Technology has revolutionized the human experience by changing the way one learns. Technology can best be defined as a tool that supports and promotes human learning. This can be seen through the usage of calculators, tablets (example: iPad), Smart Boards, video cameras, and, of course, the computer. These are all innovations that can have a profound impact on classroom learning. Subjects that might be monotonous for some – like math and science – can be much more engaging with virtual lessons, tutoring, and the streaming of educational videos (Khan, 2012, p. 17). This carries tremendous weight for me. As a student who struggled with Math, the best way that I learned was through computer games because it was fun and interesting to me. When students are given the opportunity to learn at their pace, stress levels are managed and scores are increasingly higher because the student is given the opportunity to grow their confidence and complete the task at hand without feeling any pressure. With the integration of technology, students get direct, individualized instruction from the computer. This form of supplemental teaching allows them to engage with the information at times that are most convenient for them and helps them become more self-directed in the learning process. It also gives the teacher more time to accomplish classroom objectives, while freeing them up to help the students who might be struggling with certain lessons. It is crucial that students are not just being educated in only one way. Each child is different; as a result, learning styles should be versatile and open to new strategies. For example, certain schools around the globe are moving on to implementing technology in classrooms because it provides many benefits and statistical research that states how students are improving their academic readiness because of the instant access to information, a greater engagement and interactive process in learning, and the personalization that instructors can do towards the educational experience that students receive. The benefits of technology in class can be rather debatable, for there are people who think it's a distraction, but it certainly seems to be beneficial according to the increase of passing percentages in schools.
Currently, there is a colossal debate regarding the use of technology in education. Some argue that using technology has a multitude of benefits, while others argue that technology use generates drawbacks or problems. I have read “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” by Marc Prensky, “The Learning Potential Of E-Books” written by Lotta Larson, and “Students’ perceptions of the usefulness of an E-book with annotative and sharing capabilities as a tool for learning: a case study” by Ee-Lon Lim and Khe Foon Hew, and I support the argument in which technology should be implemented into education because of its numerous benefits. The way that the education system is currently structured should change in order to allow technology to assist the teaching and learning process of today’s students.
Every student has a different way or learning, just as every teacher has a different way of teaching. Times have changed, our technology has become a more dominant aspect of our lives. From grades pre-kindergarten to the college level of learning you can be sure that each classroom will be using some sort of technology while being taught by a teacher. There are many ways we can use technology in the classrooms from powerpoints, video clips, and even simply taking an online class. As one expert has claimed “The traditional approach where students learned from the teacher standing in front of the room has long been left behind.” (Hayre, 2014) Now the issue is using the technology at hand properly to help enhance the learning for each student.
