56% of Americans have a social media profile, in this statistic, more than half of Americans use this popular tool on the internet, but is the tool effecting us in a good way or a bad way? Social media, a tool used to communicate to your friends, family and others in a useful way, a thing that’s risen dramatically in the last decade, social media is a very useful tool to see what your friends or family are doing , but social media is also a very dangerous place if not careful enough, cruel people like cyberbullies or even identity thieves lurk around on social media websites. Social media is a good way to see what your friends, family, or even your favorite celebrities are doing. But it’s also a great to find past

But there’s also a big chunk of people that find social media a big waste of time and think people need to just go out more. Face to face communication is what they think is the way it should be. Though, this is the normal human way people should be communicating. But social media is just a awesome way to communicate with friends or family who are a distance away. Its just a brilliant way to find old friends from the past.
Making new friends on social media is also fun. People even find their future wives or husbands on social media websites. But people don’t know the risks on social media websites. Cruel people who like to harass mostly young kids or teens lurk around to find someone to bully. That’s why its so important to be extra careful on social media and the most safest thing, put your profile on private. Setting a social media profile on private prevents people like cyberbullies to harass you, even protects your identity. It would be strictly the people you add as friends who get to see your posts or pictures. There are even people who look for your private information to take your identity, that’s one of the reasons to be careful about what you post on your profile. I’m not saying social media is nothing but a dangerous place to be on, I’m just saying people need to know the things they do on it and need to know the consequences from it.
It’s a great way to socialize, but it shouldn’t be a tool that you abuse, people who check their phones constantly take up
In this day and age it is not uncommon to see a family at dinner with their heads in their phones instead of submersing themselves in conversation with one another. Friends and family alike know more about each other by looking at ones Facebook wall rather than by holding a simple conversation. Ones life is no longer played out by communicating face to face or even through a landline, but rather by Facebook statuses and Instagram posts. It is no secret that social media has become
When used properly it can be very useful in keeping people who are overseas or across the country stay in better contact. At the same time when not used in the correct ways more relationships can be destroyed than made closer. When people constantly post everything people feel as though they already know everything that is going on. When this happens, many think what is the point in calling or going by to see how people are because they see everything. There is no need for that extra effort when all that is needed is to log on to the internet which most people carry around on their cell phones on a daily basis any way. Most things that people need to see are all held on one small device that we can carry around. And when people do feel the need to go and meet up it is not as meaningful as it was back before social media became such a popular item
Social media is used by everyone. 71% of high schoolers say they utilize more than one of these social networking sites: Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Vine and Tumblr (Lenhart). These sites can benefit people, but can also hurt them. The creators of these sites did not intend for people to abuse them. They were made for everyone 's enjoyment. They can also be very informative and relaxing. Unfortunately, when people continue to misuse social media there can be serious consequences.
Even though the social media I listed above, FaceBook, has privacy settings none of your information is really private. Even if you have things just available to your friends or family, they could share whatever it is that you posted and next thing you know, your picture is being photoshopped for some Tumblr picture. It also doesn’t help that your picture, especially your profile picture on websites, is on Google images. I actually know this because I’ve seen my face on Google images because I’ve looked it up.

Cyberbullying has become one of the biggest problems on social media, it is easy for one to hide their identity under a fake profile and bully others via message or commenting on their pictures/posts.
Some people say that social media damages personal communication, as well as, existing friendships. According to professor Charles Steinfield, “Everyone is hiding behind a screen,” which results in loss of communication skills (Davis). However, according to Time Magazine article, “ Does Facebook Replace FaceTime or Enhance it?, social media is an amazing way to stay connected with friends, meet new people, and congregate with old and new friends(Davis).
