When we first meet a new person, we are all guilty of creating judgements and stereotypes based on things such as culture, appearance, and initial personality. Someone meeting me for the first time would likely judge my culture by labeling me as white, a country girl, a Christian, Midwestern, and a blonde. Individual stereotypes they would initially give me might include, young, quiet, mature, weird, and caring.

Stereotyping is when a judgement is made on a group of people because of the actions of a few. Stereotyping happens because of misinformation and other people’s opinions.

Stereotyping is a form of social categorization which affects the behavior of those who hold the stereotype and those who are labeled by a stereotype.

Stereotyping and discrimination are very deeply ingrained in American culture. Even though there have been movements taken to combat stereotyping and discrimination such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter Movement, it still exists. This raises the question of, how do we end it? While there is no definite answer there is a way to avoid stereotyping and discrimination. The three essayists Bharati Mukherjee, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Brent Staples and show that by learning about stereotyping, people can also learn how to change themselves to avoid discrimination based on stereotypes. By comparing and contrasting these essayists experiences as well as outside research to show the theme of why people

Many people are used to categorizing a group of people by a solo characteristic, known as a stereotype. Stereotyping leads to prejudice. If I am walking in a park and I see a group of people walking towards me (lets say all are white males) and they are dressed up and look very nice. I do not panic, now another group is walking towards me and now this group is all men (African Americans) and they are dressed and conduct themselves just the same as the first group, but I panicked with this group. Why because I stereotyped the second group and if I was prejudice no matter how they dressed or acted I would be afraid of them because they are black. I judge them based on skin color and not on individuality.

I commend you for openly saying that you have such bias against that group of people. However, as a police officer, it is your responsibility to serve and protect the people. Meaning, you have to protect everyone regardless of their gender preference. You are on your way to acceptance because you have acknowledged the problem and you can do it. We have biases towards certain groups of people, race you name it. However, it takes a brave person to acknowledged

Stereotyping is holding the thought that the members of a particular group are all of the same character or thinking. For example: that all accountants are boring, all red heads are bad tempered, all skinny people are anorexic, all girls play with dolls, all boys play with cars, etc. Stereotyping makes assumptions about members of a particular group, solely because of their membership in that group.

I remember the feeling of my stomach dropping when it couldn’t be found. We looked everywhere but it was nowhere to be found. What was I gonna do? I needed it to play the game and if I didn’t play the game it might be over. I needed to get another one quick but I didn’t want to tell anyone because they would be so mad.

Stereotyping is rampant throughout the world and people worldwide are stereotyped based on many factors. Stereotypes are generalities about a specific group of people that can be positive; however most stereotypes are distinctly negative. When a group is stereotyped, a definite and distinct set of characteristics attributed to that group of people based on a preconceived appearance of that group. Stereotyping is particularly problematic since it can lead to further discrimination and prejudice. Obviously, the stereotyped group is left with feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and a sense of being ostracized. While race and gender are some of the most common factors of stereotyping, there is another factor that leads to stereotyping,

Stereotyping is when someone judges a group of people or a person based on their appearance or religion, race and etc. it could also be judging a person based on your own opinion and encounters.

What are stereotypes?Can they hurt people?Or even help someone?Well stereotypes are generalizations that everyone puts any given group of people under, now saying this from personal experience i find that there may be both positive and negative effects of others doing this. The ways i have experienced stereotypes range from my own parents to random people like teachers and peers, what i got the most was that I was childish and immature from mostly my Dad and that “typical teenage boy” from my teachers also even i told myself i was more mature than the peers around me.

To a young me, the world was black-and-white. The virtuous will remain good while the immoral will stay wicked, no shade of grey existing. The notion that humans can change their nature was ludicrous. Living in a society where sorting human beings into stereotypes is the norm only served to reinforce that idea. One day, though, the action someone who should stand for justice forced my eyes opened.
