Remember that Disney movie of an American Indian tribe member with the long, flowy hair? If so, that might have been Pocahontas. Pocahontas was the beautiful daughter of the Powhatan leader, who the English named Virginia. Her story was truly amazing. I chose this topic because of the curiosity of who this beautiful lady really was, and what journeys in life she had overcome. This topic was brought up in Social Studies class as we were doing centers. One of the centers was only about her, and I have been curious ever since. Who was Pocahontas, you say? Well, I wondered the same thing. She was apart of the Powhatan Tribe. Being in that tribe, her father was the leader of it. Her real name was Matoaka, which meant “little snow feather.” As Pocahontas grew into a juvenile, she received the name Pocahontas, which meant “the naughty one” or “spoiled child.” Pocahontas had a beautiful life until the English colonists had arrived. She had to be stopped at Gravesend where she passed away at. Rebecca passed away when she was only 22 years old. She was treated like a celebrity at the time she was alive, and she lived a beautiful life until then. Rebecca died by getting sick, but it’s not proven on what she had to die. In the text it states “Rolfe, his young wife, and their son set off for Virginia in March of 1617, but "Rebecca" had to be taken off the ship at Gravesend. She died there on March 21, 1617, at the age of 21. She was buried at Gravesend, but the grave was destroyed in a reconstruction of the church. It was only after her death and her fame in London society that Smith found it convenient to invent the yarn that she had rescued him.” This tells me that after Pocahontas died, she gained fame from London. This leads to me thinking and questioning myself asking did the English people accept Pocahontas for who she really
