Receiving an education via an online course is one that has begun with many challenges. I have come from having no knowledge of researching information to feel like I have journeyed a long way finding the confidence to research pertinent and quality resources. Through this particular unit I have been given the implements to develop a sound knowledge of online group collaborations and the programs to allow the communication to take place.
Learning about how to obtain credible resources has been invaluable to my advancement so far. Using Metzger's criteria has helped me to detect information that is accurate, current, objective, credible and comprehensive (Swinburne Online, 2016). I have since realised learning in the digital world is more challenging than it appears with feelings of isolation playing a vast role in my study to begin with. I found, during this time that I needed to participate in as much collaboration as possible and to converse with the class and my group to facilitate myself to learn as much as conceivable with also feeling connected to the class. Constructivist theorists believe a child learns best using collaboration with peers to build on their current knowledge. Vygotsky called this the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD) and he came to this view by observing children who were tested on tasks individually compared to children who were tested on tasks in a collaborative way, he found that the progression of engagement helped to refine the thinking and make the learning more effective (Atherton, n.d.). I believe the same can be said for adults as well, especially after going from one online university where no group tasks were initiated to studying here were grouped collaboration was encouraged
This essay will discuss how my use of online information has grown from being merely a consumer, to now being able to critically evaluate online sources for credibility and suitability for use in academic work. My role in producing an online informational resource has been enhanced by both the readings, and the experience gained in the collaborative process involved in working as a team. This is my first experience at online collaboration and I will examine the challenges encountered using this medium of communication, how I dealt with them, the lessons learned, and what I would do differently during future collaborative work.
Although taking online courses may appear to be very time consuming and hard at times, the idea of obtaining your college degree from the convenience of your own home has made it easy for students to continue on with their everyday life. I agree with Weaver et al. (2010) that the introduction of Wiki has opened up a new experience for off campus students studying online. I found that using the Wiki this semester provided me with the opportunity to strengthen my overall communication and leadership skill’s. Working collaboratively online suited my lifestyle by not having to stick to strict deadlines and allowing me to contribute to the assignment in my own time. Completing an online presentation using Prezi and Wiki allowed my ELA to see how much each individual contributed, which I felt encouraged other team members to contribute equally as a majority of it was assessed according to the individual’s contributions. In order to utilize this advantage I made sure that my contributions were noted on the Wiki to demonstrate that I was fully involved and committed to my group and this ensured that my hard work did not go unrecognised. Since I have started my course with Swinburne I have found the blackboard discussions to be extremely helpful and beneficial from social constructivism by feeding off one another’s ideas. In my past English classes, I have worked on citing properly, creating cohesive text, and using databases. Hopefully these skills will follow through into this new journey. I was becoming stressed as the time was getting closer and closer to midnight. I knew that I had to get this assignment done before I procrastinate any longer. I may have a small problem with procrastination, however, I had tried not to for this assignment. This is my first online college class and I wasn't sure what to expect as I am only a Sophmore in high school. Even though it is a practice assignment about plagiarism, I still wanted to do my best. The student that I’ll be talking about is named Nia; she is a strong-willed learner who scored a S33,P32,TR22,C22. Nia is a online student that doesn’t have any family support. She is in no position to not ask for help! My first suggestion is to swallow her pride and take advantage of the support the school provides. Due to her being against accepting help, I would definitely stress that she should not skim through directions, in which she finds unclear. Nia needs to practice critical reading to become more of a successful college student! Another suggestion is she needs to take the teacher’s advice to proofread before posting. I always read what I wrote out loud because that’s the best way to catch things that don't sound right! Nia does not
