According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, professionalism is defined as the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. A few pages to the left, efficient is defined as productive of desired effects, especially productive without waste, an efficient worker. A few more pages to the left, cordial is defined as showing or marked by warm and often hearty friendliness, favor, or approval, a cordial welcome.

Professionalism to me is being honest, having a high level of integrity, striving for excellence, respecting others and providing quality care with compassion.

According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary (2017), professionalism is “the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected to do a job well.” Medical professionals must possess occupational competence, ethical excellence, and exemplary patient relations. Occupational competence encompasses more than just job knowledge. While being technically competent to perform all necessary job functions is vital, a commitment to continually improve is essential. With the rate of technological advancements in the medical profession, continued education is required to stay abreast of changes. What does Professionalism mean to me? Professionalism in my term means it is someone who is very dedicated to their profession. It is an important and great decision to follow by the rules and ethics of professionalism. If we did not have anyone that cared about their profession it would cause a lot of problems in our society today. It could cause a lot of disruption in your workplace. In order to abide by professionalism you must take pride in your job, percieve realistic goals and values, and know what your expectations are.

Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.

A professional is characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace. Being professional should be a subconscious effort in the fact that it should always be applied. When employees are professional it helps the system run more efficiently and safely. Professionalism has a different meaning to everyone. To me it is defined as "the skill and good judgment that is expected from a person who is trained to do a specific job." As an EMS provider, I will be in contact with the public that is looking at me to be the best in my profession. They will expect me to carry myself in a professional manner. They will also expect the best care that I can provide, and that I can acknowledge when I need to call for ALS personal to render better care if needed.

Physicians put trust into nurses in order to carry out orders that are needed to save patients’ lives. The thought of professionalism conjures up many ideas, and possibly pre-conceived judgements. These will not always be classed as positive or negative, but will undoubtedly have a profound effect on the way you are perceived in your area of work or chosen profession.

In a highly respected profession such as nursing, professionalism is an important element to staying employed and setting one’s self apart from the rest of the applicants when competing for a potential job. By definition professionalism are the qualities and traits that describe a professional. While knowledge is crucial in any profession, according to an article published by the University of Kansas (2012), “all medical professionals must strive to retain those humanistic qualities integrity, respect, and compassion that constitute the essence of professionalism.” Whether you work in a hospital or administration these three qualities encompass the core of nursing and exemplify what it means to be a professional.

Professionalism is a (1) Theoretical knowledge on which practical or skill based activity rests, considering this, I applied my theoretical knowledge such as differentiate, individual needs into my practice. (2) Professionalism is formal, accredited qualification, providing grounding in theoretical knowledge; according to these, I am doing my assignments and voluntary teaching practice to obtain a certificate. (3) Licence to practice or some proof of occupational competence; according to this, I showed my Confirmation of Student Enrolment on Initial Teacher Training letter to my manager to get a voluntary teaching practice. (4) Professionalism is a code of professional conduct or practice; I follow my organisation’s rules and regulations such as health and safety rules, equality and diversity, time keeping, etc. (5) Professionalism is a professional body that represents the interests of practitioners and regulates their activity in some way, in my teaching practice their awarding bodies are Tinder Foundation, BBC Learning English and British Council. They regulate my organisation’s lesson plans and activities in some way and I follow them. (handouts, 2014)

My definition of professionalism is to be as professional as possible when in the classroom, meeting with colleagues, and talking to parents and guardians. Professionalism to me is also introducing new cultures and holidays to my students only after doing an immense amount of research and consulting with people in those cultures. Professionalism is also understanding the gender roles, sexualities, and families of the students in my classroom.

How do we get from a basic understanding of this definition, to practicing and applying professionalism? Major attributes that lead to professionalism can include accountability, communication and reflective practice. Reflective practice in the healthcare system is when “practitioners engage in a continuous cycle of self-observation and self evaluation in order to understand their own actions and the reactions they prompt in themselves” (becoming a better university teacher…). In the day-to-day life, everyone performs a type of reflection whether it is by unconscious thought or by habit. When it is unintentional it is hard to learn and grow from the knowledge that can potentially be gained. Therefore we need to find a way to effectively incorporate reflective practice into our daily lives, especially as radiation therapy students.
