I have, and always will be, been a strange kid; a lonely kid. I have been interested in things the other kids made fun of me for. I was (and am) in drama, band, and loved dissecting in my elementary G.A.T.E. class. Things were not always how they seemed though. One day after losing someone very close to me I was in my closet reveling in the dark as a way to calm my anxiety, and a thought had struck me. “Why is it that I have to change? Why can’t I follow my heart?” These questions are one of the main themes of Romanticism. Romanticism is a movement in the arts and literature that originated in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual. Though the literary period for Romanticism is over, its themes and ideas are very much alive in this modern world. Romanticism in the literary family is the “moody teenager”. The themes of this literary period include: “Revolution, democracy, and republicanism, The Sublime and Transcendence, The power of the imagination, genius, and the source of inspiration, Proto-psychology and extreme mental states, and Nature and the Natural.” (Romantic Notes) The authors of these literary tales believed logic, reason, and religion did not matter; that you should follow your heart no matter what consequences may follow. “I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others.” (The Black Cat) Like most stories, an element of Romanticism is taking the readers on a
