Revenge Motif In Hamlet

In Shakespeare's play “Hamlet”, the recurring motif of revenge is repeated throughout the entire play. The motif gives the characters a reason to exist. The concept also conveys the idea that revenge does not end with any rewards in its accomplishment. In the exposition of the play, the main character, Prince Hamlet, is seen to have his purpose in life when his father, the former king, died and his uncle, Claudius, ascended to the throne by marrying his mother. During the rising action, this is restored once Hamlet speaks to his father’s ghost and is told how the former king died by the treachery of his own brother to gain possession of the throne.
