Every time a police officers puts on his/her uniform his/her life becomes dangerous. They put their lives in harm’s way to protect the citizens of their town/city. Unfortunately, not every Officer lives to tell their story. Some of them die heroic deaths while others do not. These officers are a symbol of hope for some people, and a symbol of control and tyranny to others. Some honor their code, while others abuse their power, entirely. We all owe a great debt to those who die in the line of duty. In this paper I will be telling you about Chief of police, Steven Eric DiSario. Steven DiSario, was born in Salem, Ohio on February 2, 1979 and died Friday, May 12, 2017. The 38 year old was the Chief of Police in Kirkersville. Eric was married and had a …show more content…
Chief of police DiSario was responding to a call that said there was an armed man inside a nursing home near Columbus, Ohio (Gunman Kills Ohio Police Chief, 2 others, 2017). When the Chief of police arrived, he was ambushed. The last thing that DiSario said on the radios was that he had the gunman in sight. Two people who worked at the nursing home were also shot and killed. The gunman was a 43 year old man by the name of Thomas Hartless, which I find rather fitting. Considering what he did. In 2010, Mr. Hartless was sentenced to two years for abduction and assault, but was released eight months later (Police Chief killed, three dead in shooting, 2017) Then he was also arrested for domestic violence at the beginning of 2017. Hartless had taken two hostages into a wooded are. However, they were found, unharmed. homas Hartless was also shot and killed at the scene. Hartless girlfriend was one of the employees that was killed during this endeavor. I’m not entirely sure of where these two men were shot. I can’t find it anywhere. Unfortunately, Steven was Chief of police for a few weeks before his life was
Starting In 1829, Sir Robert Peel began developing his theory of policing. These nine principles are as relevant today as they were in the 1800's. Peel established the Metropolitan Police when he served as Home Secretary of England. Since Sir Robert Peel introduced his principles of policing in the early 1800's, our country has continued to follow his ideas of effective policing. Community policing is based on Peel's concept of prevention.
The Philadelphia Police Department is known to be one of the oldest police departments, dating back to 1854 when it was officially established by state law. The Philadelphia Police Department was initially created to prevent crime and detain criminals. After William Penn received the land known today as the city of Philadelphia, he wanted to assure there would be order within his land and thus appointed a sheriff. Starting as early as 1700, a Philadelphia ‘night watch’ was established to keep a watch throughout the city in order to be aware of any criminal activity going on throughout the night. In the early 1800s due to advancement in both watchmen numbers and payment capabilities, the watch was officially a twenty-four hour watch with hundreds
The goal of the Sacramento State Police Department is “ to ensure that you are on one of the safest campuses in the CSU system” said by Sac State Chief of Police, Mark M. Iwasa. With the amount of incidents increasing more and more on college campuses, Michelle Cowee is taking her safety into her own hands.
NYC policing has been an ongoing problem for many years now, but in recent years it has gone to the point that civilians are starting to kill off our protection. What are the main issues for the police to abuse their power on us citizen’s, is it being racist affecting on how they do their job or is it another element being in played for cops to abuse their powers? In my paper, I will be talking about the certain trainings that an officer should receive before and after finishing the police academy. Being trained in a certain way can affect the way that a cop will do their job and if a police officer is not being trained in an efficient way then it can cause chaos with us as citizens. What is the true problem within police officers in New York
In 1937 Violet Hill Whyte became the Baltimore Police Department’s first African American female officer. Harry Scott, Walker Eubnaks Jr., Milton Gardner and J. Butler Jr. were hired as the first African American men for the BPD and assigned to plainclothes. It was not until 1943 African American officers could finally wear police uniforms and by 1938 there were about fifty African American officers working for the Baltimore Police Department.
In today’s society police forces all across the nation are undergoing extreme scrutiny due to numerous instances that have taken place. While the media seems to be focusing on the negative aspects of these instances and stirring even more controversy, I think that a pivotal part of the story isn’t being told. This part of the story comes from the officers’ perspective; the perspective of the people that are sworn to uphold the law and to protect the citizens in their community. This paper is designed to bring light to that side of the story, the side of the officer, the importance of their position, the dangers that they face on a daily basis to protect members of the community, and how as a public we can better understand and appreciate what police officers do for us each and every day.
In today's modern world any use of force, whether deadly in nature or not, is subjected to the scrutiny of the media as well as the court of public opinion. Allegations of the use of excessive force by police departments in the United States continue to dominate the top news sources in the nation. However, citizens never hear of the countless incidents where officers choose to hold fire and display restraint under extreme stress, or decide to instead utilize less than lethal means to achieve their objective. Split-second decisions, even when made under ideal or perfect circumstances, are exceptionally difficult. Even well-trained officers are not consistently able to discharge their firearm, if appropriate, in the time before a suspect holding
On May 31, 2016 at approximately 0437 hrs, I observed a silver 2000 Nissan Sentra bearing SC#KMC164 which was stopped for the red light on the intersection on Renaissance Blvd West with center brake light not functioning. I positioned my patrol vehicle 535 behind the Nissan Sentra and followed him after the light turned green. I activated my overhead emergency lights and conducted a motor vehicle stop.
The American policing system has its origin already in the 1600s when the first police officer was referred to as a shout. Due to the demographic shift between rural and urban areas in the 1800s, a need for protection became apparent in the city environment. During such urbanization period, British, as well as New York policing forces, presented great similarities. Initially, the policing system was strictly connected to the ‘watch system’. The watchmen were mostly responsible for protecting urban property and population from rapidly increasing crime and fire. In 1829, Sir Robert Peel reforms the watch system making it one of the first full-time professional force controlled by the British government. The professionals watched London streets constantly; they were also “uniformed and highly visible; and they stressed prevention rather than investigation of crime” (Lardner and Reppetto 17). As it can be seen, policing became an apparent and visible component of social and urban setting.
Our police started out as a part of the British law enforcement system, which was used to control convicts. Police used to operate under British law, however as our country evolved and through events such as the gold rush, the police force had to change to accommodate for the changed in the country. Since the Queensland Police Force began operating under its own legislation on January 1, 1864, with only 143 employees, much has changed to bring us the police force we have now. Not only have the advances in technology increased the ability that police officers have to keep us safe, but also the many changes in the views of our society have created a diverse police force. The police play an integral role
What is not routinely expressed to police offiders, but rather what they realize rapidly in the city, is that different subjects, not rarely, detest their mediation. What's more, different natives, when treated suspiciously by the police, may respond with antagonistic vibe, disdain, scorn, and sometimes, physical brutality. Nor are cops routinely taught that specific sections of the populace despise them or hold them in scorn essentially on the grounds that they wear the identification and uniform. On the off chance that individuals from these gatherings challenge the power of the police, the police will, taking into account their preparation, frequently depend on dangers of power or the utilization of power to force their power, which regularly
As stated in the reading police have subcultures that help to guide officers actions some being good and others not so good. Pollack (2017) list three factors that help to form these subgroups, "police typically form a homogenous social group, they have a uniquely stressful work environment, they participate in a basically closed social system” (p. 129). The Ramparts scandal took place within the Los Angeles police department which was known as one of the worst police corruptions. These group of police officers had formed their own subculture one where illegal activity was the norm and getting paid on the side from stealing drugs and falsely accusing people was acceptable. If the police officer Perez wasn't caught stealing drugs and forced to get a lesser sentence by turning evidence against the department who knows how many more years the subculture at the LAPD would have continued.
The Calgary police service serves and protects us.It would take about 2-3 minutes for the police to come right where you are.The police also educate children about bad drugs, gangs, and bullying. This helps the kids think about the right choices in their life.It also shows them what type of person they want to be when they grow up, a criminal or a responsible citizen.
The Thin Blue Line of Sub-culture Police officers everyday are involved in their own sub-culture, which shapes their behaviour and attitude towards society. This sub-culture is made through the bond shared through serving the community and looking out for one another day in and day out while performing his/her duties as law enforcement officers. Sticking together allows them to conquer their battles against any hardships or crisis situations faced in their day-to-day agenda. The us versus them mentality, which police officers have been labeled with raises suspicion on how law enforcement officers truly feel about the sub-culture and the community, which they serve.
