Black lives matter! There have been so many black lives that have been taken this year. Black on black crimes vs white on white crimes are important to acknowledge. Yes, all live matter but African Americans matter more than others. It’s important to acknowledge the situation involving Alton Sterling, an African American who sold CDs and got shot severally because of a misunderstanding. It’s also important to acknowledge the case involving Dylann Roof, a Caucasian who killed 9 people and is still alive. Then, there’s the questions we ask ourselves: why is there mistreatment and brutality coming from police officers? Why do people stereotype African Americans? These are questions we ask ourselves and these are questions that need to be answered. …show more content…
The mistreatment between the police and the black community is a problem that needs to be fixed. There is a lack of respect when it comes to black people. If the police continues to stereotype African Americans, our country will not get better, it will only get worst. There is mistreatment towards the black community because of the lack of respect that most of these police officers have displayed. Stereotyping is one of the biggest issues we face everyday, and stereotyping black people gives police a mindset that all black people are dangerous, which is false. You hear a lot of white people saying, “Black lives don’t matter, all lives matter,” but what they clearly don’t understand is why black lives matter more than other races. Black people have to go through the worst things such as police brutality, stereotyping, a lack of respect and mistreatment. These are issues that must be stopped and …show more content…
Whether Black, White, Hispanic, Native American, or Middle Eastern, every one of these parents fear for the lives of their child at some point. As a young black male in this country, it’s difficult knowing that you don’t have police to protect you like they’re supposed to do. It’s agitating knowing that you don’t have the right support or protection from police and knowing that they aren’t there when you need them. It’s stupid knowing that these issues continue to occur and most of these white people think racism towards the African American race is not a problem. The white people say, “Black lives aren’t the only lives that matter,” well guess what? yes the fuck they do! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The main thing that white people often misinterpret is the reason why we, as African Americans are angry when it comes to these type of situations. The way that the black community view such situations aren’t the typical way a white person would look at these situations. The black community view these issues with the perspective of the past experiences from our American history that involves the treatment towards African Americans. Black parents feel dejected and worried to let their child go out into the real world not knowing whether they’re going to make it back home safely or if they’re even going to come home at
All across the nation, in the news the black community has been making their voice heard, in regards to white police brutality, and murder against the unarmed black community. Many of these brutal attacks and flat out murders of unarmed black people haven’t been largely prosecuted, some officers have even been acquitted of any wrong doing or murder. This has led to outrage in the African American community at large. The shooting of an unarmed black teen named Michael Brown caused the racial strain in this country to break.
Police brutality has been a major issue since slavery. In slavery people, mainly whites, were able to do anything to black people without having to deal without dealing with the consequences. Families were destroyed, people died, babies were killed, and many unknown factors still to this day that will never be known. When slavery was abolished, it did not end right away. It took several years and still is not abolished if you look at in a political way. People of power, mainly white, were not happy that a black person could be seen as equals. This is the main reason why they feel it is okay to lash out at black people. There are several major issues that are causing and epidemic in The United States. However, the main issue that seems to be the most discussed is about police brutality in the black community. “Police brutality is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. “Excessive use of force” means a force well beyond what would be necessary in order to handle a situation. Police brutality can be present in a number of ways. The most obvious form of police brutality is a physical form. Police officers can use nerve gas, batons, pepper spray, and guns in order to physically intimidate or even intentionally hurt civilians. Police brutality can also take the form of false arrests, verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, police corruption, racial profiling, political repression and the improper use of Tasers”
Over the last two years in the United States the African-American people have been fighting a war within our own backyards. The Washington Post reports that since January 2015, the police have shot and killed over 175 young black men ranging from ages 18-29; 24 of them were unarmed. On the flip side 172 young white men were killed, only 18 being unarmed. With these statistics there are similarities in the numbers but, blacks were killed at rates disproportional to their percentage of U.S population (1.Washington Post). Of all unarmed people shot and killed by police in 2015. With 40% being black men make up just 6% of the nation’s populations. In the wake of the killings of Mike Brown, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, and many more the world has been made more publicly aware of injustices black people have to handle when dealing with law enforcement. Crime in the black community is nothing new in the black community or should I say black on black crime. There is a bad stereotype that has been put on black people since slavery times that I believe has help fueled the violence between the police and my people.
Because of this, we would see people with different backgrounds getting shot and arrested for no reason. Whenever we go on social media, we would see that people are living in a state of fear whenever a police is nearby because they don’t know whether something bad will happen to them. In the article, “Something’s wrong when the law-abiding are afraid of police,” it talks about how a black woman was fearing for her life because a police officer pulled her over. The police officer didn’t arrest or shoot her, but instead asked her if she was feeling fine since she was driving under the speed limit. People started commenting that this black woman wouldn’t need to fear the police officer if she obeyed him. Perhaps that’s true for someone else, but African Americans are living a different truth. The problem with this is that no one should fear a police officer because they are suppose to serve and protect the community. When someone is fearing a police officer then we know that something isn’t right. We see that many different ethnic people are getting killed by police officers because they don’t seem to trust them but white people. That is why as a community, we should train police officers to become more comfortable with residents of a different racial background. Police officers are required to make our society safe but it turns out that they are the one that are causing us to live in a state of perturbation. For that reason, we know that our police officers are
Although African Americans may make up 13% of the U.S. population and 14% of monthly drug users, they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses. The chances of a policeman stopping blacks are higher than the chances of them stopping whites. It is proven that the police force will ignore the situation of a white person committing a major crime. Compare any case of a black person involved with drugs to the case of Dylann Roof, a white twenty-one year old that opened fire and killed nine black people, and nothing makes sense. Witnesses say he proclaimed his hate for black people right before he began shooting. When he was arrested, the police were very polite to him and never treated him
Cops beat blacks mostly because of certain stereotypes (blacklivesmatter.com). Police brutality of blacks is a form of hatred that still very much exists. “Police brutality, and unjust discrimination is still alive, only it's getting worse” (huffingtonpost.com Black Lives Matter). Officers, more commonly caucasian police, discriminate because of the negative perceptions they undoubtedly have on blacks. For example, just on March 14, 2016, an unarmed, african american male was fatally shot and killed because the police assumed he was up to no good . “A Raleigh police officer recently shot and killed an unarmed African American because he ‘looked dangerous’” (http://countercurrentnews.com). Another example is the infamous Trayvon Martin situation. Where George Zimmerman, a local neighborhood watch coordinator, murdered him because he was black and had his hood up. So Zimmerman automatically supposed Martin was dangerous.
Racial profiling is a big deal today in our society; incase you didn’t know racial profiling is the act of suspecting or targeting a person of a certain race based on a stereotype about their race. Stereotyping is the leading cause of racial profiling. Yes, it’s true, the police racially profile and are beginning to get out of control but racial profiling goes far beyond just the police. Look at the cases where it wasn’t the police who were at fault; cases like The Trayvon Martin case, the airport, the Christopher Dorner situation when the police were on the other end of things or even now where black people are taking it upon themselves to go out of their way to kill white cops. I’m not saying that the police aren’t wrong sometimes or that they never take advantage of their power but I people sometimes forget that police are human too. People as well as police officers need to remember that the police's job is to serve and protect the people and that not all police are bad. It’s also up to the citizens to be responsible and work with the police. In order to fix the problem and stop the corruption, the citizens of America need to look at the problem as a whole.
Police misconduct has been a problem for decades. People have been; falsely imprisoned, beaten, robbed, raped, and killed at the hands of corrupt cops. This has been a problem for a long time to a diverse group of people, however, it has always and continues to be a major problem for black or African American people. African Americans have been brutalized and killed by corrupt cops since the 1600’s, sadly this behavior continues in the year 2016. The United States government should put policies and laws in place to hold corrupt police offers accountable for their crimes, and possibly put an end to the injustice of the “so called” justice system.
I have become involved in the recent shootings involving police officers and black youths. My late father was a police officer and have had for many years a feeling of trust for police officers. I believed they protected the public. I would still like to believe that but that attitude has taken a beating of late. I have come to think that there is something wrong with race relations in America in general and police-black relations in general. It started with the Trayvon Martin case when many people took a negative attitude toward victim in the case. It continued with the Ferguson situation. There were many officers in that town that took a negative attitude toward blacks. It escalated with the Erik Garner case--the actions of the officers
Cops and African Americans don’t seem to being getting along, is the African American community broken or are the cops to be blamed. Over the past years you have heard of people, more specifically African Americans, being harmed or killed unarmed. It is no surprise that cops are treating them as dangerous animals. A cop managed to kill Samuel DuBose, forty-three years old, who escaped from the hands of the cop and was running away. The cops said that he had feared for his life when Samuel truly had never truly harmed or threatened the cop.
Yes all lives matter, however, a pattern of black men and women have been murdered by police brutality; therefore, we need to concentrate on preserving Black at this moment. At this very moment, in the United States, there have been destructive riots and peaceful protest from all races but mostly African Americans because we continue to witness our black men and women die from police brutality without justice being served. It is significant that whoever wins the presidential Election will take steps in assuring that all people especially black people are protected by the police and not murdered by them. It is important that this president take steps in assuring that the justice system will began to be just in cases such as the Treyvon Martin, Eric Garner and Sarah Bland. It is important the president ensures that officers are properly trained when it comes to dealing with those who are unarmed for the simple fact that there are other methods to arresting a person that is unarmed without killing them. It is prominent that the President search for other solutions that will decrease the amount of police brutality that is inflicted on African Americans on a day to day basis. Because quite frankly, we are disgusted and angry, and tired of seeing youth die for ridiculous reasons.
The law enforcement was created to bring peace and safety among the community where it is needed. And we were all taught to respect them. But quite frankly some of their knowingly wrongful actions made the entire law enforcement seem awful. And they broke our trust and respect for them all. Today, there has been a plethora of killings among black men by the police. Five years ago, when the death of Trayvon Martin occurred, pain and anger was then brought upon his families, friends, his community, and nationwide. They wanted justice to be served for their lost loved one and they continued to fight for it. It seemed to what might had been the last of the innocent and brutal killings among young black men by an officer. But unfortunately, after two years had passed, a few other killings occurred. There was Dontre Hamilton, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown Jr., etc., who were all fatally shot by an officer multiple times and the killings sadly continue to rise tremendously.
Out of those 346 people, 30% of the victims were unarmed, and fewer than 1 in 3 black people killed by police in America were suspected of a violent crime and allegedly armed. It’s clear that there is a problem amongst police. I believe not only does it have to do with the racial factor, but with the superiority and power that police abuse. Over centuries, people of African descent or people of color- have endured violence in many prejudice ways. Today, police officers are using excessive force, deadly beatings and shootings, that are in no way excusable. In history, violence against certain races, today, police brutality, had been and is still used to suppress blacks and protect the power for the government and “superior” white races. Since
America has a growing number of black-on-black crimes that seem to go unnoticed in the Black Lives Matter movement. It appears that black lives are significantly more important when a Black life is taken by a white person, especially a white police officer. Black Lives Matter was started because so many people claim that African Americans are often shot by the police and killed more than whites. However the truth is blacks are more likely to kill a cop than to be killed by cops, according to FBI data. Another fact is that more whites and Hispanics died from police homicides than blacks. Twelve percent of white and Hispanic deaths were due to police officer's. Only four percent of black homicides we're committed by police officer's. Black Lives Matter campaign is causing separation and segregation between the different races, Black lives Matter is not benefiting America as a whole. Americans need to unify and stop looking at each other as the "black race" or quote on quote in the white race, Americans need to see each either as a
Some may ask how do we manage? Some may ask what is it like? And then some may ask do we wish that we can switch races? In my opinion, those questions answered every day in the most unnoticed, silent ways. But this isn’t about my opinions or about my beliefs about this society and how they treat our kind. This is about the truth, the truth that everyone is so scared to bring up because they think it’s just going to cause even more problems than where it 's at right now. Well I’m here to say that it shouldn’t be that way. I’m here to say that all the cops who shot down multiple black people, innocent black people at that. And on top of that, those cops end up getting off without getting locked up. There were a total of 1,134 black people
