For many years the debate of the age one can legally drink and purchase alcohol has continued. Those who believe the age should lower suggest 18 as the proper age. However a plethora of people argue an 18 year old does not withhold the maturity to drink. On the other hand many positive aspects of allowing 18 year olds to consume and purchase alcohol, both in health, safety, and maturity. While alcohol may have damaging effects to one’s body, many benefits exist if one drinks responsibly. Many studies and cases do show alcohol can damage the liver and other parts of the body; however, when one drinks in a moderate manner many health benefits may exist. Alcohol helps to fight against various health conditions and risks common among many people, …show more content…
While the brain of an 18 year old still has not completely stopped developing, they have multiple other life-altering choices to make. When someone turns 18 they legally turn into an adult. One now has the ability to vote, enlist in the military, purchase tobacco products, and get married without the consent of a parental figure. These choices have potential to greatly impact the lives of the people making these decisions. Whether they select who they wish to run the country, start a life with someone, or put their life at risk these decisions require the thinking and decision-making process of an adult. If one has the ability to act on these choices, they should also have the opportunity to participate in purchasing and consuming alcoholic beverages, if they choose to do so. In conclusion by lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18 years of age, more positive outcomes exist than negative ones. A lower drinking age will allow for those of age to have a chance to learn a better sense of responsibility, decrease alcohol related incidents and provide several health benefits. As a legal adult those between the ages of 18 and 21 deserve the right to make the decision of whether they would like to participate in the consumption of alcohol or
Did you know that in the year 1980 the legal drinking age was only 18? In 1987 there was a law passed that said in order to drink legally and to buy alcohol a person had to be 21. At the age of 18 people are allowed to buy tobacco, vote, get married without parental consent, and even join the armed forces, so why can’t some one who is 18 by alcohol. This is a question I have; I believe that the legal drinking age should be 18. Dr. Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Heath Sciences at Indiana University, agrees with me also. She states, “the legal drinking age should be lowered to about 18 or 19 and young adults should be allowed to drink in controlled environments.” (Engs) These controlled places include
The legal drinking age in the United States is 21, while in other countries the legal age ranges from 16-18. The argument in the United States is “Should the United States lower its drinking age?” There are many sides to this argument but research has given many good points to back up both sides of the question. First thing is the difference between a teen’s brain with alcohol and an adult’s brain with alcohol. Another thing is drinking at a younger age can help teach culture. Lastly the more alcohol exposed the increase in death rate. I believe that it is a good idea to keep the legal drinking age at age 21 because in our past we have had many problems with death increases due to the drinking age being at different ages and the research used uses pathos, logos, ethos and Kairos to help persuade the reader support that 21 should stay the legal drinking age.
There are numerous problems involving alcohol in the world today, including alcoholism, drunk driving, and alcohol poisoning leading to death. Many of these problems involve minors and are linked to drinking underage. The legal drinking age in many states is twenty-one years old. The purpose of this law is to keep minors out of danger: away from drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and injuring the brain before it is fully developed. The government supports the belief that people are not ready or responsible enough for alcohol until this age. However, various professors and researchers are discovering ways to disprove this belief. These people think that reducing the drinking age to eighteen would influence our country in a positive
When a person reaches the age of eighteen they are seen as a legal adult: “adults should have the right to make their own decisions about alcohol consumption”(Drinking Age). Legal adulthood comes with all different types of rights and responsibilities with drinking not included. Eighteen year olds are given the right to vote, to smoke, to have consensual sex, and to get married without parental consent. this give citizens the ability to make decisions for the future of the country, the ability to do something that could cause future health problems, the ability to do something that could result in a baby which is additional responsibility, and the ability to separate from a family to start a new one. The responsibilities of being a legal adult are having total responsibility for one's actions and being trusted to not break the law because of being able to be charged as an adult now. An eighteen year old is also possibly in charge of someone's life depending on the type of case they could serve as a jury member on if selected. An eighteen year old boy is required to sign up for a system that if selected he would have to possibly die fighting for the country(What You Can). If eighteen year olds are old enough to fight for their country and old enough to make decisions that affect the health of themselves and the life of another person then why are they not trusted to make their own decisions regarding alcohol?
Why can’t eighteen year olds drink an alcohol beverage? Ever wonder if they can even handle drinking alcohol these days? Lowering the drinking age can cause a lot of problems to eighteen year olds who are excited for their first beer or whatever they are getting their hands on. The biggest question that should be asked is why should it be lowered? If they are trusted drinking alcohol at the age of 18 what can happen when they are extremely intoxicated at the young age of eighteen. Most high school seniors who are eighteen will be drinking and may go to their classes intoxicated and will or can cause a disturbance towards other students and may get arrested. People may think that eighteen year olds should be able to drinking because that’s the
Just because the drinking age in America is 21, doesn’t mean teenagers under 21 aren’t drinking. Even though it is illegal for teens to purchase alcohol, they are easily able to get their hands on it through other ways such as going through their parent’s liquor, older peers who can buy it for them, or buying from careless store owners. Should the legal drinking age in America be lowered to 18? No matter what, teens will always find a way to get it, so why doesn’t the government lower the drinking age? Lowering the drinking age would give 18 year olds the right to make their own decisions about consuming alcohol since the age of adulthood in the United States is 18, and by that it would decrease the excitement of breaking the law to get drinks, and decrease unsafe drinking activity.
Should 18 year olds be allowed to drink? This has caused both the alcohol industry as well as multiple government agencies to clash over this issue. The danger of having young 18 year olds being able to drive and drink outweighs any privileges or responsibilities they are already given at that age, like voting and obtaining tobacco. I agree that the drinking age should remain at 21 and not any lower. For one, the total amount of fatal car accidents due to alcohol has gone done since the creation of The 1984 National Minimum Drinking Age Act. Also, keeping it at the 21 for the minimum age gives young adults more time to mature in their thinking and decision making when it comes to drinking. Finally, to lower the drinking would endanger just the young consumer but his peers as well by putting their lives at risk and possibly tempting them to drink as well.
The risks of drinking alcohol are health issues, your body wouldn’t stay fit if you are drinking too much. Health issues for drinking can be a serious and damageable for you.
The question is: Should eighteen be the new drinking age? There are so many aspects to that one question. Are they mature enough, are their brains fully developed, and what about accessibility? Those are just a few thoughts on this hot topic. In 1984 President Reagan signed a bill that changed all states’ drinking age to twenty one. He found that in many states that had previously switched from a lower age to the twenty one age acquired lower rates of deaths caused from driving (Rowley 1). Just a few years difference in the age, but there was a dramatic amount of lives being saved. Teens have an immunity to alcohol, even if they have never had a drink. Being more immune results in more drinking, and leads to making not-so-smart decisions. Despite being a legal adult at the age of eighteen by law, individuals at this age still lack the overall maturity to be knowledgeable about the consequences of their reckless actions when drinking alcohol.
The United States’ legal age of adulthood is eighteen. A person may smoke cigarettes, vote in elections, get married, play the lottery, and join the military. If a person can make those decisions at eighteen, why not decisions on their own alcohol consumption?
When a teenager turns eighteen it is a huge stepping-stone in their life. However, being an adult has more responsibilities and freedom. For example, tobacco is now legally available for purchase to an eighteen year old, voting for our government officials, being able to marry, join juries, and sign contracts without a parent’s signature. Additionally, turning eighteen males have to sign up for the draft and can fight in the military; however, they cannot legally have a drink. Eighteen is the age when everyone becomes an adult. Therefore, should be trusted to make the decision to consume alcohol.
Should the drinking age be 18,19, or 21? In my opinion as I told the people in my group there shouldn’t be a drinking age there isn’t honestly a drinking age you could put down that is going to make anything better or anything worse. You will always have underage drinking it’s how these kids are raised and what they are around when they are growing up. I fell there should be classes in school that teach these kids what responsible drinking is how much and all the side effects that could come out of bad decisions. Just because there is an age set people look at it as oh you must be 21 to buy the alcohol but not 21 to drink. I fell the reason that they have an age set is because a lot of people don’t obey it which means they are making money
In the United States the current age to legally consume alcohol is twenty-one years of age. In other countries the legal drinking age for consuming or purchasing alcoholic beverages is eighteen, and in other countries there is no minimum legal drinking age at all. Based on extensive research, I believe the minimum age to legally consume or purchase alcohol should be no less than twenty-five years of age.
In discussion of legalizing 18 year old to drink, one controversial issues has been if there are mature enough to drink at that age. On the one hand many argue that eighteen year old aren’t responsible enough to buy alcohol let alone drink it. My own view is that there are legal to do anything else other than drink so why not let it be legal for them and get to do everything else as adult, people say eighteen your old are adults , so , why not start treating them as one.
Eighteen year old people should be allowed to drink alcohol. When our 18th birthday roles around we become of legal age. We sign for the draft and become eligible to fight for our country. Its possible now to be charged as an adult and spend life in prison and we can now purchase tobacco products and all other drug paraphernalia. I cant drink beer though, I must wait till my 21st birthday.
