Why Rodeo is Not Animal Abuse. Rodeo is and has been a major part of Texas History. Some people may say that the bucking events danger or injure the rough stock. But that’s not the case. They’re called rough stock for a reason. The rough stock they use in rodeos are actually very well taken care of and are only used when needed. When they are not being used in rodeo they are sitting in a pasture. This sport arose in the west out of the cattle industry. The Range Cowboys had great skills that after some time led to rodeo events. Rodeo is now a professional sport for many men and women. Rodeo is being continued by many Youth Rodeo Associations. In time, rodeos in the area started happening yearly. I’d say rodeo is a pretty competitive sport. …show more content…
have more than likely never seen that animal before. The bronc or bull has a leather strap wrapped around its flank to make it buck. The flank is the part of the horse or bull right in front of its back legs. The bucking straps do not hurt the animal. The strap does not rub or cut the animal. People that are against rodeos try to make rodeo sound really bad and abusive. The say that the bucking straps, hotshots and spurs “are used to hurt the animal and aggravate him to reacting more roughly than he would naturally.” (Rodeo Facts: The Case Against Rodeos). I guess they don’t understand that these animals are trained to do this and perform these events. Spurs are straps with a dull, round, metal piece that wraps around the heel of a cowboys boot. They simply tap the bull or bronc with the metal part to give it a little spunk. They do not have pointed edges so it is not possible to cut or stab the animal. Calf roping is simple. They rope the calf and tie their legs together. The contestants who do this do slam the calf on its back. But it doesn’t hurt him. The calves are used to it. They can still breathe and hardly suffer. In Steer wrestling the contestant hold on to the steers head and tried to get him on him back. By doing this they slightly twist their neck and the animal falls. Those anti-rodeo people say that they suffer broken necks and sprains when actually they don’t. Steers are very …show more content…
They stay in a pasture with the other just living. The only time they leave that pasture is when they are being trained or when they are being used in rodeo. Yes, they do travel some but it’s not like they go three days without food or water, they driver usually pulls over somewhere and will feed and water them. If you ask me, they have it pretty good. The rough stock seem to love their job. They know that this is what they were born to do and what they will continue to do for the rest of their
In the event that this was done to a puppy or cat, the wrongdoer would be charged and likely imprisoned. Yet, in the realm of rodeo it's "entertainment." (Kobliska) Similarly as with calf roping, steer tripping puts a rodeo creature in incredible danger of damage or demise. Steers weighing roughly 700 pounds are forced to keep running at top speed while the roper tosses the rope around the cow's horns. The roper then flips the rope over the right half of the cow, while turning his steed to one side.
There is not an author. Since there is no author i can not answer this question. I can tell that this source is well written and ready to argue the position against the issue because they have a lot of good information about the argumentative issue. This source is found on a website that is called Shark Online. The intended readers are more for the rodeo people. The people that think rodeo is and isn’t abuse. The position being argued here is that rodeo is abusive to the animals because they claim that when people are doing the events that they hurt the animal. For example, they say that when cowboys are calf roping or doing break away the are saying that they rope tightens and stays tighten. That is not true what so ever, yes the rope tightens for a couple seconds then it releases then the calf is let go. The rope is not tight enough where the calf can’t breathe.
It’s also my favorite sport in rodeo. There are two judges who give 1-25 to the cowboys\cowgirls performance and 1-25 to the animal’s performance, 100 points being the highest all together would also be counted as a perfect ride. To ride the cowboys, use a bull rope and a rosin. The bull rope is a thickly braided rope with a cowbell attached to the end. The cowbell is used for like a weight so the rope can safely fall off after the ride is over. But bull riding has taken a professional turn towards the bright and shows no sign of slowing
“We all ride for the same purpose, to win, but its those that ride with their heart and soul and leave everything in the arena that truly win in the end, no matter the outcome of the final placing.” Its not the person on the horse’s back, or the cowboy on a bodacious bull, that wins. It’s the horse and the bull themselves that are the champions. There are misconceptions when it comes to the sport of rodeo. Despite what PETA and animal activists think, rodeo is the way of life for some people and nothing can change that. We take pride in our animals, the livestock we use, and wouldn’t dream on attentionally mistreating these wonderful creatures.
Horses running, bulls bucking, and flame throwing are all things that you could see at a rodeo. When I was in the fifth grade I went to a rodeo with my girl scout troup . We saved up for almost a whole year. We sold cookies, earned money, and waited for the exciting weekend trip to A.J Ranch.

Rodeo has been around for several decades and has gradually become very popular around the world. The three events that have been apart of the rodeo since the beginning include saddle bronc, steer roping, and bull riding. Rodeo is a great sport for cowboys and cowgirls to compete in an event that suits their lifestyle. These contests have changed dramatically since the first official rodeo in the late 1800’s. Because the rodeo event was created in 1888, ranchers culture has been brought to the world and created into a world wide sport.
Lane won his first rodeo at the little buckaroos rodeo in Utah. He was also the National high school rodeo runner up in.1980. Riding bulls wasn’t just something to do for Lane it was a way of life. Lane became of full member of the PRCA(Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) in 1983. He was never a member of the PBR. . He won world champion at the age of 24 and rode red rock for the challenge of the champions. Lane rode red rock 4 out of 7 times and he was the only person to ever ride him for a full 8 seconds. In 1980, at a national high school Lane meet two people he would know forever Kellie Kyle and Tuff Hedeman.
Rodeo is popular throughout the United States and is the official state sport for South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, and Idaho. People think we are just entertaining the people and think the animals are physically provoked to make the cowboys look more impressive (Nielsen 1). Really that isn’t true its really how good of a hand you are and how well and experienced you are riding an animal. Some people make their horses hard in the mouth pulling back to much and that isn’t a good hand on a horse. A good hand on a horse has their horses mouth super light so with a little touch of the foot and rein your horse will turn a complete circle without pulling hard.
Bull riding has a long rich history, it can be traced back all the way to the early 1800’s. Cowboys would get together and have contests in things they normally do on a ranch like roping and trying to break horses, but you didn’t have to get on the back of a
Rodeos have been around since the day of the cowboy, they are often times credited for having Americas true cowboys. They include great display of athleticism between a cowboy or cowgirl, and the animals. Many rodeo events today, such as calf roping, are traditional farm and ranch practices. Some rodeo viewers don’t approve of what they see. Some people believe rodeos are too rough on the animals and that the animals are mistreated behind closed doors. Dr. James Furman (Beef Magazine), a professional rodeo animal practitioner, says that rodeos have strict animal policies. Cowboys will be disqualified, and often times fined for the mistreatment of animals. (Beef Magazine). Dr. Furman admits, "The rodeos do look tough on the animals, but ranchers take extensive procedures to make sure their cattle are in good health. If the rodeos truly did help the animals, would ranchers put their cattle in them." Furman also likes to add "Livestock
The sport of Rodeo has been a tradition in the United States since the cowboys of the American West began pushing herds of cattle across this country. Often, there was very little to do besides hard work with the cattle and horses, so the cowhands would often get together and compete with each other in the skills that they practiced every day on their jobs in order to relieve boredom. The first competitions in rodeo consisted mainly of riding bucking horses and roping steers, cows and calves, because this was what their work consisted of. Each ranch would send their best cowboys they had. The cowboys were competing only for the honor of their ranches they worked for, and their bosses who owned those
Rodeo is usually considered to be associated with southern sports and not really publicized as some of the other major collegiate sports.
It takes hard work, passion and a lot of money to be successful in the sport of rodeo. There is a lot of travel. In order to get paid, you have to win. In order to participate, you have to pay an entry fee. In order to stay in the game you have to keep healthy. Any rodeo cowboy will tell you the odds are against you and still once you have decided, there is no other kind of life. The few minutes that fans get to witness with the cowboy in the arena are a very small part of what needs to be done.
Rodeoing will take you places that you have never been before and it will give you the opportunity to meet a bunch of new people. When i first started rodeoing it was hard for me to just go out and meet people because i didn’t really know anything about them and it took me a while to get the courage and go introduce myself and make new friends. After a few years of rodeoing i wouldn’t have to go introduce myself because people would come up to me and ask who i was because i was doing so good in all my events. Most people are rude at first but once you get to know them and hang out with them, you finally start to see the nice side of them.
