Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion concentrates on the Scopes trial, otherwise called the "Monkey Trial," which happened in Dayton, Tennessee in the mid year of 1925. The trial occurred in excess of a Tennessee law that banned the educating of human development out in the open schools. The American Civil Liberties Union needed to test the law, and a junior instructor named John Scopes, consented to help them. The alleged "trial of the century" united the well known government official and speaker, William Jennings Bryan, who headed the opposition to development campaign; and Clarence Darrow, who was viewed as the best criminal protection legal advisor of the time. The two men, plus their individual direction, clashed in the trail with the indictment in the end ready to maintain the law.

In Rick Bragg’s “Endless Summer,” the author conveys his nostalgia and portrays how, to him, summer has changed for kids as time has progressed. He speaks about how summer seemed to last so much longer back then- stating that time “didn’t fly. It lolled.” Obviously, time can’t actually change speeds, this just emphasizes how slow it felt to him as a child. Furthermore, summer felt so prolonged, it was almost as if it would never end. Larson himself has a law degree, Ph.D. in history, and is a history and law professor at the University of Georgia making him more than qualified to elaborate on the accounts of this historical trial. Summer for the Gods describes the events leading up to the Scopes trial, trial itself, and the aftermath that takes place in 1925. Artists, in general, attempt to make each of their works different, in spite of the methodology being identical. In the case of two of Ray Bradbury’s stories, All Summer in a Day and If Only We Had Taller Been, this statement is verifiable in some components, yet not in others. They correspond in the setting, theme, and style, but nonetheless, they differ in conclusion, emotion, and developing. Reading both storylines creates a realization and understanding of not only the author, but also the hidden messages.

Summer by Josiah Conder , is describe as an a completely opposite Summer than the one everyone is familiar with. When thinking of the summer, thoughts of heat, vacation, and fun are usually associated with it. Conder describes the Summer as being a miserable time, where the skies are gray and gloomy. The sonnet itself is English/Shakespearean model which makes it easier for Conder to express different ideas in each quatrain but still relate them. Also Conder was a poet during the Romantic era where any feeling could be expressed towards anything. And that is what Conder does when describing the Summer. In the poem the speaker is having a conversation with no one , while they describe the Summer. Conder uses diction, imagery, alliteration and metaphor to help convey the idea that the Summer is not as fun and appealing.

One is able to notice the clear connections between Fosters explanation of seasons, and the use of summer vacation in Oates’s short story. The first time summer vacation is mentioned in the story it is followed by mentioning Connie's desire for the boys the she often daydreams about. “...and the rest of the time Connie spent around the house - it was summer vacation - getting in her mother’s way and thinking, dreaming about the boys she met.”(Oates, 2) The trait of adulthood, romance, and sexual experience are all part of the characteristics of summer. The author uses summer in order to set the mood for this novel, as summer initially signifies this romance and sex in this story. The sex aspect of summer is not always used positively as it soon becomes part of Connie’s downfall. The genre historical fiction focuses young readers to inform them about historical and significant cultural events in history, but to do in a way that is comfortable for readers in this age group. One Crazy Summer is a good example of young adult literature of highlighting cultural/historical events and entertaining to its audience. Two characteristics that make this a great novel for middle school readers is that 1- It encourages further inquiry( historical) and 2-The situations and characters are relatable (Y/A novel).

In the novel, “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, the seasons develop actions and characters in the story. The story takes place at an all-boys boarding school in New Hampshire during World War II based off of the author’s previous experiences at a boarding school. The two main characters, Finny and Gene, experience character development alongside different seasons. In written works, seasons are commonly used to symbolically represent a change in the character’s personalities. The nature or setting of the story is used to specifically evolve Finny and Gene in seasons such as the summer, autumn, and winter. Each season change also generates an entirely different mood.

We have observed two different short stories, one called “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, and another called “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. “Examination Day” is about how when a person becomes 12 years old they have to take an examination determining their intelligence. Anyone with an intelligence above the norm is considered unacceptable. Anyone smarter than the norm is eliminated. In the short story “All Summer in a Day”, the author Ray Bradbury uses sensory imagery such as sight and sound to describe the setting of his version of planet Venus and to describe the children. He then uses the absence of sensory imagery when describing Margot to create contrast which helps us understand the idea that people who are different are ostracised and hated.

Try conceptualizing a world with perpetual rain. This is the world that Bradbury creates in his short story, “All Summer In a Day. A group of scientists and their children live on Venus, a planet that only sees the sun for an hour every seven years. The kids that immigrated here are only 9 years old. They do not remember the sun, as they have only seen the sun once, 7 years ago. But, there is a girl named Margot. Unlike the other kids, she was born on earth and moved to Venus 5 years ago. She has distinct memories of the sun. This causes her to stand out from the other kids. The loss of the sun causes her to grieve. The children living on Venus treat Margot mercilessly in jealousy due to her prior knowledge and experiences. This causes Margot to be a victim of depression, harassment, and denial.

The author applies personification when he states "ease bed" to illustrate how the town is in a calm environment. We can imfer that its before sunrise,and the town is still seized by the pillows' dreams. Furthermore, he creates a vivid image by implying that "the world had the proper touch, the breathing of the world," to show the slow pace of the summer arrival. This helps us understand how the little boy values time and wants to enjoy summer to the fullest. The use of hyperbole is implied towards the middle of the excerpt to give a landish emphasis. For instance, The author exaggerates when he States that the little boy "is riding high in the June wind" to set the mood and setting.Douglas Spaulding feels all the power ,as he is in the cupola bedroom a variety of emotions drive with his wild imagination .In addition ,the author over emphasizes that the little boy would bake "ten thousand chickens" to express the way Douglas feels .It's summer the boy feels he can do anything and hes overwhelmed of all the things he is capable of doing throughout the season .

Kids can be  cruel when they are envious as shown in the short story, “All Summer In A Day,” by Ray Bradbury. The sun is what makes Margot happy, and when that gets taken away from her. In this short story there is several acts of cruelty to Margot by her classmates. These kids live in the planet of Venus, and they haven’t seen the sun in seven years, except for Margot. The kids are only nine years old so they haven’t seen the sun since they were two years old, but Margot moved there from Earth when she was four and she remembers the sun and that makes the other kids envious. In the beginning of the story it is the day that the sun is supposed to come out for the first time in seven years! The kids were skeptical except for Margot because she wanted to see it so bad. The kids were starting to prepare for the sun to come out but they were sitting inside waiting. While they were waiting the kids decided to lock Margot in a closet and not let her out. When the sun came out all the kids ran outside to play in the sun that felt so warm and nice on their skin, except for Margot, who was sitting inside in the dark closet. When the kids came back inside they felt sorry for leaving Margot in there. Envy can lead people to commit awful acts and cause shame as demonstrated throughout the character's actions in, “All Summer In A Day.”

“It has been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the dystopian story, “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury, it takes place on the planet, Venus. A group of children, along with scientists get to live there, while being educated at the underground school. Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.

Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can make or break a film. In the film The Kings of Summer, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, these two elements collaborate to highlight certain emotions and key moments in the film’s plot. Some of the sub-elements of these two components that can easily be identified within the film include the flashforward, the flashback, both nondiegetic and diegetic sound, semi diegetic sound, graphic matching and voice offs. Within the film The Kings Of Summer, editing and sound are methodically and tactfully utilized in order to produce a film that is both entertaining and meaningful for the audience.
