Strategies for Enhancing Child Development Kelcie Roscoe University of Florida Strategies for Enhancing Child Development Many different types of development are important for helping children to be successful through their schooling, and even later on into their lives. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss strategies that I would like to use in my future classroom to help students with their emotional, literacy, cognitive, and social development to help my future students to succeed. Emotional Development To enhance my students’ emotional development, I think it is very important to help the student develop their ideas of possible selves. Possible selves can either be negative or positive. Negative possible selves are what someone does not want to become, and positive possible selves are what someone wants to become (Cade, 2015b). The objective for teachers is to help students to have balanced possible selves, so they are able to monitor their goals and become who they want to be. Developing balanced possible selves also helps students to be more optimistic and believe that they can change (Oyserman, Bybee, Terry & Hart-Johnson, 2004). An important thing to do to help students achieve these possible selves is to have students discuss and set goals for what they want to become, and also discuss what they do not want to become. Students also must be able to analyze how they can become their positive possible selves and how to avoid their negative possible
New parents - and even experienced moms and dads - are often intimidated by the prospect of raising an infant. The possibilities seem endless, but so do the opportunities to make tragic mistakes. You want to make good choices; you want to ensure your little one develops into a happy, healthy toddler; and you want to avoid doing anything that might impair her success later in life. It's an ambitious goal.
In my Child Development class, I learned many concepts about the development of children, but the three concepts I found the most interesting were Shaken Baby Syndrome, the methods of learning, and the different types of care for the mother’s and baby’s health. I am writing this essay to discuss these three concepts of the child’s development.
Childhood development encompasses the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional changes from birth until the end of adolescence (White, Hayes & Livesey, 2013). Throughout childhood, environment and genetics promote or discourage growth and development. This essay will analyse the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional domains in relativity to my own development from the prenatal stage until adolescence. Psychological and environmental theories are used to develop the understanding and connection between each domain and stage of development. Lastly, this essay will address the controversial nature verses nurture debate and its relevance to my childhood development.
Spending a few minutes around a child of any age will reveal how much children love to play. On the surface, play may seem like an activity children should engage in when they are not learning. However research indicates great benefits of play. Those of us involved in early childhood education should be mindful to keep up with current research on developmentally appropriate practices, like play. Play supports children’s development in the important domains of physical, aesthetic, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development.

From the beginning of the history, child development was not given an importance but now majority of people have understood its importance. Attachment theory is one of the major theories of child development. According to Bowlby, attachment is characterized by specific behaviours in children, such as seeking proximity with the attachment figure when upset or threatened. There were number of issues that have been debated throughout the history of developmental psychology. One of them was nature-nurture debate. Philosophers such as Plato and Descartes supported the idea that some ideas are inborn whereas thinkers such as John Locke believed that experience helps us to gain the knowledge and our minds are blank at birth.
Arguably, the most vital and significantly influential time in the development of a person’s being is during their childhood years.
In the early 19th Century, little attention was given to children development. Emphasis were based upon what a child would become as they get older( Green 2013)However, it was investigated by human developmental psychologist that Child development is relevant in relation to how individuals relate in the environment as well as the factors that influence human development. These psychologists developed the human developmental life span which is predominant in the society today, although remains unsubstantiated because of the dynamics of individuals and the environment. The theories that will be discussed mainly in this essay are;Cognitive theory-Jean Piaget, Social Learning Theory-Albert Bandura, Psycho-social theory-Erik Erikson ,Socio-cultural theories-Lev Vygotsky. The Psychoanalytic theory will be explored to reflect on how his theories have been integrated into other human developmental theories. Based on my observations,these theories will be explored in detail.

Child development is defined as the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth to teenage year from dependency to increase independence. The physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth that takes place in the first years of a child’s life sets the foundation for success or failure in learning and life. It is known that to guide a child to gain his or her optimal potential, it’s essential to understand their need and help them in fulfilling it. Development study by Erikson explores how a child develops from birth to age eight from all perspectives: physical/motor, cognitive, social, emotional, and language. It focuses on how development occurs within the context of family, community, culture,
Piaget believed that cognitive structures and abilities developed first. Cognitive abilities then determine children’s abilities to reason about social situations (Slavin & Schunk, 2017). Piaget did not believe that younger children understood the concept of moral reasoning, but believe that they respond to rules and disciplinary actions. Piaget propose that moral development progress in predictable stages (Slavin & Schunk, 2017). As my children started aging between 5 and 10 years old, everything that I modeled they followed or any adult figure in the household. They thought this was the norm at this age. At this age, children assume that everything that they see from an authority figure is correct. As I grew up in my 2-parent home, I knew that anything that my father or mother told me, I had to do because if I didn’t I would get punished in some form or fashion. Considering, they never told me anything wrong to do. I lived in a God-Fearing home.
The development of children is rather universal occurring in similar stages among cultures. I observed three and four-year-old in the green room at the Children’s Center at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. Generally, these are the professor’s children that spend the day there while they are teaching classes. Multiple concepts that we discussed in class were expressed while observing the children. The diversity of development of the group rather surprising. For three and four-year-olds, the gap between development was substantial. The main topics I experienced, with the widest developmental gaps while observing were cognitive development, intelligence/academic skills, emotional development, and social interactions.
The Montessori method of education is one of the very unusual approaches of educating young children that has been based on the experiences and research of educator and physician Maria Montessori (1870–1952). The method basically arose from what Dr. Montessori’s discovered and named it the “the child’s normal nature” back in 1907 (Montessori, 1972). This happened during one of her experimental observations with young children who had been given the freedom they need d in an environment that was fully prepared with all the materials and was specifically designed to support their self-directed learning experiences (Montessori, 1977).

To help teachers to identify potential problems in development too make sure the child’s development is on target. I believe teachers need to challenge children more in the classroom, because it will help children gain the skills to work harder in their subjects. Teachers need to have a positive partnership with the parents, because it can help the children to have a positive relationship with their teachers as well. Teachers need always have age-appropriate learning activities centers and age-appropriate curriculum in their classroom this will help them reach there developmental milestones. I believe school need to help children more learning
As students achieve developmental competencies, their perceptions of themselves and their opportunities should become better defined.
