Once a student enters the building on their first day of school they long await summer break. Yet, districts around the nation are changing that, instead of giving a two and a half summer vacation, they are asking students to go to school instead. This is a controversial issue because some parents agree with the decision, while others don’t. Instead of vacations and lying around at home during summer break, students will be given more textbooks, homework and tests. Although they do attend school throughout summer break, they do get periods of time off throughout the school year which gives them a break. The government should apply the year-round schooling method in our district because cost is not much of an issue, it helps teachers, and the …show more content…
The whole reason students attend school is to gain the knowledge that is necessary to live life in the future. Throughout the years of progression, students are able to inherit a tremendous amount of information that will be useful in their life later on whether it’d be in college, their job etc. Year-round schooling can boost that knowledge even more! Looking at the ABCNews video, Margaret Trimer Hartley, a superintendent at Detroit’s university Press Science and Math, she states that with the year-round schooling, the biggest benefit is that they deliver results. When students go out on summer break it is very common for them to lose what they learned about the year before so the teachers have to review it with them for the first month of school. Yet, with the year-round schooling, students wouldn’t be keen to losing the memory. This would later give teachers more time to teach the students newer lessons, which will build up their knowledge. Heartly states that, “Test scores for kids raised 25% in California with year-round schooling” (ABCNews). This statistics shows that there are results and they are positive. With test scores being raised, teachers are noticing that students are able to learn more things and later remember it so when they take a test, the results would increase. Year-round schools have gained popularity among the United States, being a very communicated topic within middle class communities. These schools are generally argued about by whether they are beneficial or not. While there are many advantages to year-round schools, there are some disadvantages as well. Year round schooling is better than regular school because, it allows the kids to retain more information and not lose what they learned, they also allow them to graduate earlier with higher retention levels. In discussion of Year Round Schooling, one controversial issue has been whether year round schooling is a good idea or not. People believe that year round schooling is a good thing and that it will increase academic achievement levels and benefit the students more than anything else. Students will also be able to advance more quickly since the schooling is year round, they have less to forget since the breaks are shorter. On the other hand people seem to believe that year round schooling takes away from the students and gives them less family time and less of an “Outside of school life” (NEA). In the research of year round schooling it shows that absences are most likely to be higher since it is year round. Their view is that we think that many students can benefit from year round schooling, and that is has more benefits than anything else.
In conclusion, year-round school is an awful idea because students actually look at summer break as a break, parents have plenty of stress on them already, and some schools already have financial trouble. Rarely anyone thinks that year-round school is a good idea, so it would be easier for everyone if the idea was just gone for good. Going to school year-round would be stressful for everyone involved, and everyone involved already has enough stress on them as it is. School, as it is now, works just fine and doesn’t need to
Does year round school truly have a positive impact in the lives of students? Various studies do suggest that year round school is helpful. There are some disadvantages to this type of schooling that are preventing all schools from switching to this type of scheduling. In earlier times schools were only teaching throughout half of the year so that school would be out of session when it was time to work in the fields. This type of scheduling is still common today even though only a small portion of agriculture is tied into education and kids are no longer required to work. “In 1994, the National Education Commission on Time and Learning (1994) urged school districts to develop school calendars that acknowledged (a) differences in student learning and (b) the major changes taking place in American society. The report reflected growing concern about how the school calendar relates to students at risk for academic failure” (Cooper, Nye, Charlton, James, & Greathouse). There is controversy over whether or not summer break makes kids forget what they should have previously learned. Coming from myself, a senior in high school, summer break is all about forgetting school and living it up during the duration of the break. This causes teachers to have to pretest students to see what all they actually did remember and then go over the same material trying to get them to remember. With year-round schooling you do not have to worry as much about the loss of learning. The longest break with year-round schooling is three weeks. Any break will causes some memory loss but the three month break that regular schooling provides makes the chances not remembering material increase greatly. Year-round schooling, allows the same
According to the National Association for Year-Round Education, students will be able to advance more rapidly if they did year-round schooling. A by-product of summer break is the dividing of classes based on age. If schooling was year-round, there would be less distinction between one year and the next. This only teaches us to work with people from our generation. If we had year-round schooling we could advance quicker and work with people from different generations, just like how it would be in the future with jobs. Also, the constant learning environment takes away the emphasis of when the student started school and instead emphasizes skill
When I return to school after summer, I always struggle to remember anything from the months before. For this reason, I personally think kids should go to a year round school. Moreover, kids shouldn’t have such a long summer vacation. Students should go to a year-round school for more intersessions throughout the year, so they have less stress, it will be easier to remembering what they learned, and year-rounds schooling has smaller intersession you can use if you are falling behind, you can catch up.

Academics is the one thing that year round schooling has proven without a doubt to help increase. Students have less time to lose the information, and also have more time for the information to be reinforced throughout the year.

Imagine going to school on the first couple of weeks back from summer break. After the introductory period ends and the learning phase starts up again, children sit there staring blankly at the board. They can forget a lot of things after two and a half months of being a couch-potato. In year-round school, kids have shorter breaks, which means teachers spend less time reviewing work from last year and more time moving forward academically. Most teachers and educators “keep the learning process ongoing with minimal disruption,” (scholastic.com 1). Teenagers need to have a job and they can’t do that with year round school. Julia Sines, Journalist of Pantagraph says “Some students work over the summer to save up money for college, so with school being year-round, they wouldn't get that opportunity”. (“The Pros and Cons”). If students have year round school, then they wouldn’t be able to make money because instead of working they are at school. So students should not have year round schools so they can get good jobs for college.
