The moment I fell in love with Selena Quintanilla, I was watching her movie recreating her life story. I was around the age of 6 or 7 when I first saw the movie on television on the anniversary of her death. Even though it has been over 20 years since her passing, every year without a doubt the movie is played and I’m watching it. I clearly remember after watching the movie for the first time, I listened to her music 24/7. Dreaming of you has always been my favorite song from her. Her soft voice, almost like a lullaby always helped me think of all the important people in my life. There are fans that comment on her YouTube videos, expressing their love for her and her music. Some of her fans had the opportunity to actually meet her and describe her as being close to her roots who worked hard and achieved her goals. She was nice to everyone she met regardless of their station in life. And, of course, she also made great music. For these reasons, she has become a role model to millions of people around the world. She was viewed as a positive, humble person and it was clear that it was not just the music but the person who made an impact. EMI President Jose Behar reflected on Selena shortly after her passing “When I think of Selena nowadays, what comes to mind is not her musical career, even though it was enormously successful and remains so more than two months after her death. Rather, I think about how much I miss this special person, who was so caring, so warm. I am convinced if she had lived Selena would have been a major, major star in the Anglo record world”. Selena was always passionate about her community and making the world better so before her death, she helped numerous organizations. After her death, her family created The Selena Foundation and it was established in May 1995 to receive the donations that people were sending out to her family after her death. It is clear that her fan base is loyal Fans of Selena Quintanilla even after 20 years of her death, still listen to her music, watch her movie and keep her memory alive. It would seem that the majority of her fan base would be Latin women ranging from ages of the early twenties and older but by reading comments on YouTube of various popular songs, it is clear that she had a wide range of fans. Hundreds of comments expressing their love for Selena and her music. Most comments are of people wishing she was still alive and creating music that would hit the top of the charts. Since she had her English album out shortly after her death, it expanded her fan base to an even larger audience. Even her music in Spanish created a large commotion. People on one of her numerous fan pages on Facebook talk about her music being an outlet, an escape from the bad and an extra push to overcome any challenge either with a relationship or simply just with the struggles of life. One fan expressed her mother’s heartbreak on the YouTube video of Dreaming of You, saying that she remembers the day of Selena’s passing and seeing her mother crying in the living room. A fan even going to the extent of saying that her death impacted more people than the death of John F. Kennedy.
