Should School Uniforms Have Uniforms

Society is made up of different body types and uniforms are just that, uniform. Wearing something that does not fit right is extremely uncomfortable and distracting. If a student sitting in the classroom is trying to pay attention to a lesson, but has to constantly adjust their clothing in a worthless attempt to get comfortable, this can be extremely disruptive to the class as a whole because the teacher has to periodically remind the student to stop fidgeting and pay attention. The drawing of this attention to the student and their clothing can be detrimental to their self-confidence, and make them a target for other students to make fun of them. “The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) opposes uniforms on the grounds that they violate students’ rights to freedom of expression as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution.” (“School Uniforms”). How a student dresses will not directly improve their grades, and making them wear a uniform will curb their expression of individuality. Having to alter a uniform to fit body type can get extremely expensive.

First, uniforms help improve students focus on their education. It disciplines students to take their attention away from outward appearance such as clothing and places it on actual school work. Uniforms create guidelines for the student to follow which is an aspect of life that a student needs to learn. A study of a Long Beach school found that their was a 28% drop in suspensions, 51% drop in school fights, and a 34% drop in assaults after the

School is a place for education and not looks. This is relevant to my topic because school uniforms help a student focus on education and not how they look in the classroom. Today students need to focus on getting good grades and their attendance before worrying about how they can impress other students. One thing it helps is school work and focus in the classroom. It has led to students having better behavior and improving attendance. Uniforms are also cost effective for parents that can't afford name brand clothes.

Since everyone is similar no one is better than someone else. Uniforms allow everyone to be identical making no one person more superior than their peer. Having everyone dress the same gives people the sense of equality. Seeing everyone dressed the same as you gives you the sense of similarity and allows students to focus on schoolwork. 81% of teachers said that school uniforms have improved the learning environment (Statistics Brain). This uniformity gives students a sense of community, acceptance, and allows them to focus more on higher priorities.

School uniforms in public schools are becoming fairly popular across the nation. With consideration, schools can greatly benefit from school uniforms if schools pick up this policy. Actions against this policy will occur when changes are being made, but if we can learn to accept school uniforms, many benefits or positive effects will outweigh then negative effects. With much thought, I personally think schools should have school uniforms because there would be less bullying, students can focus on education, and students can also freely express themselves in numerous ways.

School uniforms is the key to a bigger, better future. The basic clothing procedure phases out many types of harassment and creates a safe learning environment. Uniforms take away harsh borders that separate classmates and create school spirit. The positive impact school uniform have on students is an overlooked opportunity we must be informed about to create the next successful generation.

Initially, uniforms are likely to lessen the discrimination between the social classes of students. If all students have to wear the same clothes, it would eliminate teasing other pupils through their clothes. In the article, “Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?” the author writes, “In a 2013 survey by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and uniform manufacturer Lands’ End, 86% of school leaders said uniform s make ‘a significant, positive impact in peer pressure,’ and 64% said uniforms reduce bullying.” The article also states, “Virginia B.Draa, Assistant Professor of Human Ecology at Youngstown State University, said uniforms can decrease peep pressure and blur class lines between students.” I believe uniforms help peers see each other in a different light, without judging by appearance.

The idea of uniforms being required for public school students has been a widely controversial topic in the recent past. In the 2003-2004 school year, only one in eight public schools required students to wear uniforms (ProConorg Headlines). In the 2013-2014 school year, one in five public schools required students to wear uniforms (ProConorg Headlines). This essay will discuss the reasons that uniforms restrict the individuality of students, burdens families that cannot afford two sets of clothes for each of their children (Farrell), and serve little to none purpose in benefitting the education of students. Uniforms are meant for the workforce, not school children.

Teachers, students, and parents today are faced with the question of if students should be allowed to wear uniforms or not. Many argumentative questions have aroused due this simple question. Many people believe student should wear uniforms making it better and easier on the students and parents. Whereas there are many people who would feel similar, but feeling as though students should not have to wear uniforms. There are many agreeable reasons to wearing a uniforms presented by many teachers, parents, and students. While there are even more reasons people will argue against wearing them.

Some students say it’s a good thing to wear uniforms because it’s more affordable for their parents and that just saves more money so whenever they ask for anything they can have it. Students feel pressured by other students when they can’t dress like they dress. If all students are dressed the same, everyone will feel equal.
