The Causes Of Learning Disabilities

“According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, as of 2002, almost 2.9 million students receive special education services for learning disabilities in the United States” (Gale 1). Although many students receive help for their learning disabilities, a large number also are not aware they many have one. Learning disabilities can be difficult to understand. The causes are often subtle, however, research can help us better understand them as a whole.
By definition a learning disability is, “a condition giving rise to difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the level expected of those of the same age, especially when not associated with a physical handicap” (Google Definition). Learning disabilities often lead to struggle for students in school, and adults’ setbacks in work. They are very common in both children and adults, affecting mostly males. It is estimated that over 10 percent of people internationally are affected by a learning disability (Gale 1). 12 million American children suffer from one. That would be about three people in an average classroom. Over 60 percent of those suffering from learning disabilities are males (Lockley 1). More learning disabilities are more common in men, while eating and self-esteem disorders are more common in women.
