In the 16th century, women were looked upon as a gender that should stay in the house and work, not have power and rule over a country. Discussing the govern of Queens during the 16th century, such as Mary Tudor, Lady Jane Grey, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I, allowed prejudices to be lessened but never completely be erased. No matter how these four notable ladies came into power, the accomplishments they overcame, achieved and wrote about proved to be great and substantial in making history as it is written today.

It sprouted from the Dark Ages and led to the modern era. During the Renaissance, the Europeans began to adopt a new way of thinking that included the increasing presence of art and the idea of individualism, the decline in the significance of the Church, and the arising of the importance of education. Humanism, or the idea that men needed to educate themselves to be the best humans, was one of the reasons for these changes. They started going to schools and expressing themselves artistically, these new actions brought about the belief that men were superior. The assumed role of men during the Renaissance was to be dominant. They were to fight in battles and wars, hold a position for office, and do honor to their family name. In comparison, the roles of women were drastically different, they were submissive. It was thought that women should obey her husband and father, bear children, and not be educated, as many men were.

The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others. Also, in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged to strive for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however, was more focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one does. During this era, people strived to become all-sided men, also known as; renaissance men. This means they are not only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math, science, and literature. The Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the Middle Ages and began a new era.

The Renaissance man can be thought of as a man who lived during the period of Renaissance who had knowledge of and was interested in wide branches of knowledge. With the above given definitions it is not hard to see why Leonardo Da Vince personified the ideal of the Renaissance man. He was a brilliant inventor, mathematician scientist and perhaps one of the best artists that have ever lived. Looking at the life such a brilliant actor it is difficult to imagine if someone today could ever match his achievements but I think it is possible.

Back then it was rare to see a female artist, writer, patron, humanist, etc. Unfortunately everything was largely based on gender, women couldn’t get an education or have certain jobs. Even when the Renaissance commenced there was very little change for women in the beginning, that is until Isabella D’Este came along. Isabella D’Este the oldest of six children who was born into the powerful ruling family in Ferrara, Italy was a patron of the Renaissance arts, a well educated and powerful political figure, and humanitarian. Isabella was an extremely influential person having been connected to almost every ruler in Italy whether by marriage or birth. D’Este had a great interest for the arts, supporting artists such as Titian, Da Vinci, and Mantegna. Yet she did not lack a breadth or depth of knowledge, by the age of sixteen D’Este could read, write, and translate both Greek and Latin, had a variety of musical talents, and had a knick for intellectual debates. This supported the idea one must know and master all subjects. Isabella D’Este is truly a marvelous example of a Renaissance women.

Although, each part of Europe was subjected to different changes, there were two primary renaissances, which were most notable. They were the Italian and the Northern renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo and Rubens critiqued the artists in their age in order to see who among them can create perfection, or reach true mastery in art. This time period was a “gateway” to the modern world and was essential for the improvement of human life. At the time there were two main Renaissances, the Northern, and the Italian.
