The Revolutionary War was the colonial struggle for freedom, liberty and independence. There were growing tensions between the colonial militia and the British military after the French and Indian War, which would intensify as a result of strict British legislation. Strict British legislation and unreasonably high taxes led to rebellion and boycotting British goods. The French and Indian war, British legislation and taxation and the ideologies of the Enlightenment altered the American perceptions of Britain, and contributed to the beginning of the Revolutionary War. In order for the British to make money, they decided to raise taxes on the colonies and this angered them. The British placed unfair taxes on every day goods like sugar and in order to fight the British, the colonists boycotted the sugar. The Quartering Act was placed on the colonists and British soldiers were to stay in a colonist’s home and the family would provide for the soldier and ended up spending more money on British goods. The colonists thought this was unfair but they could not refuse, they had no choice. The colonists decided to rebel in little ways like not buy enough provisions for the soldiers but the soldiers soon caught on and there were stricter rules put in place. The soldiers were there mostly to keep an eye on the rebels and were sent to homes of colonists that were suspected to be rebellious. Another harsh act placed but led to a success for the colonies was the Tea Act. The East India Tea company was doing poor and colonists were angered that the Tea they were smuggling was more expensive. The colonists wanted to send a message to the British that they were not going to be pushed around so they threw the Tea overboard the ship and the British were furious. As punishment for the Tea Party, all harbors were blocked and monitored by the British until all the damages were paid for. The Intolerable Acts were put in place to punish what Boston and Massachusetts had done in the Tea Party. This act limited town meetings so no rebellions like the Tea Party could occur again, suspended the court, added new provisions to the Quartering Act and a new British Governor was appointed to control British troops in America. The reason the colonists were so angry with the British was because of the high taxes and unreasonable legislation. The colonists’ slogan they had to explain their cause was “No taxation with out representation” meaning
