Auburn University has many traditions that go way back. The history behind these tradi-tions is what makes Auburn such a great atmosphere. Most of the traditions do involve football, but some have their own meaning and were started randomly a long time ago. Before every home football game, an eagle flies from the middle of the field, all the way around the football stadium, and back to the middle of the field. This is known as Eagle Flight and is meant to be a signal to all of the fans that the football game is within minutes of starting. This tradition has been around for almost 100 years. The most famous eagle was Tiger, who was the 6th eagle to fly around the stadium. Tiger flew from 1986-2006, and in her last game there was a moment of si-lence for her. Now an eagle named Spirit flies around before games and is very popular among fans because of her bright white head and tail feathers, which is different than most bald eagles. Another tradition is the wrapping of Toomer’s Corner with toilet paper, called Rolling Toomer’s. This is the most famous tradition in all of college football. After every game that Auburn football wins, students meet up at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and College Street. This became popular in 1972 after Auburn beat Alabama in a close, 17-16, game. The reason toilet paper is used is because an Auburn running back said before the big Alabama game “we’re gonna beat the No. 2 out of

"Forget the stories of magic leprechauns in the rafters of Boston Garden and how the cramped visitors' dressing room and psychological games created some sort of Celtics' mystique," Oscar Robertson observed. "No matter how good the players surrounding him were, no matter how competitive his coach was, Bill Russell was the Celtics' mystique." Needless to say, Russell's legacy is as grand as they come. From the beginning of his playing days through the decades that have passed since he has made an indelible impact on everything he has touched. For 13 years, it was the Celtics organization, and that is why he is regarded as the greatest champion of all time. For all that he accomplished on and off the field, Bill Russell is definitely one of the all-time great players of

Have you thought about the name or mascot of your favorite sports team like the Chicago Blackhawks, the Washington Redskins, or even a college team like Florida State Seminoles? These teams and more have been accused of being racist towards Native Americans and their culture. However, many teams do not intentionally use their mascots to discriminate against Natives. Instead, they represent Native American Tribes and use names to respect the history of the tribal nation. Others would say that sports teams are just using those native titles to gain more fans. Also, natives would argue that professional sports teams are making fun of their tribes because of the decisions that the team has made about the way that the native cultures are portrayed. People would say that teams with native mascots have lack of respect towards Native Americans. However, many professional sports teams that are named after a native tribe are respectful towards the native heritage in ways such as having a partnership with the tribe, honoring a leader that the team was named after, and even helping out a tribe.
Once joining the Irish family, undergraduates take part in many events to uphold the traditions set forth by graduates from classes before. Bleacherreport.com highlighted a prime point, “there is tradition in the structures and the people that make up this University. Father Sorin, Father Corby, Knute Rockne, Father Hesburgh, Ara Parseghian, these are all people who have had a hand in shaping the tradition of Notre Dame,” (Doc. C). The customs established by these religious leaders can still be seen today, especially when looking at the Fighting Irish football team. The community and fanbase surrounding the sport is impeccable. Similar to the New York Yankees’ well known name in the Major League Baseball network, Notre Dame football is a household name nationwide that people either tune in to either cheer on to victory or pray for to lose (Doc. C). In addition to the liveliness and extensiveness of their fanbase, the university’s football program has produced several National Football League star players and
His acceptance speech has gone down as one of the most eloquent and moving speeches of all time, especially in light of his ultimate fate. He said, “If you’ll permit me, I’d like to make a comment which, in my mind, is indicative perhaps of the greater significance of football and sports emphasis in general in this country. And that is I thank God I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest and not on the battlefields of Europe. I can speak confidently and positively that the players of this country would much more, much rather struggle and fight to win the Heisman award than the Croix de Guerre” (Lidd). After his speech, a columnist from The Boston Globe wrote, “The country is OK as long as it produces Nile Kinnicks. The football part is incidental”
The Rams reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year, one of eight schools in the country with a streak of that length.

However, this fact has changed drastically in recent years. In fact, these mascots are essentially making their team lose money. According to an Emory University sports-marketing study, MLB teams using Native American mascots cost themselves about $2.6 million per year, and NFL teams $1.6 million per year in revenue by continuing to use the condemned mascots. Despite successful seasons in 2010 and 2013 for Kansas City and in 2012 for Washington, the Chiefs and Redskins have suffered two of the NFL’s harshest brand falloffs over the last
“The Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies at California State University in San Bernardino surveyed 400 individuals, 98 of them Native Americans, and found that 67 percent of Native Americans agreed the "Redskins team name is a racial or racist word and symbol."” (Steele). Some mascots are offensive and racist to certain cultures and races. In, 2005, the NCAA banned schools with Native American mascots from hosting a national championship game (ProQuest Staff). Before this topic, I have no experience with the "Indian Mascot". After reading some of articles, I am very impressive by the argument in the article which is "Redskins, Sambos, and Whities - Racism in Sports Mascots." I am not a big fan of any sports, so I have ever not known about the meaning of a sport team's mascot. Now, I am opened my mind. I realize that after every mascot, it has a different meaning. Some are good, but some may hurt people's feeling. Some people said that they think the Indian American and supporters are too sensitive when they care much of a mascot. However, we can not understand someone if we do not stand on their position. The Indian Americans have a indigenous culture with a lot of things we have not known. The stereotypes
