The Cask of Amontillado Edgar Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. His parents were David and Elizabeth Poe, his father left the family when he was young and his mother died from tuberculosis when he was only three. So he never really knew his parents. Separated from his brother William and sister Rosalie, Poe went to live with John and Frances Valentine Allan, a successful tobacco merchant, and his wife, in Richmond, Virginia. Poe went to the University of Virginia in 1826, where he excelled in his classes, but fell into a drinking and gambling problem gaining lots of debt, and after less than a year in school Poe dropped out. There is only one clue that shows why Montresor is so determined to get his revenge Fortunato "ventured upon insult." (Poe 579) Montresor comes from a proud and successful family so possibly Fortunato insulted his family or maybe just Montresor personally but regardless he would be avenged. One evening, during the carnival season, Montresor persuades the already drunk Fortunato to go to the vault of his house to check if he has really bought a rare Spanish wine, called “Amontillado.” Fortunato wants to show off his knowledge of fine wines and is also skeptical of the quality of the rare “Amontillado,” so he accepts the invitation and that’s when he seals his …show more content…

The irony starts simply with the title the word cask, or wine barrel, which comes from the same root word used to form casket. Therefore, the cask figuratively means Fortunato’s coffin. Also, Fortunato’s name suggests good fortune, however, Fortunato is anything but fortunate since he is going to his death. Because Fortunato and Montresor were at Carnival they both had costumes on. Fortunato in particular dresses as a court jester, his festive outfit contrasts with his fate that awaits him. Fortunato asks Montresor whether he is a mason, meaning a member of the Freemasonry. Montresor says he is indeed a mason. Montresor even brings out a trowel out of his clothes that he is wearing, “producing a trowel from beneath the folds of my roqueclaire.” (Poe 582) Meaning he is a craftsman that makes things from brick and
