The development of characters and theme Redemption is the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment or clearing a debt. Redemption was a major theme in the novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Redemption was a main theme in the book; this theme is exemplified by Amir, Baba, and Soraya and who they turn out to be by the end of the novel. The development of Baba’s character was greatly affected by his own redemption, which helps develop the theme in the novel. “The signs had been there for me to see all along… Baba hiring Dr. Kumar to fix Hassan’s harelip. Baba never missing Hassan’s birthday…” (Hossein 197). Baba had an affair with Ali’s wife, who was Hassan’s mother. That was an unspeakable deed Baba did, to make up for his wrong he would try to treat Hassan very well almost like a son, without showing that he was the father to Hassan. Baba would always treat Hassan and Amir equal when it came to his buying them the same things, there was another sign he was trying to make up for stealing Hassan from Ali. “... “I envied her. Her secret was out. Spoken. Dealt with… I suspected there were many ways in which Soraya Taheri was a better person than me” (Hosseini 165). Soraya admitting she sinned was her first step to redemption, telling Amir that she did something wrong and was not proud of it. “Amir, he’s your qaom, your family, so he’s my qaom too” (Hosseini 326). Soraya’s second step to redeeming herself was she asked Baba to move in with her and Amir after the wedding. She did not want to leave Baba, making up for her sin.
