Music is a powerful force. Music strongly affects our emotions, brings back memories, changes the way we express ourselves, and it can even affect our health. Music shapes our personality in ways we do not notice. The following three song’s show how my life has changed and how songs can be used to retell one’s own past through someone else’s lyrics.
Firstly, I chose the song “Don’t you worry child” by Swedish house mafia because
It's about people going through tough times in their life... It's a song meant to empower you to keep pushing forward, living in the world around you, rather than “in the pictures on the wall” (the past). Many parts of the song’s lyrics I use to compare to my own life. I used to live in a "happy home" when I was a younger, When I was 12-years-old, my parents separated and those days of being in a "happy home" were gone for me; and I still think about it from time to time, just like in the lyrics “"Those days are gone, and now the memories are on the wall"” and the words "my first heartbreak" when my parents separated. Moving to Ohio everything changed for me; I changed schools, changed houses, and got new friends. It was difficult dealing with the new environment, However, friends and family would always tell me “Don’t be anxious about what you can not change, do what you can and do not worry about the

The first part of the song that says "Go ahead as you waste your days with thinking, when you fall, everyone stands" describes a person who just keeps thinking negatively and doesn't know what to do. I can compare this part of the song to when I first came to Ohio, I only thought negatively about not being able to go back home and didn't let go of what had happened in my past. The song explains that when you have lost hope and “all you got to keep is strong” that you should (As the name of the song states) “Move
With such tension in these lyrics the song goes from giving the audience melancholy feelings, to leaving them with a sense of hope. In this lyric Underwood reminds us that though people may be gone, (like the victims of the attack on the Twin Towers and Sandy Hook shooting), today’s society must carry their memories throughout life.
He mentions the fight in the House of Representatives that broke out, in relation with the civil rights bill. He also about the equality between black and white people in the 1960’s. At this point this is being read the words “all is calm, all is bright” this completely contrast from the subject about racism but the song is representing a sense of tranquillity as if everything is okay when it is not.
The symbolism in this song is that life is hard for other members of the society. This song regards a man trying/ resolving to alter his ways before starting to change the world. This
Popular singer Elton John once said; “music has healing power; it has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours”, and for most, music is the portal to an out of body experience. African American lyricists especially have been found to use the art of music to escape the real world, commencing from the slavery era and onward. The blues song titled The Tracks of My Tears does just that; expresses the ability to remove your soul from a treacherous reality. Similarly, the lyrics from popular modern songs, written by black artists, speak volumes about what is presently going on in the country, parallel to the way African American slavery songs did. Music written at an earlier period have been found to correlate to music of the past through providing strong emotion toward present day commentary.
This theme is brought through the song by showing multiple literary devices. Such as “I'm the one at sail, I’m the master of my sea”. This metaphor shows the realization and empowerment that oneself can give in a depressing situation. This simile “Falling like ashes to the ground, Hoping my feelings they would drown” compares his feeling of sadness and depression to ashes, and wanting them to drown and vanish, from his life. This line, “All the hate that you’ve heard has turned your spirit to a dove” explains how all of the hate that he has experienced and gone through has turned his feelings around, and decided to look on the bright side of things. Personally I think this is a great
The impact that music has on individuals lives varies greatly from person to person and often provides a unique lifestyle to each individual. An author by the name Oliver Sacks talks about the unique cases that he has dealt with in the past in his writings. The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat and “Brainworms, Sticky Music, and Catchy Tunes” from Musicophilia are two articles written by Oliver Sacks, which show the relationship that music has on the mind and how music can change how a person perceives reality. The human mind is a complex machine and yet there is something about music that transforms a person’s thought process completely.
The early 1960s were a time of change and unrest. It was a time period where the “New Americans,” aka the young generation, were making changes in society. There was this domestic ideal that women were supposed to be at home cleaning, cooking, and taking care of children while the men would work. But during the 1960s, more women were finding jobs and eventually forty percent of workers were women. Marriage rates were declining and divorces were increasing because women were choosing to not be married.
Brad states “in general, the song is about all farmers, who despite facing hard times throughout their life,
I participate in marching and concert band. As for concert band I have participated in it for 3 years, and i have only been in marching band for half a year.I enjoy being in both ensembles because it gives me a chance to make beautiful music and connect with my fellow band members. Most of the reason I’m even at where I am is because of my bad instructor Mr.Barz.
This song represents the feeling of emptiness throughout life. Through all of Kurt Cobain's life, it was mostly empty. People are searching for the theme, and that can be found in the lyrics, “With the lights out, it's less dangerous, / Here we are now; entertain us, / I feel stupid and contagious” (Nirvana). It is said that these lyrics show the security and satisfaction after shooting up with heroin. The idea of drugs and sex is messed up but nothing can entertain a group of young teens. People are trying to introduce this idea of heroin as an idea that is better than sex, which is almost all that someone can say after shooting up too many times. Charlie soon finds the lifestyle inside highschool of drug parties, drama, and nighttime adventures. Charlie is dipped into the 90s music era and this helps cope with problems that may occur later throughout the
Throughout its history, music has permeated the significant events of American history. Its effect on American society and the way the American people cope with each event has only grown as popular music evolves and new genres reach more and more individuals. People can remember where they were and their exact surroundings to amazing detail when asked about life-changing events in history. Older generations will remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Their children will remember when Kennedy was assassinated and when man walked on the moon. Their grandchildren will remember much of the turmoil of the ‘70s and ‘80s and their great grandchildren grew up in the world impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. Even one’s surroundings during the start or end of a relationship or personal events such as graduation, getting a driver’s license, or getting married can all be paired with the music that was popular at the time.
These specific lyrics explain how even though you’re handed one thing, it doesn’t always mean it will happen. Not only that but also, how you can learn to fight when new opportunities present themselves. “Love and the loyalty that's what we stand for, Alienated by society, all this pressure give me anxiety, Walk slow through the fire, Like, who gon' try us?, Feeling the world go against us, So we put the world on our shoulders”. Now, what these lyrics portray are the journeys the 3 are in the mitts of while seeking a new fate that is currently unknown. Under the circumstances, because of how their society is formed, they feel as if their families abandoned them or let them down, because it’s law, that they are now forced to ultimately trust each other with how the fates have all been crossed for them. Therefore, it’s up to them too, “put the world on our shoulders”, and try and figure out what’s next for them individually and together. Along with, how they will survive and get along with each other. Lev, Connor, and Risa have to make difficult decisions in order to know what the world will bring in their
The first verse of the song shares the troubled relationship between the father and son, when it said, “he came to the world in the usual way, but there were planes to catch and bills to pay. He learned to walk while I was away.” This verse explained that he was away on some type of career to make money for the family, and provide for the son financially. However, he wasn’t able to spend quality time with him, and missed important milestones in his life, such as taking his first steps. His career obviously came before his son and family, and he made excuses for that. Then it finishes with the chorus, which says, “when you
“I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” This famous quote said by Billy Joel does a good job describing the way music can affect people. Different songs can impact people, change their moods, or bring back memories related to a certain tune. Each person, however, has their own unique taste in music; one song can be loved by one but hated by another, it all depends on our personal taste and what we can relate to. This made me wonder, what does the music I listen to say about myself? Do the lyrics define who I am as a person, or do I simply like songs because of the beat? As I looked at my top ten playlist,
It is a sin for anyone to destroy, in a blink of an eye, what they have been working on for months or even years. Therefore, one should always face the hardships with a strong will, hold their head up high when facing an upcoming storm, because that is the only way they can survive the war that is life. Right towards the end of the song, there is an extremely empowering line that says “this road never looked so lonely, this house doesn’t burn down slowly to ashes” which stands as a reminder that right when the challenge becomes harder, one should never forget what they are fighting for and simply give up. The amount of determination reflected in this line is the reason why I listen to this song whenever I feel defeated by the obstacles. It comes to spark the flame of determination in my heart when I consider backing
