Since a very young age we have been taught to put our trust into police officers. If we are in distress, they are always there to help since it is their job to protect and serve the common citizen. So what happens when the individuals we are supposed to trust to bring justice are the ones causing the injustice we see in the news? Recently, several police officers have been under fire for their excessive use of force. The number of casualties caused by police officers in the recent years have citizens demanding a reform in the system that officers work under. Police brutality is not a new subject. It has been around for numerous years, and like most issues, has resurfaced to the public’s eyes. The recent events brought up the question: Does there need to be a reform in the system in the police system? In this year alone, there have been countless cases of individuals being harmed or even killed by police officers for reasons that continuously are not explained. What has people more attentive to this injustice are statistics showing that most victims in these police attacks happen to be African Americans and other minorities. I find discomfort in the fact that those who have lost their lives to police officers will not be given the same fighting chance as their white counter parts for their freedom from whatever wrong doing they might have done. I know not all police officers are the same as the ones portrayed on the news, but still a part of me fears for my brothers and myself becoming a part of the extended list of individuals who have lost their lives to police brutality. Living in a state with a history of high racial tension doesn’t make the fear any better to deal with. This is a serious issue that needs reforming and that will not happen until we all bind together to do
