This paper discusses what mental illnesses singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston is suffering with, how he deals with it, how well known he is and how other artists acknowledge him.

Most people face self esteem problems at different levels. At some point in life people face this problem without realizing it. In the essay The Trouble with Self-Esteem written by Lauren Slater starts of by demonstrating a test. Self esteem test that determines whether you have a high self-esteem or low self-esteem. The question to be answered however is; what is the value and meaning of self-esteem? The trouble with self-esteem is that not everyone approaches it properly, taking a test or doing research based of a certain group of people is not the way to do so.

Children's self-confidence and self-esteem are directly linked to the way in which they relate to others. Self-esteem can be high or low, positive or negative and is how we feel about ourselves and leads to our self-image, or how we think about or perceive ourselves.

The history of self-esteem can be traced back throughout time. In this section we have a critical look at the self-esteem movement.

According to Janet Gonzalez-Mena (1998.)”Self-esteem, along with self-identity, comes from early experiences and continues up through school years into adolescence and adult hood. Children define themselves partly by looking at the images that they see reflected in the people around them.”(Pg. 247)

I was second grader and departing for America, my friend and I were saying goodbye in front of the airport. He shouted to me in a way that everyone could hea r, just before I got inside, that I have to get into the airplane barefooted. I put my shoes in my carriage as he said. I didn't realize single thing before the man next to me burst into laughter and told me that there is no such rule as being barefooted. My friend always was my best friend as we went to the same school, same church and lived in the same apartment. However, my expectation for the airplane was satisfied as they had a television and I was overwhelmed by its enormous size. By taking the “Self-esteem Inventory” quiz I learned that my sell-esteem is good for the most part, but could use a boost in certain areas. For example, when answering the question “I can make up my mind without too much trouble” I realized this was not like me. More often then not I find myself being indecisive and contemplating choices. This is one thing I could work on to boost my self-esteem. Honestly answering the questions of the quiz made me realize what needs to be changed to improve my overall self-esteem.

There is a large percentage of people in this country that are struggling with issues related to self-esteem today. Self-esteem issues can be internal from one’s own beliefs or external from the ones that simply know the individuals that thinks so highly of

Positive or negative body image can highly affect one’s self-esteem. High self-esteem is important because “[self-esteem] can be viewed as a key indicator of psychological well-being” (Clay, 2005). Cognitive health can be just as vital as physical health. However, a study found a profound drop in teenage girls’ self-esteem (Clay, 2005). Young girls’ mental health is being affected by their poor body image. While lack of education, weight loss advertisements, and celebrities portrayal of healthy lifestyles are often underlying causes for girls’ poor body image, digital editing and media overrepresentation of underweight women are the biggest culprit.

It is however important to acknowledge that although many of these factors impact on our life situation, truly they are just symptoms. It is our core beliefs that shape our life experience; those things that we believe and think about ourselves, others and the world at large.

The media puts a copious amount of pressure on young girls (ages 14-18) today to have the ‘ideal’ body, like a model or a celebrity. The media has some damaging impact when it comes to body image and self-esteem as it glorifies unattainable ideals. Young girls can suffer from eating disorders, mental depression, and physical depression (Von. 2012).

I had some mix feelings about this self-esteem inventory since I personally been dealing with depression for over 10 years. I would say that if I took this exam 6 years ago, I would be rated with sever low self esteem due to how I personally viewed myself. I might of appeared on the outside of having high self confidence, but on the inside I was always critical of myself. Since my treatment and changing the way I view myself, my current score for this inventory is 38. This score somewhat surprised me since I thought it would be lower. I did score over 3 on the "lie scale" which I have mix feelings on but being close to the average male score of 40 makes me feel good. With my recovery, I learned how to fight back the old negative views I had

How could you improve as a student and/or employee? Is it through your self-talk or your self-esteem or through your self-image? Honestly it can be anything to make you get to that level. You got to believe in yourself and push to better yourself.

There are two types of media. There can be good media, and there can be bad media. One might also refer to the media as positive or negative. This paper will introduce some negative affects found as a result of children imitating and idolizing the media and the celebrities that go along with it. There are also positive results that come from the media; the media is not all bad. This paper will just focus on the bad affects I have found. The media spends billions of dollars to create advertisements that appeal to our youth. While those companies are just looking to make money and promote their products; they are doing so much more. Today's world is becoming more aware of the problems arising from negative media.
