Why Rodeo is Not Animal Abuse. Rodeo is and has been a major part of Texas History. Some people may say that the bucking events danger or injure the rough stock. But that’s not the case. They’re called rough stock for a reason. The rough stock they use in rodeos are actually very well taken care of and are only used when needed. When they are not being used in rodeo they are sitting in a pasture. This sport arose in the west out of the cattle industry. The Range Cowboys had great skills that after some time led to rodeo events. Rodeo is now a professional sport for many men and women. Rodeo is being continued by many Youth Rodeo Associations. The flank is the part of the horse or bull right in front of its back legs. The bucking straps do not hurt the animal. The strap does not rub or cut the animal. People that are against rodeos try to make rodeo sound really bad and abusive. The say that the bucking straps, hotshots and spurs “are used to hurt the animal and aggravate him to reacting more roughly than he would naturally.” (Rodeo Facts: The Case Against Rodeos). I guess they don’t understand that these animals are trained to do this and perform these events. Spurs are straps with a dull, round, metal piece that wraps around the heel of a cowboys boot. They simply tap the bull or bronc with the metal part to give it a little spunk. They do not have pointed edges so it is not possible to cut or stab the animal. Calf roping is simple. They rope the calf and tie their legs together. The contestants who do this do slam the calf on its back. But it doesn’t hurt him. The calves are used to it. They can still breathe and hardly suffer. In Steer wrestling the contestant hold on to the steers head and tried to get him on him back. By doing this they slightly twist their neck and the animal falls. They stay in a pasture with the other just living. The only time they leave that pasture is when they are being trained or when they are being used in rodeo. Yes, they do travel some but it’s not like they go three days without food or water, they driver usually pulls over somewhere and will feed and water them. If you ask me, they have it pretty good.
