The Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing went to the Institute of Medicine and analyzed a number of different data that pertained to the healthcare industry, governmental entities (both at the state and federal levels) and nurses, in particular, before determining a number of specific recommendations that would ultimately provide a positive effect if not a radical transformation for the healthcare industry in the United States.

Nurses have to change their current health care practice in order to meet the growth and also the goals of the IOM report.
Nursing practice is also one of the key messages addressed in the IOM report. The report suggests that “nurses should practice to full extent of their education and training”. Furthermore, “nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. This report has a great impact on nursing practice. The IOM report suggests that greater focus on managing the transition from nursing to practice. It recommends that regulatory reforms must be made to allow nurses to expand their scope of practice (IOM report, 2010).
In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched an initiative to assess and reform the nursing profession to address the complex unique nursing needs for the current world. The IOM report published in 2010 calls on nurses to take greater role in the healthcare system by taking leadership roles and obtaining high level education.
