A Rash Choice A boy is enjoying himself in a party over the weekend. As he comes to get a drink, another boy approaches him, promising a fun experience if he inhales some smoke from a ‘popper’. He has heard the warnings of his parents to not trust strangers, but this friend of his would never dare to harm him in any way. Also, it was only a whiff, and he knew that if you only do a drug once, you won’t have any long-term effects. His friend promised him nothing would go wrong. Not knowing what would happen next, the boy took the ‘popper’, and cracked it open, inhaling the rich smoke coming out of it, and slipped into a dazed, lethargic state. After simply being banished, Romeo seeks to take his life, without realizing that he is in a better situation than others (including his dead friend, Mercutio). Not understanding how his life will impact others, he makes the decision to die. Eventually, the Friar, an adult figure with a developed mind, steps in and uses reason, which Romeo lacks. Not only does Romeo act in such a manner, but Juliet also shares the same characteristic. After meeting Romeo at the Capulet’s party, knowing him for about 1 minute, Juliet kisses him, and they seek marriage. This is despite her saying later on that ”Although I joy in thee, / I have no joy of this contract tonight. / It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden” (Shakespeare II.ii 116-118). As Juliet is still a teenager, however, her animal instincts get the best of her, and they get married the next day. Through this, it is shown that while teenagers may know how to deal with things rationally (like Juliet’s little blurb on how she shouldn’t marry), their undeveloped minds get the better of them, and they go with their natural flow. While the theme of teenage impulsivity is relevant during the 1600’s, science and statistics prove that this theme is ever-present to this day. For example, in an article concentrated specifically on the irrationality of teenage boys, when referring to the changing brain of an adolescent, the writer
He jumps right in, and tells Balthasar to get the horses ready at once. Romeo and Juliet’s lack of maturity also causes them to love one another without a limit. They are too immature to realize that the feeling of love should not conquer common sense and reasoning. They love each other too such an extreme, that they are inseparable; and once separated, they are willing to go up to any extent to be loyal to each other and their love. This idea is strongly emphasized when Juliet is willing to kill herself rather than marry Paris which proves that she is loyal to her love. Romeo, in return, kills himself after he sees Juliet dead, which shows that he too is loyal to his love. Romeo and Juliet are both young and immature when they fall in love with each other, and their immaturity results in them not understanding that love has its limits. The young lovers love to an extreme neglecting love’s limits, which leads to them not taking mature decisions and steps, but rather rashly and abruptly on impulse to honor their love for each other. Romeo and Juliet feel such a burden to honor their love for each other that they end up committing suicide.
It is while growing up that children and teens are most vulnerable. Because they lack life experience, foresight, and the ability to think clearly, young people often make decisions that are unwise and even downright harmful to them or others. This lack of maturity and its consequences is demonstrated in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where teens’ poor decisions lead to the deaths of many. The play’s tragic end is not the result of deliberate malicious actions, but rather the consequence of the emotional, untamed impulsivity of the play’s younger characters. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the reader experiences how the impulsive nature of the youth results in them making poor decisions that can end in tragedy.
Love is a blinding powerful spell that makes others act helplessly without studying all of the options can result in an impulsive decision. Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare tells a story about two households, Capulets and Montagues, who are enemies. Their two children, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Being blinded by love, Romeo and Juliet don’t think straight. Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet are blinded by their love and make impulsive life threatening decisions. Throughout the play there are many moments that demonstrate that love is a spell as Romeo and Juliet fall for eachother.
In order to understand Romeo and Juliet, it must be remembered that these two heralds of love were little more than children. In Renaissance England, the category of adolescence was not recognized (Cox 391). A person went from childhood to adulthood without the liberty that is allowed to modern adolescents. Nowadays, the teenage years are accepted as a turbulent period in which defiance of authority and assertion of "self" are not only allowed, but also expected. Adults explain away even the most inexplicable behavior of teenagers as "just a phase". However, as this was not done in Shakespeare’s England, both Romeo and Juliet were expected to take on the roles of adults, and were chastised for their refusal to enter in the adult world as their parents would have them. Juliet is first presented to the audience as a young woman who has come to marrying age: “Well, think of marriage now; younger than you, / Here in Verona, ladies of esteem, / Are made already mothers…Thus then in brief: / The valiant Paris seeks you for his love”(1.3.69-74). Juliet is presented with the idea of marrying Paris with
“Juliet, however, is resolute in her decision to die rather than enter into a false marriage: "If all else fail, myself have power to die"(Shakespeare). This quote shows how young relationships are more powerful than elders. Romeo and Juliet show how strong young relationships really are. They ended many feuds and problems in their life because they don’t have to worry about anything. When you are young, you don’t have bills to pay, a family to take care of, and most of the time no job. Romeo and Juliet has nothing to worry about because they are young and free. This means their life is easy and stress free, and elder relationships struggle sometimes because they go in debt, care about themselves more than the other person, and they get tired of eachother. Friar Lawrence
Early in the play, Romeo and Juliet meet and instantly fall in love. In the infamous balcony scene, they clearly express their love and decide to get married. Juliet says, “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bend of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, By one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite, And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay And follow thee my lord throughout the world,” (2.2.149-155). Juliet has confirmed that she wants to marry Romeo the next day so long as he gives her a notice the next day. Romeo and Juliet are so in love that they are willing to rush into this marriage, not truly thinking of what is about to come next. They don’t stop to think about what this marriage will mean for the rivalry between the families and they don’t understand that maybe it isn’t a good idea. If Romeo and Juliet had considered the trouble that this marriage would cause, perhaps they would not have gotten married so quickly. Later, once Romeo has been banished to Mantua and Juliet is told she must marry another guy named Paris, she is distraught and runs to Friar Lawrence. Once there, Friar tells Juliet of a plan that involves her faking her death using a concoction that will make her appear dead. Romeo will then find her and they will be reunited and live their lives together away from their feuding
As the story of Romeo and Juliet further progresses, Romeo’s true character becomes more and more apparent; he seems to act solely by impulse. Romeo acts moreso with his emotions, and sudden thoughts than his brain which stores reason and logic. This causes for tragedy and unfortunate circumstance by the end of the poem. This shows how impulsive he is in most of his decisions and how he tends to be very dramatic in everything that he does. When Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead, he almost immediately dramatically decides to drink poison, to kill himself. “Here’s to love, O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick - thus with a kiss I die.” Which shows how quickly he makes wrash and dramatic decisions without thinking it through. If Romeo had not been so careless and impulsive in his decision, Juliet would have awoken and they would both still be alive.
In Romeo and Juliet and in life, hasty decisions can heavily affect the outcome of the story and your life. In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, hasty decisions heavily affect the tragic outcome of the play. One of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet is a play about two star-crossed lovers who will go through anything to be with each other. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare reveals how hasty decisions can lead to catastrophe through events such as Romeo’s exile, Tybalt’s death, and the two star-crossed lover’s death.
Romeo could have chosen any girl to be with instantly, but instead he had to pick a Capulet, one of his family's enemies. His infatuation with the idea of love causes him to believe that he had true feelings for Juliet. However, his actions toward Juliet shows his obsessive and clingy personality. He was with Rosaline one day and the next with Juliet. He was so desperate to be with someone, he had to marry Juliet. Friar went along with the proposition and married the two of them. Romeo didn’t even think of what consequences they could have faced if they became married or how their families would feel of the situation. To be married at such a young age, Romeo cannot possibly handle all of the obstacles that hang in the future. When Romeo went to the Capulet ball uninvited, Tybalt felt offended and sent a letter challenging Romeo to a duel. Romeo was relaxed and tried to solve the argument words, but instead Tybalt insulted Romeo by calling him a villain. Instead riling him into a fight, Romeo responded with, “But love thee better than thou canst devise/...And so, good Capulet—which name I
Romeo and Juliet definitely believed that they were ready for much more than they were capable of handling. Now knowing when teen’s minds actually are developed we can see why Juliet made so many poor mistakes. One example of a poor choice by Juliet was actually agreeing to go along with the plan that Friar Lawrence concocted. ( Act 4. Scene 3. Line 58.) Another piece of evidence of being blind to love is when she falls for a young man, Romeo, that she has known for like a short amount of time. ( Act 1. Scene 5. Line 108.) The fact that Romeo’s brain was underdeveloped could show us why he was drawn to such a younger girl. Juliet’s mother tells us that she is only 13 when they were discussing the idea of marriage.(Act 1.Scene 3. line 13.) Juliet’s poor choices and the under developement of the teen brain shows the reader why teen love is futile and
The play Romeo & Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy and is written by the playwright William Shakespeare. The story describes the love of Romeo and Juliet, who are from the Montague and Capulet families respectively. Unfortunately, the Montague and Capulet families are in a family feud and completely despise one another. However, Romeo and Juliet are still determined to be with each other and decide to secretly marry with the help of Friar Lawrence and Juliet’s nurse. An unexpected street fight results in the banishment of Romeo from Verona, just hours after his wedding ceremony. Juliet is then suddenly forced by her parents to marry someone else by the name of Paris. At a loss of what to do, Juliet seeks the aid of Friar Lawrence, who develops an extremely detailed and risky plan in order to reunite her with Romeo in Mantua. Not everything goes according to this plan though, and the ending is a horrible catastrophe because of Romeo’s quick and rash actions. Therefore, hasty and reckless actions made based on one’s emotions can lead to tragedy.
Romeo and Juliet are both in their teenage years. Just like teenagers in other cultures, they are impulsive and have high hormones due to human nature. Romeo has proven that he experiences these things through his past love for Rosaline and how upset he got over her. Juliet has also shown these things while on the balcony expressing her love for Romeo. Their teenage side effects play into the quickness and extremity of their love through marriage and suicide at such a young age. Due to their impulsivity, they didn’t think ahead they just thought about what they were currently in need of and wanting.
Romeo Juliet Essay A couple has been happily married for 15 years. They were madly in love. Unfortunately, one of them dies in an accident.
However, their “love” leads them into new problems.Which resulted them into making rash decisions. They could’ve easily avoided these conflicts, by talking to their parents about their marriage, but that is not what they decided to do. Romeo and Juliet’s decisions are never well thought out at all, since all their decisions lead to suicide threats. In addition, both of them are very self-centered becuase, it never occured to them that if they died it could effect other peoples lives terribly. William Shakespeare is showing us, how their decisions will affect themselves in the future. He demonstrates that love should be taken slowly and peacefully. But in Romeo and Juliet’s case love is very fast and unpleasant. William Shakespeare states that, “ As if that name, shot from the deadly level of a gun, Did murder her, as that names cursed hand Murder'd her kinsman. O, tell me Friar, tell me, In what vile part of this anatomy Doth my name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack The hateful mansion” (A.3 s.3 l.102-108). Romeo is very upset in himself because he believes that Juliet is heartbroken, that he had just killed her cousin, Tybalt. Therefore, he threatened Friar Lawrence, suicide by drawing his dagger. This indicates how Shakespeare describes young love as misleading, because Romeo is very impulsive. He is not thinking this through with Friar Lawrence at all. Instead, he
During adolescence, teenagers want to become independent and often times do not tell their parents where they are off to in the evening. They leave their parents in the dust, who await their arrival in the night if it is past curfew. Teenagers make irresponsible decisions because their pre-frontal cortex is not fully developed. Neuroscientists have determined that the orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate cortex in our brains regulates our choices (Nauert, 2011).
