Personal Statement: Why I Choose Nursing

I have chosen to become a Registered Nurse because, I like to be challenged, I want situations to be difficult so I can use my skills and knowledge to solve them to the best of my ability. I have the drive and determination to become a nurse and care for others in different situations every day. I want to make a difference in people’s life, and I know being a nurse will help me fulfill this want.

A day in the life as a CNA (Certified Nurse Aide) can have its ups and its downs. As a CNA you can work in a couple different areas of the nursing field, you have options of where you want to be and you are not finite to any certain place. Most CNA’s start out working in a nursing home then exude to other places such as hospitals. As a nurse aide you have many options of being in a certain field of nursing. That is what I love about nursing; it is versatile and you can work wherever you want in the country. You can travel and see places you haven’t seen while doing what you love to do as a career.

I chose nursing as my profession because I always have had a desire to serve and educate others and nursing, which has given me an opportunity to do that. Nursing is a rewarding career that gives the greatest opportunity to save lives, comfort, and care for them. The nursing profession tends to run in my family and have inspired me to become a nurse as well. This profession is the most demanding and helpful profession in the world.

I choose nursing as my future career because I enjoy working with others, helping others feel better, and educating people. These three topics are all involved in what nursing is. I believe that nursing is focused on the holistic care of individuals and their families in order to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health, a great quality of life, and comfort. This is done through the promoting healthy living, providing a safe environment, preventing illness, and the caring for the individual and the family.

I cannot attribute my desire of becoming a nurse to following the footsteps of a family member, nor caring for a sick family member as I was growing up. I am a first generation high school student, furthermore, a college graduate. I became a mother at the very young age of sixteen. Being so young and growing up without the care of my parents, it was always said I, too, would end up in a rough situation and not be able to care for my child being so young myself. I continued out my days and nights being a high school teen mom. I graduated from high school in three years by attending night school while I was pregnant; allowing me to finish school sooner and obtain a better job that would allow me to take care of my son.

The institution that I have decided to attend is the University of Central Florida. The main reason why I chose this school was because it will help me save money and I won’t need to travel anywhere to get my degree. Another big reason as to why I chose this school is because they have many great programs that will help me be better prepared when I begin my career such as their Modeling, Stimulation, and Training Epicenter which is used to prepare nursing students with different types of scenarios that they might face while working and also helps them work hands on rather than watching someone else do the job. UCF was also a good choice because their Medical Mission trips could help me and other nursing students travel to other places in the

As a first-generation Mexican American, I am a product of two cultures melded into one. Since my parents were raised in Mexico they never finish their education and had to work at a young age to support their family. Growing up, my parents would share stories of their childhood that contrast the life in the United States to Mexico. So, when they were given the opportunity to move to the United States, they took that as a sign to bring a better life for them and their family. Understanding the obstacles my parents had to overcome to raise me in a better environment motivated to pursue an education. I’ve known since I was a teenager that the educational path and career choice I want to pursue is nursing. As a nurse, my goal is to contribute to society and sharing my competence, commitment, and compassion to others whether is my coworkers or patients.

I knew I could be a nurse when I watched blood ooze from my brother’s face. His eyes dripping tears, and body shaking from being scared, he did not know what to do. I however, did not flinch once when I wiped the blood off his small face and hands. He was just two and I remember thinking how I had to fix him. I had to make sure his nose, his forehead, and the of side of his face was okay. I did not think twice about touching blood, or how his whole nose was black and blue. In that moment I was selfless. I chose nursing because I am capable of putting others before me. I am selfless enough to understand what it means to be a nurse, and have to be a mother, a daughter, and a whole family in a patient’s time of need. There is an endless amount of possibilities an individual can go with a career in nursing. Nursing has plenty of specialties to choose from and nursing work is widely available throughout the world. It is personally rewarding and emotional to have an interactive relationship with the patients. This career allows nurses to get on a more personal level with the patients and provide comfort and bed care. Most importantly we can make a difference in patient's lives by bringing hope. Nurses are guardian angels when the patients are sick or seriously ill. They are the ones that spend a lot of time with patients and build long lasting relationships. Ever since I was a child I have always loved taking care of infants. I have an extremely large family so there was always babies to tend to. My grandmother babysat all of my cousins and my, since I was one of the oldest grandchildren I became another set of hands to help with all the children. I changed my first diaper when I was 6 years old, and I still remember my grandmother watching over me as I secured the wings of the diaper down. I have always known I wanted to have a career in the medical field, but it wasn't until a few years ago when it finally clicked and I realized the neonatal intensive care unit was the place I wanted to be.

I majored in nursing because when I visit my step grandfather in the nursing home where he lives, I feel like I belong there. I feel like I should be there helping them because helping other people makes me happy.

I chose nursing as my major for three reasons that are important to me. I have always been interested in the medical field, my own medical history plays a factor in my choice, and I love children.

In fact, there are several reasons why I chose nursing as my profession. First and foremost is that I want to focus on changing people’s lives (Nurse Journal, 2016). As a nurse, I would study the life's value when I would be seeing individuals struggling to remain alive. Since I am fully aware that each life's breadth is a gift, I would, therefore, understand this lesson further as I would be nursing various patients daily. I greatly respect human life, I possess strong values and I am compassionate for empathy and suffering, factors that have further attracted me to the nursing profession. Second, nursing profession allows continuous learning. As I like learning, I would possess unlimited opportunities for advancing my medical knowledge. As such, I would capable of choosing to work in various departments, train to become a medical assistant and as well enter the nursing management where I would grow and mentor new nurses through sharing my knowledge

I chose this major because I like to help people. I chose nursing because I want to save lives. I’m interested in nursing also because of my mom. My mom has a lot of health conditions include diabetes, fibromyalgia, asthma, and gastritis. I help my mom on daily basis with her conditions. I love helping my mom. To me, being a nurse is far more than a job or even a career. It's an adventure, a continuous learning process that I embark on bravely each day, in search of life changing events and miracles. I consider myself to be a compassionate person who genuinely enjoys helping people, to positively impact people's lives by making a significant difference while achieving a lifelong dream, because of its endless variety and finally, I believe this is the best career path for me.

I chose to be a nurse because this allows me to interact more with people. Nursing is a great profession; it allows people to influence and touch lives. I am willing to obtain this significant responsibility. I am keen to be there for the patients through illness, injury pain, loss, grieving, birth, growth, aging, and health. I consider myself as determined and vigorous. I have the desire and determination to accomplish my goal of being a nurse. I am also thoughtful, caring, and open. I believe that my desire and traits would reflect on me being a nurse and would make me successful one.
