Police Brutality And Its Effects On The United States

-By definition the term police brutality is “applied in the context of causing physical harm, it may also involve psychological harm through the use of intimidation tactics beyond the scope of officially sanctioned police procedure.” In today’s society we have police known as riot police, who are known throughout the world to use extreme force. Statistics show almost every time the riot police are involved in crowd control, there is at least one fatality and multiple injured. This is why I believe this is one of the most important issues in the World today. Police are there to protect us but from April 2009 to June 2010 in the United States there were 5986 reports of misconduct from police officers. Police brutality has today’s citizens doubting the police department, and how they go about their arrest. Police brutality is an everyday occurrence, especially in cities where there are large communities of Blacks, Latinos and Asians.

Over the past few years, the citizens of the Unites States have been witnesses of many cases of police brutality. Police officers are faced with a lot of threatening situations every day. And sadly, the police have to rely on their instincts and hope for the best. They have the power to take anyone’s civil rights away and possibly even their own life. You must have responsibility in order to retain that kind of power. Much less, that much power. The use of excessive force may or may not be a big problem, but I think it should be viewed from everyone’s perspectives. Over the years there have been a large number of police brutality incidences reported in the United States. Unfortunately, there have been a large number of cases where the law enforcement officers have been at fault, but in turn, there have also been cases where the law enforcement officers have been falsely accused. In order to increase the public’s faith and trust in law enforcement, footage needs to be made available to, not only the press, but also the public eye with body cameras. Not only will these body cameras help prevent violence, but it will also show positive footage of good working law enforcement officers, and also hold law enforcement officers liable for their unjustified actions by being recorded.

There is an ongoing conversation on what it will take to reduce police brutality in this country. There have been many suggestions by politicians on the ways that it could possibly be reduced. One of the things that is constantly brought is the possibility of police officers nationwide wearing mounted cameras on them throughout the duration of their shifts. This technology comes with both its positive and negative benefits, but it seems to be the topic most commonly talked about. I believe that this technology goes deeper than simply ensuring police officers aren’t victimizing the public. I believe that this technology carries many more benefits along with it. Whatever is going on between the black community and the police force is reflective of the deep-seated racial system in the United States and in particular, within the US judicial system (Tharoor). Police brutality is a thorny issue in the US society mainly due to misconduct on the police side and hatred on the community’s side. However, the current police killings of black people and retaliation of the black community are not because every police officer is racial; they are rather a result of few bad elements in the US law enforcement system. Such police officers are making it dangerous for both the black population and the police force to coexist in the society. Therefore, it is my belief that the current situation between black people and the police is the result of the racism that exists in a few police officials.

Police brutality is an ongoing problem in the United States. Law enforcement agents are there to protect the public for they have the legal right to use physical, and even deadly, force. However, many of these officers abuse of that power. In the past year, there have been more than 900 cases of police abuse. Most of the victims have been innocent, unarmed, and/or of color. Police brutality is becoming more and more of an issue as society keeps growing. This nationwide problem could be solved in many ways, but having peaceful protests and by educating our police officers about racial differences are two good possible solutions.

News headlines demonstrating the brutality of law enforcement has been becoming more frequent over the past couple of years. When you hear about these cases of police brutality, how often is it that law enforcement officials are punished for the crime they have perpetrated? Most of the time the law enforcement officials, who are very well in the wrong do not get any kind of punishment whatsoever for the crimes that they have committed and it all comes back to the power that they have. Police brutality cases have been on the rise in the last couple of years where it is not even surprising when we hear about it which is really disheartening. The law enforcement brutality census is mind-boggling. At the end of 2015, the Washington Post released an article which stated the statistics of police brutality. According to the Washington Post, 965 people were fatally shot by police officers in 2015, 564 of these fatalities were armed with a firearm, 281 were armed with another kind of weapon, and 90 of them were unarmed (Kindy, Fisher, Tate and Jenkins, 2015).

The focus of my research is on police brutality, specifically on the various components of excessive force and what aspects of American culture allow it to continue. This topic is multidisciplinary, and fits within the bounds of sociology, African American studies, criminal justice, law, and public policy. There are multiple factors which influence police brutality, including but not limited to, location, segregation, community accountability, demographics, and current events. The research used within this paper all attempt to answer one or more of the aforesaid factors. The ultimate goal of this paper is to determine the overall impacts of all aspects of police brutality.

The police work to keep everyone safe and keep order in society by enforcing laws, by investigating and preventing crimes. Recently it has become clear that things do not always work on that way. Sometimes police officers brutalize civilians and damage their possessions. The United States of America is one country where this phenomenon of police brutality is intensifying with no signs of slowing down. According to the statistics of The Washington Post, American police merely shot a thousand of people last year, and of those, just five hundred and sixty four were armed with guns. Kimberly Kindy, an investigative reporter at the newspaper Washington Post warned the public opinion about the trend of this phenomenon when she said, "In fact there has been an increase, a six per cent increase in fatal shootings when we compare the first six months of last year to the first six months of this year. There are about three people who are dying a day fatally shot by officers”. Her investigation provides evidence that the violence is increasing daily. It becomes clear that the violence of police forces becomes a serious national problem. However, this police brutality is the tree that conceals the huge crisis of the American Police.

A disabled man was shot and killed by the police in Delaware, US. The event strikes a signifiicant resemblance to many similar police shootings that reportedly took place in the USA over the past year. The case is almost always the same. One, or more, police officers fatally shoot or seriously injure a citizen, claiming to be afraid for their safety. The victims range a lot in variety and are oftenly disabled people, like the aformentioned man, or even children and teenagers. The frequency of these shootings/attacks showcase well enough how normalised and frequent police brutality is in the states.

Over the last 16 years police brutality has gotten bigger. Police brutality is the use of excessive or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilian. Which in this case is used everywhere in the U.S. with every race. But people think that they only use assistive force on black people. But, in some cases that’s not true the use assistive force on every race.

Now days so many people were shoot by police officers. The society have been frightening about these situations. There are eyewitness videos as evidence, however; we have seen these cops still working. Nobody didn’t give attention to it and people who lost their family, friends and children need a justice. There are many videos that shows about police brutality, however, we have seen this cops on their jobs because these cops are all white people and the head of department police doesn’t take the action.

Police brutality has always been an issue in American society; however recently police brutality as become a more prominent issue in the media as well as among concerned citizens. The current display of brutality towards citizens has changed the views of the current generation’s outlook towards the police’s misuse of authority. Citizens claim to feel less protected by the police department, I had a friend tell me that one of her best friends is terrified by the police and the authority they hold. So, for my research topic I decided to go out and find information on this issue. I did a five question survey to get a glimpse of how the youth’s views of the police department and the recent acts of brutality they have displayed, hoping to see if their recent acts have changed their views.

There are two type of police brutality, verbal and physical. The first type of police brutality is verbal abuse which can happen anytime when the police officer is doing a routine traffic stop. Sexual comments is a form of verbal abuse. Another type of police brutality is physical. Police brutality is when law enforcement uses excessive force when dealing with a civilian. Excessive force means well beyond what would be necessary to handle to situation, you don 't want to get yourself hurt or anyone in society. There are many ways law enforcement can intentionally hurt someone by using their baton, pepper spray and gun. In today 's society, there have been many cases of police brutality, for example the Eric Garner case, Ferguson and many more. There were 382 fatalities reported relating to police brutality. It is violating someone 's rights if police brutality is practiced. If police brutality happens, it is violating someone 's eighth amendment Constitutional right regarding cruel and unusual punishment. American citizens are outraged by police misconduct and how police officers handle situations using too much excessive force, which can cause riots.

In the United States of America, law enforcement have been the guardians of protection and the enforcers of law. Although it may seems like everything is going to be peaceful, law enforcement officers have used abused their authority within the community. Police brutality is getting worse in the United States, which caused fears among citizens. Researchers stated that law enforcement officers informed them that brutality is the first step on abandoning their integrity (Ivkovic, 2005). In today’s society, police officer must warn the suspect on his or her right to have an attorney and to remain silent. When a police officer is trying to subdue a suspect at a crime scene, he or she must not use a level of force that can results in civil liability
