Reconstruction DBQ After the Civil War, the era of reconstruction was a time for America to try restructure and rebuild itself. To the United States demise, not much was actually reconstructed nor bettered concerning the lives of American citizens. The main cause of a somewhat failed attempt at reconstruction was the South, also known as the Confederates. Due to their recession towards slavery and dehumanization of African Americans, the South was the killer of reconstruction. The most prominent cause of the Civil War regarded the treatment of African Americans. The North fought to end slavery and consider blacks equal to whites and on the contrary, the South fought to continue slavery and keep the traditional practices used considering the treatment of blacks. Finishing victorious, the North tried their best to enforce humane treatment towards African Americans yet the South merely pushed these laws to the side. Due to the cycle in which workers would be constantly bombarded with large amounts of debt, they had no other choice then to keep working and try to stabilize their finances. With the little amount of necessities given, these workers were essentially held as slaves. Adding to the economic issues regarding sharecropping, farmers would usually have to give up around 50 to 60% of their harvested crop leaving them poor and resourceless (Document B). Another way that the South killed reconstruction was through voting practices. Confederates would violently force blacks into voting for southern representatives and if they were strong enough to disregard their threats, it wasn't uncommon that they would later be beaten, whipped, and attacked. (Document C) These practices went against the constitution and laws created after the Civil War and therefore are deemed to have taken part in diminishing
