Positive Use of Social Media There are hundreds of social media apps, that millions of people use everyday. For most people that's how they start off their day. Teens to adults use the new technology that one day will be a standard in our world. Social media has a positive impact on the youth today. Kids who use social media become more helpful and develop a sense of empathy. Kids who play multiplayer games develop an encouraging helping behavior. In the article “The Bad, the Ugly, and the Good of Children’s Use of Social Media”, Dr. Jim Taylor explains how a child who plays with others online instead of singularly if given the chance, would defend a stranger being troubled. In the CNN article “Kids and Social Networking” Georgiann Caruso describes how you can start to learn skills like this like “training wheels”. This is a way to try out the new things you learn without doing it face-to-face. Caruso states, “Online social networking can also help young people learn how to socialize with their peers; users also show more “virtual empathy”.” This quote shows that social media learn important life skills. You learn how to express your feelings and see how people react to it. Children learn things like how to relate to others with the use of social media. Although social media has varied benefits for the youth, some argue users tend to be egocentric. In the article “Kids and Social Networking”, Georgiann Caruso explains how most things you do tend to be based around yourself. They tend to put vain or egotistical comments that reflect all about himself. Caruso outlines, “In addition, many young Facebook users show more tendencies to be narcissistic.” This quote explains users tend to be self-obsessed online. However, social media ultimately teaches kids important skills like empathy. Therefore, the advantages of social media weigh out the disadvantages.
