celie. Pa married off Celie to Mr. __. Since Mr.__ had a crush on Nettie, he started to flirt and hit on her. Ignoring him, sent Mr.__ into an outrage. He decided to kick Nettie out of his house which left Celie distraught. Nettie promised to write to Celie, but Celie never heard from her. Because Nettie left, Celie’s life turned upside down. But, after awhile, she finally found happiness again when Mr.__ brought Shug Avery home. Shug was Mr.__’s mistress and had fallen sick. Expecting Celie to fix Shug, Mr.__ treats Celie with a little bit more respect. Shug was a beautiful woman with an incredible talent of singing. Celie falls in love with Shug and after some time, Shug falls in love with her too. Teaching Celie how to be happy again and showing her what a true friend and romance feels like, Shug became Celie’s everything. One day, Celie discovered a letter written from Nettie. Celie and Shug found out that Mr.__ had been hiding all of Nettie’s letters. Reading all of Nettie’s letters gave Celie a new purpose in life. Changing into a powerful, independent woman, Celie stuck up for herself and decided to leave Mr. __. She was over being the submissive wife, who let her husband walk all over
