Optimism. What is it really? Many people misjudge what it really means to be optimistic. As someone who likes to think of themselves as an optimistic person, I understand how you could be stereotyped. Someone who is optimistic doesn’t necessarily fall under the guidelines, stereotyped by society. The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think of someone being optimistic might be, unrealistic, cheesy, or “sounds like a guidance counselor”. But being optimistic doesn’t mean you are unrealistic, simply hopeful. I’m not talking Snow and Charming from Once Upon a Time, it is not humanly possible to be that hopeful. People hear an optimistic person and think “oh I’ve heard that a thousand times” or “Oh that’s so cringy and cheesy,” but really you could just be a close-minded person. In reality, everyone has thought this at least once. What most people don’t understand is that certain optimistic phrases and sayings are overused or cheesy for a reason. These phrases include “there’s no such thing can’t” “nothings impossible” or “the glass is half full.” This controversy actually has an easy fix, “glass half full or empty?,” I say just fill it up then it’ll be full! They would not be said as much if they weren’t true. Though this is the stereotype for optimistic people, many are not walking around saying things like “nothing’s impossible.” In my own personal experience, I have learned that optimism is not only a verbal trait. When we are optimistic that we can get a job done, or that we can find a cure for a disease, we are more motivated, and we work harder. One can be optimistic in any situations with any emotions, it depends on the view and personality of the person in mind. You feel happy when you are optimistic. This can result in you feeling more energetic, give you brighter eyes, and bring you success and happiness. You also walk with more confidence and have a stronger voice. Also, your positivity can spread to others, however, any negativity can also spread. Some ways to be positive are to not allow what other people say about you get to you. Other ways are to smile more, try to only visualize positive things, use positive words when talking to people, and don’t give up. Having a positive attitude is the best response to conflict, especially in time of war. Optimists such as Winston Churchill and Anne Frank kept hope for a better future throughout World War II.
This Ted Talk is about optimism bias which is the tendency to think more positively about a person’s life than to think negatively. We have these high expectations that good things would happen than bad ones. It is a positive bias towards an event before the event actually happens. The optimism bias is a naturally occurring phenomenon that seems to become part of human nature because it is an overall tendency to bring upon good things in life over a pessimistic bias (Sharot, 2011).
Optimism can mean the difference in a patient’s outlook. The first example is when I walked onto the unit one day; a family member approached me and told me that it was nice to see a smiling face. That meant a lot to me. Patients and their families both experience hardships and emotional changes when someone is sick or hurt. Leading me to the next example, being optimistic when my patients fear that they may not return to their former state of independence and acknowledging their concerns. Many patients have these valid fears, and being the positive outlook instead of agreeing with them sometimes helps get them to the finish line.

There are times in this world when rolling out of bed and putting on a brave face is the only thing that seems sensible enough to get you through the day. You slurp down your morning cup of coffee, glare at yourself in the mirror, and wonder what’s the point of it all? Why am I living my life half exhausted wandering from place to place doing what I’m told when I’m told to make myself a living? This is exactly how a pessimist often thinks;, they tend to see only the worst in a scenario or believe that only the lowest possible situation will happen. I have chosen not to live my life like that, I have chosen to not only try to lead each day with a positive mind and a healthy attitude, but I have also decided to spread optimism to others by the simple gestures such as a smile. What is optimism? Optimism is reaching deep down and finding the confidence and hopefulness in yourself to overcome whatever may be holding your back. Challenges are constantly being thrusted into one’s life, and the difficulty of them is what makes us strive to get through it. Whether the challenge be big or small, there is always something to look forward to in life.
Moreover, ways of thinking, taking actions, and putting a decision can create a different result when being optimistic. In my life, I try to keep an optimistic attitude about the things I do because I know it will help lead me to more desirable ends. There have been many situations in which optimism has helped me through difficult times. Two areas in particular have provided me optimistic experiences: athletics
