Written Final- Spring 2016- Elena Drefs We see risk taking being defined as exposure to the chance or injury of loss; a hazard of dangerous chance. But what if there was another way of redefining risk taking? What must one overcome to be able to define their own accomplishments and or failure as taking risks in their lives? In the collection of unit 5 of the Close Reader by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, we as a class clearly got to understand the importance of risk taking and how risks can affect one's life in the decisions they choose to make. The stories of Beowulf, Blackheart, and lastly Are Genetically Modified Foods Scary? a perfect example of what the cause and effects are for risk taking. The importance of …show more content…
Emily is willing to risk the safety of her life to spend time with Blackheart. She is aware of the danger he (Black Heart) is capable of bringing to the unwanted people ( thieves) in his territory that he guards at night. She wants to know him without the bars between them. The denotation of bars is to prevent or forbid the entrance or movement of something. While the connotation is negative because the word bars is shown as a barrier preventing her from further contact with Black Heart. “The day she touched Black Heart, the air was a white mist. She couldn’t see her feet. But she knew the path to his cage as if it were illuminated. When she stood before it, she couldn’t see him; she could only hear his terrible bark.” (lines 181-183) Emily sees this connection between herself and Black Heart. Having moved to a new foreign country with a new foreign language to learn, also the lack of parenting her mother shows for her leaves Emily feeling quite alone. She in a way like Black Heart feels mistreated with the lack of needed attention. With the feeling of having nothing to lose, Emily shows courage in facing the dog. This risk-taking shows how someone who feels lost can sometimes see hope in something. Emily shows hope for a greater outcome with facing Black Heart. “...most days, her mother and Ed drive off into the Uca valley..” (lines 22-23) What this reveals is that Emily is often left feeling alone and left behind while her mother is out and about exploring with Ed. As I mentioned before, she seeks companionship as a way to fill in the gap of the lost relationship she has with her
Risk for most people is an accepted part of everyday life e.g. catching a bus or walking to the shop etc... will carry some element of risk. Risk is associated with our health, safety, security, well being, employment, education, daily activities, using resources and equipment and community participation. Some adults such as those who are disabled or who are older are usually discouraged from taking risks with their budgeting, planning, employment and their daily living skills usually because people fear for their limitations or that they might hurt themselves or others. Everyone has the right to take risks and make
Without a certain amount of risk taking nothing could be achieved, this is because even the food that we consume on a daily basis could have a negative impact on our lives. The opposite side to this are the benefits that come from taking little risks every day, these may include how we get to work in the morning, what we choose to take part in within an activity or even how hot we like our bath water. If no risks where taken the general population would not leave their bed for fear of something bad happening, if small risks are taken there is the possibility
Accepting the opportunity to experience risk allows the individual to push themselves, despite the possibility of danger towards oneself. In the Hobbit, the character Bilbo demonstrates risk-taking most clearly when he attempts to steal a troll’s wallet after the dwarves ordered him to investigate a strange light coming from within the forest (pg. 35). Bilbo concludes that he must prove himself to the dwarves. To show his capability as a burglar,
Risk is defined by the probability of injury, harm, loss or danger. We all take risks every day, and don’t even think about implications.
Anybody who takes a full role in society takes risks: crossing the road, using a bus, driving a car, and talking to people they do not know. Risk may be physical (injury and accident), emotional (humiliation, sense of failure), or mental (stress).
Risk Taking: Teachers promote trying new things and introduce students to new ideas and activities. Students are encouraged to take risks and gain a higher level of thinking.
Things will always be unknown unless we take risks. In Beowulf, our epic hero Beowulf takes a risk by helping out the Danes and killing the ferocious beast, Grendel. Another example of someone taking risks was when President Reagan stated that he encourages NASA to continue to attempt to send astronauts to space after The Challenger incident. Lastly, Oxitec took a risk when they made genetically modified mosquitoes. People take risks because they believe that the outcome will be extraordinary.
As a teenager I think that taking risk and making decisions that we don't fully think about or don't think in the consequence is in our genetics and its part of our culture and society and it has and it will always be. In "Into the wild" by Jon krakauer Chris McCandless makes very risk decisions in his teenage years that affected his life in a good way or bad but that wasn't he wasn't thinking about when he made like us but his decision were much larger than any that I have made.
Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one’s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks.
Risks make life worth living, they can cause people to make the right decision, as well as the wrong. In my opinion, risks are a part of everyday life and everyone takes them. In “A Boy and a Man,” from the book Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey, and “Risks” by Janet Rand, each passage is trying to teach the importance of taking risks. In “A Boy and a Man,” a young boy named Rudi Matt goes climbing and finds a famous mountain climber stuck in a crevasse. Rudi decides to stay and help the man get out of the crevasse. In “Risks,” is teaches the importance of taking risks and how they will help you through life. It also shows how not taking risks will make your life harder. Risks are usually taken to chose a point, to show somebody that you care or you are good enough to whatever it is you are risking. Both, passages share a common theme of risks being a part of life.
* There are three (3) schools of thought regarding risk. The first considers the positive and negative aspects of risk, but sees them as separate. The second group believes that there are benefits from treating threats and opportunities together, while the third school does not label uncertainties, but addresses uncertainty as part of “doing the job.” Argue the value of having a risk strategy despite the cost associated with it. The topic of this article is the risk biases of the college student population with respect to gender. Phycology has found that “some people take all kinds of risks, whilst others focus more on safely steering clear of them.” (changing minds). This idea is called risk bias and explains why some people are risk seeking and others are risk avoiding. This article hopes to clarify and possibly answer the two questions. Firstly, this study will inquiry the following: Do women appear more risk adverse than men in the college atmosphere? The psychology of risk bias itself is a complex subject which has many factors requiring consideration while analyzing. These factors include some of the following: genetics, metal stability, and perceived power of the risk taker. Genetics has been an advancing field which has seen great progress in recent decades. Scientist have been able to map the human genome and analyze each part of DNA. Scientist have found “being a risk taker has been linked to a certain DNA change in the DRD4” (the tech.org). Genetics being a factor is risk-related behaviors, such as smoking, is one example of how complex and varied topics the study of risk bias covers. The hopes of this article is to determine if gender is yet another factor in the lengthy list of factors in risk bias. The second question is what underlying reasons exist to explain this phenomena of different risk behavior, or lack thereof, in gender? This study focuses not only
Taking risks is a thing that every moment of your life you use. You have to take important decisions in order to achieve what you want or improve what you are doing wrong. Taking risks help you learn from your mistakes and provides you information on what or how to do things next time.
When you look up the word risk in the dictionary it says “a situation involving exposure to danger.” Next when you look up the word consequence it says “a result or effect of an action or condition.” So when you take a risk, in return a consequence is received. Now depending on the risk you take, the choice will result in the consequence being good or bad. What is a risk worth taking? By the end of the paper I hope to provide a definition for an acceptable risk that would make you think about what an acceptable risk is for you.
In Conclusion Is it better to take risks and perhaps make some mistakes or remain cautious and risk nothing? Well, it’s good to take risks because it helps people sometimes it benefits you and it makes you feel like a hero sometimes like when you risk your life for the president, people will remember you as a hero. Maybe some people take risk to do bad
