The reputation of the police profession is that of the 6 pillars of policing in the modern world as outlined by the President’s Task Force on the 21st Century Policing, which sought to recommend steps forward. Under the banners of ‘Building Trust and Legitimacy’, ‘Policy and Oversight’, ‘Technology and Social Media’, ‘Community Policing and Crime Reduction’, ‘Officer Training and Education’, and ‘Officer Safety and Wellness’ – here are concise definitions for each one and what they mean for American policing ("Final report of the resident’s task force on 21st century policing," 2015).

Cooperation from members of the public is important in order for police officers to effectively fight crime within the community. In order to obtain cooperation from members of the public, police officers must gain their trust and confidence. It has been known that African Americans and Hispanics have lower levels of trust and confidence in police because of racial disparities and racial profiling. In addition, officers must understand and be trained in the concept of community policing for the program to be a success. In a study of agencies that had implemented community policing programs, the National Institute of Justice found that most officers were poorly trained and did not understand the concept of community policing (Sadd & Grinc, 1996). In addition to the police officers within an agency, the local elected officials must also support the program. The agency and its administrator also need to educate the elected officials about community policing and what to expect from it. This will prevent unrealistic expectations from the program which will hinder the implementation and success of the program.

My goal is to create an effective program that promotes open communication between local law enforcement and the community. Having police and the community working as a cohesive team will achieve a safer environment for all.

It is easy to say that one of the most common complaints civilians have about police officers is that their communication problems. When officers embrace such an attitude, they run the risk of sending a message that was not meant to be in a bad way. Police officers with communication problems will cause the public to lack trust in the police officers. The profession that we are in, we rely on the public for information to help the police in fight crimes. In today’s society, police departments have to deal with socio-demographic issues. A community is a multitude of backgrounds, so the officer needs to be able to communicate with all. The more effective the officer is in communicating with the public, the public will be more supportive and accepting of the law enforcement (Yardley, 2013).
