The themes of short stories are often relevant to real life? To what extent do you agree with this view?

In the short stories “Miss Brill” and “Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding” written by Katherine Mansfield, the themes which are relevant to real life in Miss Brill are isolation and appearance versus reality. Likewise Frau Brechenmacher suffers through isolation throughout the story and also male dominance is one of the major themes that are highlighted in the story. These themes are relevant to real life as women are likely to suffer more in their life than men.

Through her actions which gives us an insight that she is emotionally isolated from her husband. Frau brechenmacher is also socially isolated, this is portrayed when one of the lady at wedding mentions “my dear you skirt is open at the back…we could not help laughing as you walked up the room with white tape of your petticoat showing”. Also highlighted when “all laughing at her because they were so much stronger then she was”. This quote refers to the point that she is emotionally weak, as she asserts her humanity through her fear. As the women laugh at her, Frau brechenmacher feels humiliated and betrayed by someone she expected to be united with. This theme is relevant to real life as in both the short story women are likely to struggle more than men.

Another theme which is highlighted in the story is male dominance which is portrayed when Frau Brechenmacher addresses Herr Brechnmacher by “the father”. This represents Herr Brechenmacher’s dominating character towards Frau Brechenmacher. This also shows a weak bond of understanding between Herr and Frau Brechenmacher. Reason for Frau Brechenmacher showing her submissive behaviour towards her husband as mentioned “girls have a lot to learn”. This highlights that she has learnt her lesson too well and passes the message onto the reader to give us an insight of role of women in early 19th century.
