Samoa, officially the Independent State of Samoa (In Samoan: Malo Sa'oloto Tuto'atasi o Sāmoa), previously known as Western Samoa is an Oceanian nation in the South Pacific Ocean entailing its two primary islands: Upolu and Savai’i. Polynesian explorers were said to have arrived on the island thousands of years ago, however its oldest known site of human occupation was the settlement of Mulifauna on the island of Upolu, which dates back to about 1000 BC. The Samoans have many imperative social and spiritual essentials that form their culture. The Purpose of this essay is to discover particularly the features of clothing, tattoos and warfare.

Males bear the Pe’a, which consists of complex geometrical patterns that cover areas from the knees and up towards the ribs. The process for the Pe’a is tremendously painful which are performed by ‘tufuga ta tatau (master tattooists) who use handmade utensils of bone, tusks, turtle shell and wood. The process takes place with the subject lying on mats with the tattooist and his assistants beside him. The assistants are referred to as ‘solo’, the Samoan meaning the act of wiping the blood off skin. Family members of the subject often attend this process at a respectful distance to provide words of reassurance. This method may take up to less than a week, for some, years. Males who inherit the Pe’a are called Soga’imiti who are cherished for their courage. Non-tattooed Samoan males are called ‘telefua’ which literally means
The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom was the end of the Hawaiian monarchy and officially became part of the U.S. territory in the 1900s. The people who had overthrown the kingdom were originally called the Hawaiian League. They were a group of planters and businessmen who wanted to control the Hawaiian Kingdom they eventually changed their names to the Annexation Club then to the Committee of Public of Safety. After they had overthrown the Hawaiian monarchy, they created a provisional government to lead the Hawaiian kingdom. Afterwards, on January 12, 1898, Hawaii was officially annexed to the United States. The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom negatively impacted the Hawaiian Kingdom because it made Queen Liliuokalani give up her throne, took the independence of Hawaii, and changed the voting
Describe the interaction between the two leadership groups. What behaviors of the American representatives could create conflict with the Samoan leaders? Are there similarities from this meeting and the Blue Horizon Cruise simulation meeting?
The word Tattoo is believed to have originally come from the Samoan word “Tatau”. “The Samoan word for tattoo came from the Polynesian language, and the word tatau originates from the tapping sounds of the tool made during tattooing” (U.S National Park). The origins of the Samoan tatau have been passed down orally through
Margaret Mead got most of her information on the behavior of adolescents in Samoa from:
Hawaii, translated from the ancient Hawaiian language should mean paradise because that's what it is. Hawaii has a climate that varies only several degrees in temperature year round and the sun always shines. The rainy season is in January, but it isn't so rainy that it deters visitors. In fact, winter is one of the most popular times of year to visit Hawaii. This is probably because it is cold and dreary just about everywhere else in the United States. Hawaii makes for the perfect getaway for Californians because it is only about a three-hour flight.
Health insurance is not chicken noodle soup, advil and a good night's rest. It's a necessity in today's world. It pays for one's doctor visits, prescriptions, lab tests and etc. Without it, people would pay full price and some cannot afford either one, like college students. Hawai’i Community College is a great example, it has many diverse student populations and varies in age groups. Hawai’i Community College should pay for a health care clinic. It benefits the students in three ways: it saves money, it helps students go to the doctor more frequently, and it gives nursing students an opportunity to practice their careers.
Out of the six islands that make up Hawaii, the island of Oahu is the third largest and second oldest. Oahu is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and plate at a latitude and longitude of 21.4389° N, 158.0001° W (Wikipedia, 2016). The island was created from the pacific plate hot spot, a still active intrusion of magma. A hot spot is a geological feature where hot magma from the inside of the earth leaks out onto the Earth’s crust through cracks in the lithosphere. Once the ejected magma hardens it adds to the surface of the Earth, increasing the land elevation in the area surrounding the hot spot. Over millions of years, the collected cooled magma breaks the surface of the ocean, forming a small island. The islands of Hawaii were all formed from the same hot spot in the center of the pacific. The pacific plate moves in the Northwest direction relative to the North American plate due to typical plate tectonics. While this occurs, the hot spot in the pacific remains in the same place ejecting magma on to the Earth’s surface. The movement of the plate has
American Samoa would be a perfect location for an open market. The weather is warm and tropical with an average temperature of 87 degrees fahrenheit. American Samoa has a population of 54,157 people. I can set up my market anywhere that seems like a good location. My open market can sell goods grown locally on the island or import goods that most likely haven’t been owned by local people such as raw materials like sugar and salt etc.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States, which is controlled under the Organic Act of Guam, and this passed by the U.S. Congress, and which was approved by the president on August 1, 1950. Guam is an island that is in Micronesia that’s on the Pacific Ocean. There is only one big island of Guam, and it is surrounded by several tiny islands. Hagåtña is the capital of Guam, and the native Guamanians are called the Chamorros. The climate there is always constant, and is around 70 through 90 Fahrenheit. Guam imports a lot of goods, such as food in the United States. This all happened after when the World War II happened, which then Guam was controlled over The U.S. for its territory and for all most all of its food. Overall, Guam has a positive relationship between the United States of the America since it is guarded by them, so other countries can threat or
The Samoans are an ethnic group that reside in Oceania, on the islands of Samoa, in an area of Polynesia. Samoa has been occupied by these indigenous people for about 3000 years, when they came from the west, occupying the islands of Fiji and Tonga around the same time (Barnes and Hunt 2005, 243). They carry many traditions with their culture, however, I will be discussing their tradition of tattooing. Tattooing is the process of inserting ink pigment into someone’s skin to create a permanent design on them. For Samoans, tattoos are much more significant than just a pretty piece of artwork, they are, according to Ryman (2004), a right of passage. I will be reviewing the importance of cultural tattoos, the process of being tattooed, and the varying origin stories of how tattooing first came to Samoa. Samoan tattooing matters because it is a cultural tradition that has been practiced in Samoa for over 3000 years (Ellis 2006, 698).
Through it, people were given a look at a society not affected by the problems of 20th century industrial America. She illustrated a picture of a society where love was available for the asking and crime was dealt with by exchanging a few mats. This book helps one to realize the large role played by social environment. One of Mead’s biggest challenges was probably the fact that her fieldwork was done entirely in the Samoan language. In Samoa, few, if any natives spoke English.
Samoans believe the circular flying represents the cycles of life.” (Channell,18). In Samoa these tattoos are given to the chief of the family and he is the one who is fully tattooed. The tattooing is a very painful process and is done by taking pieces of sharpen bone and ink and taping the tattoo in with a mallet. The tattoo designs are beautiful designs consisting of many geometric shapes put together in a way they flows. The tattoo is much respected. Once started, it must be completed or it will bring shame upon the young man, and his family. After it is completed, the young mans gains new status among his people. With the receiving of his tattoo, he has now taken on the responsibly of being a man, and also to be an example and leader of his family.
The country I chose to do my report on is Fiji. I don’t know much about the country, but I like to drink Fiji water and I know it comes from there. I also think the name Fiji sounds pretty cool. I learned that Fiji was originally named “Viti” but when the islanders were pronouncing it, it sounded like ”Fiji”, so that is how it got recorded.
The island of Samoa, also known as the “Treasured Islands” or the “Independent State of Samoa” is located between the island of Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian area of the South Pacific. Samoan ancestors left their first mark on the island around 3,000 years ago. Researchers and scientists are still finding small traces of old pottery and belongings left behind. Samoans lived in villages, mainly in the coastal regions which included a vast and open area along with several residencies and huts used as meeting areas or cooking rooms. They later on evolved into using stones to
