My Hispanic identity and heritage is an important part of my identity because it has shaped my journey as student and guided me in discovering my passion in life. I strongly believe being the daughter of immigrant parents has pushed me to work harder as a student and has motivated me to search for ways to help my Hispanic community. Since my parents and the majority of my family are immigrants from Mexico, this unique position has exposed me to the reality of thousands of people who come to the country looking for the American Dream, but also the difficult obstacles they face in their daily lives. My first step in my journey to bring justice in my community was joining Teen Court. This organization gave me the basic tools to learn about the court system and gave me the courage to start speaking up. I knew if I wanted to be the voice of my community, I first needed to find my own voice. The next important skill I believe is crucial is having the proficiency to be fluent in both Spanish and English. I knew my ability to speak English was better than Spanish, so I decided to pursue a certification to be a Spanish translator at my community college. My goal when I graduate this year is to be able to write and read in Spanish just as good as I can in English. The classes that I am taking and the skills I am developing for my certification will prepare me to communicate with the correct terminology and gain confidence on my ability to speak Spanish. Both of these steps that I have taken assure me law and government is a career I want to pursue since my determination to help the Hispanic community still
