Reflection On City Council Meeting

INTRODUCTION One way to see public administration in action is by attending a city council meeting, whether it be in an urban or rural area, public administration still has a part in each event. As Kettl (2018; p. 244) referenced in his book, there is not a civil system that would be sustainable without strong leadership. This paper will discuss the author’s description, observation, and reflection during a city council meeting.
DESCRIPTION
On Monday, October 23, 2017 the author attended Bellevue, Nebraska’s city council meeting. The meeting was called to order right at 6:00 p.m. which ensured all citizens were in their seats. The presenters reply was after they have finished fundraising for the project which they were hoping would be the ground breaking would be Spring 2018 (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017). A second concern the council expressed was parking. The presenters mentioned having four off-street parking spaces, with a handicap included (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017). However, the council’s concern was that if there was a bigger function at the park the residents living near the park may experience frustration with a large amount of people parking near their homes. The next concern was met with an abundance of conversation. One of the city council members pointed out that in the project layout during the presentation, there was a lack of sidewalks. This was an important issue in order for people to walk on the sidewalk instead of in the grass. Another city council member noted that would be another fundraising project due to the high expense of adding a sidewalk next to the street as well as addition off-street parking (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017). This city council member also stated that they would need to be cautious when asking the public sector to come up with the funds (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017).
