The American Dream is a concept that the United States is built on. The United States promotes it as everyone having an equal opportunity to be successful in life. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the American dream is shown through Gatsby’s life. It makes his life better, but does not solve all of his problems. The American dream can be defined from this story, Gatsby represents the dream, and Fitzgerald makes a point in showing that living out the dream is not as great as it may seem. Fitzgerald had a different view of the American dream and he made this known through The Great Gatsby. He thought that readers should interpret the dream as whatever gives them happiness, even though the popular view of it is the pursuit of money and power. He wanted readers to be able to realize that the dream is accessible to anyone. This was shown in The Great Gatsby when Gatsby went from being a poor farmer’s child, to a rich and upper class man. Also, Daisy is a character in the book that chooses money over what her heart desired. She was left feeling unhappy about life, and Fitzgerald used her to show that money does not always lead to happiness. Overall, Fitzgerald does a good job of allowing the reader to be able to define the American dream from his story. One character, James Gatz, is a perfect representation of what the American dream is all about. Gatz was born into an unsuccessful farming
