Why We Should Allow Syrian Refugees into America Fear is taking over. All around you is fear, surrounding you, taking control. We let the fear sway our emotions, our perceptions, our ideology. Everything is constantly changing because of what we fear. Our morals are being betrayed because of fear; our instincts are being denied because we give into fear. That is why so many people are afraid to let innocent, terrified people into our country. Although, many see the Syrian refugees fleeing from the crisis into their country as a threat, there is no reason to be afraid. The refugees should be allowed into the United States. Because of fear, people have the misconception that the refugees could bring disease or illness that would cause widespread sickness or death. In all reality, there is no reason to worry about such things. The CDC has a detailed list of all known ailments and their cures (if known): “ Diseases & Conditions A-Z Index” (Office of the Associate Director for Communication, Division of Public Affairs) So, during the process that all people entering and leaving the United States must go through, these ailments would be recognized and cured; and the refugees would be perfectly healthy for their eventual settling in the U.S. Our system for this scenario has been gone over multiple times and tested on hundreds of people; and we know that for all those people, it has worked. There is a multi-stage, multi-year process that occurs only after they are vetted by the United Nations that is in place to make sure that this does not happen: “The history of the U.S. refugee program demonstrates that the lengthy and extensive vetting that all refugees must undergo is an effective deterrent for terrorists” (Bier). Plus, from the perspective of ISIS, the refugees are traitors. Not only that, but, none of the attacks that have occurred in America have been because of ISIS, they were all “inspired” by ISIS: “ According to ISIS, Syrian Muslim refugees are traitors to the radical Islamic cause. ‘It is correct for Muslims to leave the lands of the infidel for the lands of Islam, but not vice versa,’ one ISIS video said in September” (Bier). More-so, considering that the only ISIS members that have slipped through the system were caught within the matter of five days or less ; before they had the chance to cause any damage: Since 1980, the U.S. has invited in millions of refugees, including hundreds of thousands from the Middle East. Not one has committed an act of terrorism in the U.S. (update for those unwilling to read the source, the Boston bombers were not refugees)” (Bier) this does not seem to be a problem.
