Reconstruction, meaning to rebuild, was a desperate time for the South. Every little thing that they owned was completely destroyed. It all started with the Civil War or also called “The War Between States”. The South wanted to gain control over the government to get rid of laws that they did not support. However, when the North had abolished slavery and made everyone equal, that really upset the South because they wanted to have power over the slaves, but they also wanted more territory, and so they declared war against the North. There was a lot of tension between both sides, they considered each other weak, but the North had way more weapons than the South which gave them a higher chance of winning. At first a majority of the states did not agree with these new laws, but by 1870, all of the former Confederate states had accepted them and were admitted into the union once again. That meant the freed Blacks could not adjust to the economy. This made freed Blacks to have to return to the plantations for work. The Supreme Court’s destroying constitional and legislative gains for Blacks by ruling in favor for the South. Southerners repeal the loyaly oath required to re-enter national economy. The Government needed to make America even greater than it was before, thus Reconstruction was born. Reconstruction was off to a rocky start, the North and South were still at each other's throats. As this period of time went on new laws were passed, some, we still have today and others were abolished for their cruelty.
