Guns on Campus
How would you feel knowing that a responsible adult you trusted was able to conceal carry on your home campus? Personally, I would feel safe, but I would feel much safer being able to carry that gun and protect myself at any moment needed. Gun laws are the cause of much of the violent crime in the United States and need to be changed in order to make it easier for Americans to purchase handguns, carry them as concealed weapons and protect themselves.
Many who are against guns and want them unpurchasable to the public don't realize that people who want to kill (with guns) will find a way to get a gun, legal or not. They don't realize that it isn't the gun that pushes the person to commit the crime, it is the person's damaged mental capacity that makes them do so. Charles Whitman, an ex-Marine, went on a killing spree at the University of Texas in 1966 due to his unstable mental health. He repeatedly sought out help for his health, even telling his psychiatrist about wanting to go up to the UT Tower with a rifle and shoot people, but was blown off by his doctor. He ended up shooting 41 people, killing 16 and injuring 31. After his death, being brought down by brave Austin police officers, he wrote in his death note: "After my death, I wish an autopsy on me be performed to see if there are any mental disorders." This is a prime example of someone compelled by their own urges to seek out a weapon and inflict pain on others. Now let's re-evaluate this story, but
Due to the recent upheaval of violent crimes on campus, many pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Those for this may claim that their rights have been violated because many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on campus. It is not the right to carry a gun which is in debate here, but rather it is whether or not guns should be allowed on a college campus. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns, and being in the south, I am by far no stranger to seeing a gun from time-to-time, but it is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus. There are already too many guns available to the public, and allowing them on an educational facility would greatly increase the likelihood of injury or death. Americans, as previously mentioned, have the right to bear arms, and this should be held sacred, and not infringed, taken away, or limited. However, stricter firearm control should be implemented for those who chose to carry a concealed weapon, and gun control should be done by having stricter certification processes before a firearm or gun permit is issued, intensive psychological evaluation for the person or persons applying for a gun permit or a gun,and greater educational requirements for gun owners and firearm safety.
“Gun control? We need bullet control! I think every bullet should cost $5,000. Because if a bullet cost $5,000, we wouldn’t have any innocent bystanders.” (Rock, 1999) Chris Rock got a big laugh when he expressed his comical stance on the issues with guns. With the heart-wrenching reality of the Virginia Tech massacre, the issue of whether or not guns should be allowed on college campus has returned to the forefront of debates, and this is no longer a
If college campuses legalize the right to obtain a concealed weapon there could a risk of escalation in violence on college campuses. Allowing college students to carry a concealed weapon on campus makes for many opportunities of potential misuse of the weapon. According to the Journal of American College Health, most college students don't have experience shooting or holding a gun, therefore, they could make a mistake and unintentionally harm somebody or even themselves. Granting college students access to guns will pose increased risks of incidents of self-injury, accidental shootings and even murders. The University of Louisiana system shows that evidence also indicates that the presence of concealed weapons on campus would increase the likelihood of
The modern world is a scary place. As technology advances and the world population grows we start to see a larger number of mass shootings. Some politicians say the only way to prevent these mass shootings is by disarming the public. I disagree, regardless of any laws or regulations a person that wants to obtain a firearm will obtain a firearm. It's been proven that areas with a higher concentration of firearms are safer, if defenseless people aren't getting killed there will be less pain, and if people can take on an active shooter with the same amount of firepower there will be less loss of life during these events. I feel with the proper firearms education school campuses could be made a lot safer than they currently are.
According to Nicholas Kristof’s article “our blind spot about guns” gun control is a lot like cars regulation such that if we can regulate cars we can regulate guns. It took a lot of time and effort but thanks to regulations cars are safer than they were many years ago, and the same is very possible with guns. We need to keep our country safe. The first steps to gun control are improving on background checks and also requiring trigger locks on all guns.
Our schools have been deeply affected by mass shootings and weak gun violence laws. This country has had over 1000 mass shootings in the past two years and over 50 school shootings, killing thousands of innocent little children. Our government needs to put up strict gun laws that allow administrators in all schools to use necessary force against a school shooter or anyone who tries to harm students of such nature.
It is only April 16th in the year. Only about 16 weeks have passed, and there has already been more than a dozen school shootings. Innumerable of innocent children, fearing for their life and sadly, many of those kids were killed. Now think about it, it could be anyone. Any person could easily purchase a deadly gun, because the current gun control laws are inefficient. A change needs to happen now. Not only for the safety of students at schools, but for the safety of everyone in the United States. The current gun laws are extremely flawed, resulting in more gun violence and deaths, and these laws need to be reformed.
Throughout history many gun owners carried a concealed weapon. In recent years concealed weapons have made a transition from being used as protection to being used for harming others. Because of the rise in shootings colleges and schools are having to take action in finding a way to prevent shootings. The government is also trying to bring public shootings to a halt by tightening gun laws. The effects of being able to carry a concealed weapon has made a large impact in schools and public places.
Gun control for who? Given the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a lone gunman killed over 50 people and injured hundreds, the discussion of gun rights a dispute in the country’s storied culture wars will fail in any substantial changes to current laws. While I strongly dislike hearing of senseless deaths, especially when they seem preventable with proper legislation, however I know of gun control problematic racist past; not everything is black or white.
More times than not when the issue of gun control is brought into conversation the Second Amendment is the center of attention and many believe that “gun ownership is an American tradition older than the country itself and is protected by the Second Amendment” (Metzel and Kenneth). The primary reason for the creation of this amendment was to make certain that every person could legally bear arms, allowing individuals and families to feel safe in their own homes. It is safe to say that homes should be a secure place to lay down at night, and owning a weapon can allow one to have a sense of peace. Therefore, viewing the big picture of gun control can leave one opposing the whole idea. A person knows that they are going to be smart and rational with a firearm, but they need to consider how another person is going to function with that kind of power in their hands. Every person in this world functions differently, and mental illness plays a huge role in the way a person’s brain works. Within the United States since 1970 it is statistically proven that at least 60% of people who committed a mass shooting exhibited symptoms of paranoia, delusions, or depression, before committing
Today I saw a story on the news, about a 22-year old boy in California who went on a murder-spree and killed 6 people before taking his own life. His motive, you ask? Because he was still a virgin. Because he wanted to punish every woman for rejecting him and every sexually-active man for having a better life than he did. But the worst part is that this wasn’t the first time. This wasn’t the first time a person woke up in the morning and decided they were going to take innocent lives because they weren’t happy with their own. 121. That’s the number of attempted mass shootings that haven taken place in the United States this year alone. 475 people murdered and 1 870 injured in 154 days. This is what America’s gun crisis looks like, and this
t home, there are still many challenges, many of which reside in the mindset of Americans and the protections of the Constitution. An example of this is gun control. While American’s have a right to own a gun, does that include military/police grade weapons? Who can have access to guns? Is that a restriction of the 2nd amendment? These are all questions we must ask ourselves today. I believe that In America, while you have the right to bear arms it must be taken in the context of the time it was written. The second amendment reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The founders intended that the 2nd amendment was not for
School safety has become a major issue around the nation. This ongoing debate revolves around the topic of gun violence and mental illness. Mentally ill persons are able to attain guns very easily and use them in dangerous ways that are harmful to other people. What can be done on school safety and gun violence in America to keep our children in a safe environment and protect the rest of the nation? In order to prevent gun deaths and increase school safety, people that are at a high risk of harming themselves or others must be checked out. Also, better background checks and procedures need to be put in place during the short process of buying a gun.
“Colleges and universities occupy a special place in American society. They are much more than a series of buildings and collection of individuals. Instead, they are dynamic living and learning environments where individuals with varying levels of maturity interact, often under stressful circumstances. While recognizing the right of responsible individuals to possess firearms under other circumstances, the unique characteristics of a university campus make the presence of firearms problematic. The shootings that have occurred in recent years at US colleges and universities have generated passionate debate about how best to prevent such violence and whether persons should be allowed to carry concealed guns on campuses. Experts believe there is no credible evidence that students or staff carrying guns would reduce crime. In fact, research has shown that the brains of most college students have not fully developed regarding impulse control and judgment” (Dickerson). Therefore, guns should not be allowed on college campuses because it would lead to an escalation in violent crime, distract from the learning environment, and lead to accidental discharge incidents.
October first, 2017, not even a month ago was the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. This act brought so much fear into people, people became afraid of guns and the ability to use them. The idea of gun control became very popular and commonly talked about once again. People have become convinced that gun control will cause less massacre’s, and they are convinced because of this insane amount of fear people have now. Through past killings or terrorist attacks, people always strongly hate whatever caused the killing through fear alone. After September 11, 2001, a large amount of people hated Muslims, even those inside America which were completely uninvolved, fear can takeover one’s mind quick. These “modernized monsters” are
