My guiding question was formed from my personal experience and passion regarding sports. Throughout my youth years leading into my senior year of high school, I have played the sports of football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and wrestling as well. I had gone through countless failures, successes, and experiences that have altered my character and identity, contributing to the person I am today. Failures notably consist of playing poorly during a game, leading to letting my teammates down or failing to win a wrestling match. Successes notably included winning football games, making a great play or and winning a wrestling tournament. With those successes and failures, came with experiences that shaped me to become resilient and wiser in life. Coaches and teammates that I have played with and for, have taught and guided me to become a better athlete and student than I was before. I was very fortunate in my life to be named the captain of my wrestling and football teams, and a coach/mentor for my town's youth football and wrestling programs as well. My perspective is vast, from actually playing in countless games on the court, field, to looking from the outside as a coach or part of the crowd. Upon high school graduation, my tenure of playing sports came to an end, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on my character in the past, to the present. At this point in my life, I can fully understand how sports have positively influenced me through all aspects of my life.

On February 28, 2005, I experienced one of the most exciting events that anyone could ever experience – winning a State Championship. The day my soccer team made history is a day I’ll never forget. However it is not just that day we won the title, but the whole experience of the preceding season that got us there. From start to finish, my team’s 2004-2005 season taught me that the platitude is true. You can do anything you set your mind to.
I believe in sports. I believe that it is capable of changing the world. Sports are a part of our culture that all started with the ancient Greeks. I think sports is a way to unite people as it has throughout the years. Sports can bring people all across the country together. It brings countries together to compete in games and events instead of fighting each other. Sports can not only bring strangers together, but also bring family together. For example, a son can bond with his father through sports. When you play a sport and you lose, your true character shows. Some people are sore losers and jerks after they lose. Then there are some people that congratulate the other team, even though they are upset. I however am a little bit of both. When I play sports, most of the time I show sportsmanship and
I believe that I am a product of the environment that I have been raised in. The world that I live in has allowed me to become much more than a unique DNA sequence. I have been fortunate enough to have been blessed with a privileged life. My parents are happily married, have steady and well paying jobs, and love my sister and me immensely. Growing up, I never had to worry about money, whether that be for new clothes or to go on a trip with my church, or if we were going to be able to have a decent meal. I am truly blessed for that and I hope one day I will be able to provide for my future kids in the same way, and I feel the best way to achieve that is through a higher education. The one thing that has been always expected of me is to get
Football is a game of passion, a time when nothing else matters and the only thing that matters is going out there having fun and fighting for the guy next to you. Football has always been something that I loved and had a wild passion for. I’ve made friendships and memories to last a life time and I can always be grateful that football did that for me. Now of course I’ve had some bad memories during football as well, I remember walking out of the film room on the last day of spring ball and having Coach Antle grab me and say “Gage, I think I want to try you at a new position, I want to put you at defensive end. We need you more there and we think you can really excel there.” I remember being so furious, I had played linebacker ever since I could remember and now the last day of spring ball my senior year everything was about to change.
Some people think cheer is not a sport, to me it is my life. There is school cheer and competitive cheer, some prefer one over the other or they do both. School cheer is the yippie, go, go, go sideline chants. Competitive cheer is when a team of five or more create a two and half minute routine and compete against other teams on the same level. Both sports take huge dedication to the coaches and teammates.
What is the only thing harder than disciplining a dozen ten year olds? Disciplining them on ice! All throughout my life I’ve played sports, and no matter what sport it was, there was always one person who seemed to have it out for me…the referee. The referee is one of the most hated people in the world of sports, but is also one of the most crucial. I grew up with the mindset that the referee was the enemy. Whenever they made a call against me or my team, they were always wrong, no matter how obvious the penalty was. But one day, my whole perspective on referees changed---the day I became a referee.
Coaches always talk about how, “Sports do not make character, they reveal it”. By knowing this I know that the way I overcome difficulties on the field, shows how I will deal with the ups and downs in life. Sports also improve team building skills, communication skills, dedication, hard work, consistency, etc. I find if I improve on those I will be a better person on and off the field.
One of the people in the educational system I find useful are coaches. Coaches always talk about how, “Sports do not make character, they reveal it”. By knowing this I know that the way I overcome difficulties on the field, shows how I will deal with the ups and downs in life. Sports also improve team building skills, communication skills, dedication, hard work, consistency, etc. I find if I improve on those I will be a better person on and off the
I have been playing baseball since I was 7 years old and I have experienced various coaching styles throughout the years. My experience with the Wheatland Athletics Association playing on the Ducks Baseball Travel Team has been a positive experience. The coaches create a healthy environment of support in developing and tweaking a player’s skills with organized and structured practices, as well as, the opportunity to use the batting cages on our own time. The instruction and guidance given during games help motivate to keep a positive attitude when the team is a bit off and not performing to the best of our abilities. On the other, the coaches keep the team level-headed and humble when the momentum is going our way as the lead can disappear as fast as it came. Along with helping prepare an athlete physically, they also encourage a strong mindset. The coaches emphasize the importance of perseverance and endurance in keeping focused when the going gets tough and most importantly, to never give up. They also enforce the importance of school and finding the balance between athletics and schoolwork. This foster a strong work ethic both on and off the field. In addition, finding the balance between athletics and academics is crucial, as they are both
What is an obsession? An obsession is something a person is totally fixated on and also very much devoted to. When I think of the word obsession, I also think of the word passion. Everybody has a passion for something and in my world, my passion is soccer. Soccer has been my obsession since I was very little and is important to me in many different aspects, such as teaching me lessons and skills that I can use in life. I think soccer is the best mainly because of the physical activity and the way it has affected my family and my hometown as well. Soccer is a huge part of my life and I hope to keep it that way for a long time.
Being involved in high school athletics has had a huge impact on my life. It has not only taught me the meaning of hard work and persistence but giving me the opportunity to build confidence on and off the court. When i was younger i would tend to keep to myself, always sitting through class hoping to never be called on because if I were to be called on, there would always be a chance to do or say something wrong. It wasn't until later, when I came to the conclusion that I feared failure, and at that time I would rather stay quiet and give in to that fear rather than face it. It was ultimately through sports that I came to the conclusion that you can't always do everything perfectly, and in the end all I could do was take the little control
I never liked playing with dolls, painting nails, pretending I was a teacher or even acting like I was baking with fake food. All that girly stuff sounded boring to me, so the one thing that kept me busy everyday was going outside and playing whatever sport was on for that day with all my neighborhood friends. We played everything from kickball to football in the streets. Ever since I was a little child, playing sports was my passion. In my free time I played every sport you can think of, but sports that I actually was on a team for was baseball, hockey, soccer, and I ran track. Being an athlete is how people knew me, I guess you could say I was and still am a tomboy. Being involved in a sport ever since I was four years old, has really taught me a lot about not just playing the sports itself, but at life as a whole. Being apart of a team, can teach someone many skills, and life lessons. Because there are uncountable reasons why one should be involved in a sport, the main skills, and lessons include learning how to work together, and developing communication, and organizing skills. Additionally, one could develop a good work ethic, and learn how to control body language/temper.
The sight and sound of watching the basketball swish through the net are second to none. For this reason and much more, I have fallen in love with the game of basketball and all the sport has to offer. From an extremely young age until now I have played the game and I hope to be either playing or involved with the game as long as I live. I have tried many other sports including soccer, football, and lacrosse but none can compare to the pleasure and passion that I have for basketball. This has become more than a sport for me, it has become a passion and something that I have dedicated my time, energy and hard work into.
Being in an American school begins a student’s search to find who they are considered in the system. From a nerd to a punk, many academic ties are also involved with this identity. The one group of students who get the most academic ties with his or her extra-curricular activity is the “jock”. As having the title as a jock, a child learns that many people look at someone who plays football or basketball doesn’t have the ability to learn as fast or as well as someone who just studies and doesn’t have extra-curricular activities. Studying this topic is not as stressed as it should be, even when many programs claim to get more physical activity in students. The articles that have been reviewed were testing whether the athlete gets good grades
Sports and religion are things that can go together in many ways. Sports were founded on religion and were kept strong by religion. Now sport is taking over as religion almost in today's world. Sports can promote things that are not necessarily right according to God but we participate anyway. While how the mind and body are connected give another way of how sport is. Finally, we see that sports in a modern context have changed greatly and are ritual heavy one would almost say idolic. Religion and sports are both here to stay and they really are a way something that can unite everyone.
