The poem ‘Migrants’ by Bruce Dawe should be included for the core text for journeys because it clearly demonstrates two types of journeying; physical and emotional. This poem presents the process of the group of migrants being accepted and shows that the migrants had to go through an emotional journey until they connected with the citizens. This poem also gives us an insight on our current society and people take time to accept those from somewhere else. All heroes around the world go through a journey of their own. Those journeys can be a physical, , mental, emotional journey, and lots more. These types of personal journeys are demonstrated in an epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, an interview, The Hero’s adventure by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers, a short poem, Courage by Anne Sexton, a graphic novel, The Odyssey by Gareth Hinds. They all show how journeys can be transformative and show a person’s strengths and/or weaknesses.

These prominent themes are manipulated through the motif of travelling, flashbacks and symbolism.

A Journey can be a process of self-discovery, a movement of one’s location, a shift in direction leading to an understanding of the world and themselves. In order for a journey to take place it must have one key ingredient, that is, a traveller. Journey is happening all around us to deny it is to deny the very meaning of life itself, it is a necessary part of human nature and it’s how we act upon it that defies the impact felt and destination found. Through Michael Gow’s ‘Away’ and ‘The Blind Side’ produced by John Lee Hancock, applications of both dramatic and film techniques allow the responder to see the direct impacts a journey puts on the traveller, either physically, emotionally or spiritually.

The mere fact that journey narratives have persisted in literature, without inherently being regarded as overused, outdated, or clichéd, is indicative of the impact and influence this technique has when executed effectively. Additionally, this is testament to its adaptability, and capacity to complement and integrate within various styles and genres. There are the tourists—those who seek temporary relaxation, or famous sights. There are the travelers—those who wander, without aim, for the love of moving. There are the explorers—those seeking adventure, the thrill of unearthing things rarely seen.

Travellers in order to arrive at their desired destination may encounter hardships as a result of trying to proceed forwards or overcoming obstacles. Journeys challenge travellers with obstacles and without being able to overcome them, may result in life changing consequences preventing the traveller from reaching their destination. The poems by Peter Skrzynecki and Missing Her are two texts in which an exploration of how failure to overcome obstacles within journeys may have resulted in different destinations for the traveller.

Foster created a hypothetical story about sixteen year old Kip during the summer of 1968. While on his way to buy a loaf of Wonderbread, he encountered a German shepherd and saw his crush, Karen, playing around and laughing with the boy he hates, Tony Vauxhall. He goes on to share with readers that to the audience it may seem as an average teen running errands for his mother, while a true professor would have seen it as a quest where a knight had an unsuitable encounter with his enemy. A quest consists of a knight, a dangerous road, a Holy Grail, a princess, an evil knight, and a dragon: Kip, the knight, travels the dangerous road of German shepherds seeking a Holy Grail(a loaf of Wonderbread). During the quest he encounters a dragon(Tony’s Barracuda), an evil knight(Tony), and a princess(Karen). His comparison between the hypothetical story and the knight’s quest implies that the symbols and experience employed by the story are universal regardless of its time and/or place. The Crying of Lot 49, a book with “cartoonish elements”, is broken down to teach readers that quests come in different forms and literature will be better understood only if they strengthen their ability to discover a story’s intertextual connection(s). The only way to gain self-knowledge is to step back and dig deeper beyond the story’s surface; use interpretation to find the real reason for the quest, remembering that “always” and “never” have no meaning

For many, life out on the road is a way for individuals to experience freedom away from society. When experiencing freedom, it brings happiness to some and creates a fascinating appeal towards what life can potentially be on the road. This idealistic venture is seen in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, narrating the journey of a privileged young adult named Chris McCandless. Krakauer guides the reader through the journey of McCandless of why and how left his old, but very comfortable life for an unpredictable one, by traveling to Alaska and living off its land. While many believe life on the road is a source of finding happiness, it is not an effective way to solve one’s problem; therefore, one should not live life on the road.

A trip can be often looked upon as a quest, according to professors such as Thomas Foster. In Cormac McCarthy’s book, “The Road,” exposes father and son fighting to survive the post apocalyptic world. Keeping the light alive, the two embark on a daunting journey in hope to finding the good guys. Love and sacrifice is one's way of living. The human condition is brought out in a negative way when the two have to feed off each other as to being fed off by others.

Sometimes the destination of your journey matters and in other cases the destination is pointless. These characters go on journeys to to learn lessons or reach a destination. In “The Odyssey” by Homer and “The Cruelest Journey” by Kira Salak, goes through obstacles into their journey where they endure new things during their journey.

The short stories A Worn Path by Eudora Welty and Used To Live Here Once by Jean Rhys both carry the theme, symbolism of a journey. In both writings the authors used people, places and things to symbolize something extra, expanding the stories into more than just what is read. I chose these stories because they both consist of strong symbolic references to life. Each story was written in a third-person point of view and consisted of a journey made by the main characters, which in both cases happened to be a black woman.
