This ruling effectively states that any state-law restricting marriage to male-female is unconstitutional. Imagine falling deeply in love with someone; having a happy long-term relationship with them. This person is the entire world to you, but although it is wanted by both partners, there can be no legal marriage. Because it is illegal to marry someone of the same gender. The United States of America were founded on the belief that everyone is equal and should be free to pursue happiness, yet there is oppression of a sexual minority that needs to end. Although there are many different people with many different reasons opposing same-sex marriage, such as religious or personal beliefs, it should not be illegal to marry someone of the same gender because not all people support it.

Our world changes day by day, but we do not realize it until we look back and everything is completely different. Over the years our government had come to many different conclusion on what is best for the nation on the topic of gay marriage before the 2015 court hearing legalizing it. From 1972 to now, from Baker v. Nelson to Obergefell v. Hodges, there have been dozens of court cases. My speech will be focusing on specifically Baker v. Nelson, Baehr v. Lewin, and Obergefell v. Hodges.

The Supreme Court’s ruling to allow same sex marriage has been a big change in this country and a huge victory for the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transexual) community. The ruling has changed millions of American’s lives and touched even more. In fact, my manager is a lesbian legally married and being around them, for even a short amount of time, makes it obvious how happy they are to be married.

In the past few years all 50 states have legalized same sex marriage. The problem is same sex marriage is still not widely accepted in this American society. When people are getting arrested because they refuse to do their job and give out gay marriage licences that means there is a problem with the way that same sex couples are being treated. Gay marriage is a major hot button issue in America right now. To allow marriage or to not allow marriage has evoked a large argument that has caused many riots and problems. Gay marriage is the right for two people of the same gender to marry. But what most people do not think about is the benefits of marriage to this community of people. Society should work harder on accepting same sex marriage because it is not just about being happy (but that is a benefit), but it is a matter of decisions over life or death, money, and the life of children.

Many people (religious conservatives) believe that same-sex marriage is immoral, sinful, and threatens the traditional structure of a family. In the United States, there is social unrest regarding the government's denial of the right to marry for homosexuals. Plenty of conservatives are completely against gay marriage; and many of liberals are fighting for equal treatment. The neo-Christian politicians are using religious arguments to establish that homosexuality is an abomination. On June 26th, 2015, the US Supreme Court decided that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry in all 50 US states. This means all US states must allow gay and lesbian couples to have a marriage license and recognize marriages that have taken place in other states. This decision is a significant victory for gay rights activists who have fought for years in the lower courts. Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia already recognized marriage equality. The remaining 13 states ban these unions, even as public support has reached record levels nationwide. The LGBT community has made a lot of progress over the years, and there is still more to come. Now that gay marriage is legalized it has not only made a huge impact on gay culture, but also on society.

Same sex- marriage is still the topic of many peoples conversation across the country. Citizens, divided by politic party, are very passionate about how they feel about it. The president didn’t approve of it at first, but now he finally accepts same- sex marriage, the Judicial System uses its power to dictate to the States, forcing them to accept same- sex marriage.
