Unit 22 – Research Methodology
P1 – Explain the function of research in health and social care
In this assignment I will be explaining what research is, the roles of research and the purpose of research. I will also include examples to show my understanding of research.
‘Research is a diligent and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject I order to discover or revise facts, theories and applications etc.: recent research in medicine’ (www.dictionary.com).
Research can be used in many methods, for example: questionnaires, television, leaflets, books etc. it allows us to keep up to date on the new findings or discoveries e.g. a new type of cancer or a new vaccination. Research is the investigation into

Health problems can include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis A, B and C.
Research to plan provision
Plan can be defined as a design or scheme of arrangement: an elaborate plan for seating guests, (www.dictionary.com).
This type of research is carried out to find out what services are available for those individuals who need them. Research lacks value if its findings are not put into practice and it is important that, having identified any kind of need or gap in provision, attempts are made to fill the gaps so that the individuals in this country can receive the best quality health and social care to which they are entitled to. However some groups may be overlooked in society, (Talman, 2010). An example of research to plan provision can be as I said before drug users. More promotion of being anti-drug and more rehab clinics and programmes could be made available to help this group of people and to improve access to care for such groups.
I will now be explaining the five roles of research and giving an example for each one of the roles. The five roles of research include: research to inform policy or practice, research to extend knowledge and understanding, research to improve practice, research to aid reflection and allow progress to be monitored and finally research to examine topics of contemporary importance.
Research to inform policy or practice
Inform can be defined as to give or impart
WHAT IS RESEARCH? It is a planned process whereby information is collected for a specific purpose, analysed and reported.
Research is vital in understanding why certain theories are conceived. Essentially, through research I am studying human life and more so studying human
According to Depoy and Gittin, research is a way individuals think about problems in systematic way. Research is generally described as description, exploration, analysis, prediction and problem solving. There are different types of research and these researches are called the experiments, quasi-experiments and non-experiments. The purpose of research is to provide the insight to practice, it also enhance individuals understanding as well as developing new approaches with different topics, get to test your research for effectiveness. Understanding research is important because it helps to build individuals knowledge bases and informs decision making in practice. Research also enable us to make sure that our practice are up to date with relevant information.
The third resource that I used is from the Office of Justice Programs/Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). A specific article titled “Intimate Partner Violence in the United States” shows a graph of intimate partner violence rates declining from 1993 to 2006. The article is quite vague, with no real description or stats stating whether or not men commit more violence against women than women do against men. “Violence between intimates is difficult to measure because it often occurs in private, and victims are often reluctant to report incidents to anyone because of shame or fear of reprisal” (S. Catalano).
This assignment will be explaining the function of research within health and social care. Research is information which is gathered together for a specific purpose. The function of research includes many different functions and they all have different purposes. The functions of research are; Identifying needs, highlighting gaps in provision, planning provision of services, information policy and practice, extending knowledge and understanding, aiding reflection, allowing progress to be monitored, and examining topics of contemporary importance.
When you think about research, it could be thought of as a process. A process can be defined as a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end. The process in research is important because research takes time and consideration. As you conduct research, you may gain a deeper insight that could be gained gradually and modifications can be made or changed over time (Ghauri and Gronhaug, 2010). When you are doing research it is a good idea to look at it from the perspective that it is a
Research allows us to better understand what is unknown, how a human thinks, why a dog barks when they hear a stranger approaching or that the earth is round and not flat. Research allows us to find answers to the questions we have. Research attempts to both understand and define. There are three kinds of research; Explanatory; Exploratory and Descriptive research. Explanatory, Exploratory and Descriptive research define what research is; Research is the attempt to explain, explore and describe (Neuman, 2006, 24).
The famous German physicist Albert Einstein once said, “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” Often in the classroom and life in general, many people assume that in order to research something, a person must first understand it, but that simply is not the case. The whole concept of research stems from human’s natural response to the unknown and the desire to understand it; almost all humans have used research to comprehend and attempt to solve problems. Personally, I have used research a great deal for personal and educational reasons. In high school, I used research for historical and literary papers, in order to better understand concepts, and to discover resources for almost every class. I also
o Conceptual model or theoretical framework: In what way was a conceptual model or theoretical framework used to guide this study?
Research allows us to develop and refine our theories and to continue making new breakthroughs
What I have learned about research at an introductory level is that research is finding out about things we do not
Quantitative and Qualitative are said to be systematic in different design. Both design have to follow a process system that involved defining a principle of research.
Research is a form of systematic inquiry. It sets out to answer questions through assessing, summarizing and drawing conclusions from what are often very large amounts of information.
What I have learned about research is that it is a process, a scientific process that psychologist and scientist develop that includes many different approaches and that is carefully peer reviewed and evaluated. There is what is called the Scientific Approach where scientist have an idea or theory and based on their observation will either support the theory or the theory can be falsified by their peers. Data also goes through a review period before it is published in a scientific journal by scientist who have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate it.
Research is the careful search or inquiry for new facts by scientific study of a subject, through a course of critical investigation. By studying animals we can learn new things about their behaviour and lifestyle. The Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice (SSSMZP) encourage zoos to carry out research. Research can be carried out ex situ or in situ.
