Racial Discrimination And Discrimination

Today, racism and racial discrimination is something you see everyday. Whether it be in a news story, an article on social media, or something that you personally witness, but what is racism? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. This means that one race will discriminate another because they believe that their race is better. Some people think that the only people that can be racist are white people. Their definition of racism is summed up to white people discriminating against the minority including African Americans and Latinos. Their definition of racism is not true. Racism does go both ways. Anyone is capable of saying, “Hey, my race is better than yours for this reason.” This is called reverse racism. The term reverse racism is referred to as discrimination against racial majorities inflicted by racial minorities. Reverse racism does exist and it is just as common as racism (“Racism”).

Historically, racism has existed through out human history from 500- 1000 years. Racism is considered to be directed on the part of the Westerners towards the non westerners, such as the Asians, Africans and others. Racism however, is defined as hatred imposed from one person to another. Racism can also be that one particularly race is more superior than the other, or less human, due to the state of origin, colour of skin, language, ethnicity, gender, religious, and different biological characteristics (ADL archive). The essay will address the impact of racism to individuals and our community, and also further will discuss the nature of racism.

In this day in age Racial stereotypes appear to be as rampant as they were in the early 200s. The discussion and debate about race can be a sensitive and difficult subject for most individuals. Living in America is tough as it is with all of the crisis’s and chaos taking place left and right. That matter of race is a crisis of its own so to speak. One cannot express themselves completely to the extent of his or her liking without being judged, labeled or categorized.

The United States is considered one of the countries that have more immigrants in the world. Also, is considered as one of the countries that treat their population equally. According to Teresa Welsh, in 2013 North America has 989,900 immigrants, leading the U.S to be the top country for having more migrants. However, immigrants are facing discrimination and racism in this country.

In our society today, racial discrimination and inequality continues to be an issue. Regardless of the advancements we make in our society in terms of race, discrimination is something that can not simply be erased. The conflict with discrimination is evident when we look at the issue of racial profiling. Racial profiling refers to the treatment of an individual based on their race or ethnicity (Statistics of Racial Profiling 1). It is often a tool being used by law enforcement when deciding to confront an individual. The presence of racial profiling has caused many controversies to arise, specifically in airport security. Since the incident that occurred on 9/11, the issue has become a more relevant one. After the attacks, the government felt that it was necessary to create a counterterrorism campaign. The government claims that their actions to protect the nation from terrorists does not mean they are racially profiling. However, the clear discrimination that is directed towards Arabs and Muslims in the United States shows that it has crossed the line. The issue is dividing our community. Some people argue that national security is of the utmost importance in society and as a result, people feel the need to create a security method to protect us from potential harm. Other contend that this system created is nothing more than racial profiling that specifically discriminates against groups of people. Racism is very much still alive in the United States and it affects all people, but mainly one certain group. Racism destroys dreams and hopes for the victims that have been discriminated against and have sadly lost their lives as well. African Americans have less opportunities and chances to prove that they can also do good to some to the word instead of stereotypical judging them. White Americans, not all but the racist only, most likely believe that if you are different you have no power. Many white Americans might also believe that they are superior which means that they have the “power” to do or say whatever they feel like they can to other people of color. They must not have been taught manners because “if you do not have anything nice to say then do not say anything at all”. Most of the racism that still occurs happens most often in the southern states because of the history that is there.

Words used in society can have a big impact on people, this brings into question of whether some of these words should be allowed or restricted. Oppression and racism in America have been noted throughout history even before 1861. Words like the N-word made to specifically point out and criticize people based on just their skin tone. Though it may seem minimal, there are people who because of the actions in the past, conceal a distaste for the word. Others, taking into consideration that it has been over 100 years since, might not even feel afflicted. Kids often using the word as a substitute for ‘dude’ or ‘brother’. But the brutality that came with the N-word initially, is proof enough that this word is not acceptable in society.

I chose discrimination and prejudice for my multicultural paper, because I feel that discrimination and prejudice is the main reason for all the hate in the world. People are discriminated against because of reasons such as race, ethnicity, religion, looks, sex, sexual orientation, class, and other ridiculous reasons. I feel that if discrimination could be eradicated, then this world would be a peaceful place to live. Discrimination has been plaguing this world since the beginning of time. For this interview, I chose to speak with one of the Allied Barton security guards working in the Hopkins dormitories. I met her at the start of my freshman year, and we have remained close friends since. For the purposes of this paper, I will call her Shannon. When asked of her race, Shannon responded with, “Black.” However, Shannon later explained that she is half Native American and half black, as both her mother and father have Native American blood. Yet when asked to identify her race, Shannon very strongly felt that she was a black person, stating that others also perceived her to be black. We are all members of the human race and discrimination is an injustice; we must do something about it. For example, we can help who ever needs our help no matter what they look like. Starving people in our own country need food and medicine to live and we can give that to them even though they might look different than us, and even though they might have different skin than us. Color or race shouldn't stop us from saving someone's lives and caring for the sick and poor. Another example of discrimination in our world, is how some people don't get the same things as someone else because they look different. Even though someone looks different, it doesn't mean that they are different in a bad way and they shouldn't be put in the back of the kitchen
